The best way to learn how to play jazz is to learn songs and play them with people. But choosing new songs can be overwhelming for musicians who are just starting to build their repertoire. There are so many tunes, and some of them seem to have so many chords - how do you know which ones will work for you? That’s why I’ve put together this list of jazz standards that are easier than you think.
These are songs that have a lot of chords and might look intimidating, but actually can be improvised over using 1 or 2 scales. I not going to include blues or rhythm changes here, nor will you find the other typical easy jazz tunes like “So What” or “Cantaloupe Island” - I assume you already know about those tunes. I want give you some different options.
The added advantage to learning these songs is twofold: number one, they are somewhat less common standards, which will add a nice variety to your repertoire.
Number two, each of these tunes has many more levels of harmony besides the simplified version I will show you.
So as you become more knowledgeable with your own playing, you’ll be able to constantly revisit these tunes and play them with more detail.
I hope you find this video helpful!
