After watching an RKL video online, I went online and bought the cheapest bass I could find! As it turned out it's a pretty damn good little bass. I was used to playing a hammer than Ibanez I even had a rick at one time all were sold for family funds. UPDATE: The Bass I bought turned out to be a piece of junk. Even though the company (Glarry) is willing to work with me, you can't uncut wood! And the pickup collapsed into the plastic body! You get what you pay for!?!!

First time i heard under pressure (queen) i ask my brother what is the instrument in the intro. He said its a bass guitar. And i never heard that kind of sound until i heard Journey to The East Bay and Hyena intro 😂 and pick bass guitar to learn after that

Everyone in that band is fucking amazing. Drummer might be the best at his craft, though, other than Tomas’s songwriting skills. It took me a while to notice how good Chris Thatcher’s sense of rhythm is.

Get a Stingray. It took me 20+ years to realize this, that fat humbucker sounds like no other. They're expensive as hell, but even the cheaper Sterlings have the sound. Found mine ($800 5 string Sterling) on craigslist for $280. If you love that sound, it's worth looking for. PS I don't work for Music Man, I just share your love of that tone.

@@haolekoa737 I wish I could afford equipment like I squandered years ago. Plus I'm way out of playing shape (I remember being better than I am now). I don't do well with a 5 string. I want my Hamer back (20 years gone). Or my Ibanez ,that I sold after my accident so I could have a place to live. So I went on line and bought the cheapest bass I could find! (Pawn shop was a washout) The cut for the neck bridge mis-cut. Won't stay in tune. Play soft and Carry a thin pick,lol. No slapping on it either. Soooo I'm saving my money again. Sometimes sh*t happens for a reason. I'll get there, it's a hobby now no serious band or un serious either! Lol! But those HUMBUCKER P/U's make a Huge diff I bet!??

@@CZECHMATE650 Got mine second hand for under $300, they're out there if you look. It was only the second bass I bought in over 20 years of playing, and it was worth it. 4 strings or 5, it doesn't really matter. Play what feels right to you.

And, no matter how much you enjoy it, you probably won't make any money listening to it. So enjoy it for what it is and fuck all the bullshit :)

They and NOFX are the most collectively skilled bands in the punk scene by a mile. They have real technique and approach. It adds so much dimension.

Everyone will say Ramones as it’s Dee Dee and he’s cool and Sid copied his style but judged on bass playing alone I would prefer Matt Freeman.. Others’ I like Klaus Flouride, Joe Lally and here is one most will have to research Paul Slack, highly underrated.

Ironically, Dee Dee was the main songwriter for the Ramones, and had to dumb down his playing because Johnny refused to play anything other than power chords.

I agree on Sid not being mentioned, he really couldn't play. Glen Matlock was (and is) a very good bass player even though all the bass parts on "Never Mind The Bollocks" were played by Steve Jones (there was a "buried" bass part on "Bodies" that Sid did, I think that was just to say he was on the album.

I've never felt the need to do it back when I played in bands. It sounds pretty crappy and is totally unnecessary, imo. The palm muting that is.

that root note chord progression kinda reminds me of a solo part from "A Line in the Sand".. Nice one but I want this music Man bass like this but similar to Dave Farrell. Nice job making a song as a Backing Track for guitar! Gotta jam this and practice to use to cover soon with an collaboration.

Couple of things: Hitting the notes really hard with your left hand helps you get that crunchy tone. Boost the mids with your EQ. A lot of time that crunchy tone is also supplemented with gain and overdrive, although I'd say to not overdo it with those.

If you are talking about Chris Barker, He uses a Sans-Amp Bass Driver DI by Tech 21 its a "pedal" (sort of). Go to EquipBoard.com and search his name. It'll show you most of the gear he has used, or just about any artists. The gear is confirmed by the artists themselves from interviews where they talked about what gear they used (both written and video interviews) or photographic evidence of them playing said gear.

Just found your vids after stumbling across your awesome Mike Dirnt vids, such an awesome tone. Great to hear how versatile a SterlingRay34 / Stingray can be and cut through as much as a PBass in punk rock. I’ve got the exact same Ray34 in Stealth Black but struggle to get a decent punk tone, how have you set up your EQ? Love the sound that you are getting!
