I think this was very useful to see the different effects with these alternative materials used Sam. Having lovely folders is a big plus when embosding. These new 10 are lovely. The only thing I've tried thats different from these, is using cloth which has been spread with watered down mod poge and allowed to dry out. Then emboss. Spray with water if its brittle. (Too much glue used) It gives an interesting background.😊 x

Thicker vellum seems to work better. You can also try putting a thinner piece of vellum between two pieces of copy/printer paper to see if that will keep it from cracking; I've had some luck doing this.

I cut up aluminium drink cans with sturdy scissors to remove top and bottoms. (Wash them out first) Then you flatten out the can body and emboss like a bought metal sheet. Careful not to cut fingers though. Very cheap and recycling at the same time. For aluminium foil quadruple the thickness for a great result :)

I have cut up boxes that held crackers, ones that the inside has a craft paper look. They are thick but not too thick and emboss extremely well. I’ve used coffee bean bags cut, using the silver side, and it’s beautiful. Yes, alcohol inks and sharpies work well on the “metal” surfaces. I’ve also put ribbon on card stock, in stripes, then embossed and that worked well too. There are many things we all have that will work perfectly. Good information. Thanks so much!

If you're into mixed media, art on canvas, etc. here's another idea for the metal (1st item you used). Cut the metal into strips, each one long enough to cover the sides of a canvas. Add texture to the metal using an embossing folder, pounding it with handles of scissors, etc. Rub the "textured" metal strips with StazOn (has to be an alcohol based ink) and tack them around the edges of your canvas. Years ago I took a class to learn how to transfer an ink jet copy (photo) onto canvas. After the photo was transferred and the canvas was "decorated" (stencils, paste, paint, stamping, etc), we finished the project by tacking the metal strips around the canvas. I'm thinking that "fabric paper" would look pretty cool around the canvas as well! Thanks for demonstrating all those different materials. Fun!!! I wonder if you could put that gold paper (the one that cracked) between damp layers of paper towels to stop the "paper" itself from cracking? Just a thought!

All of the materials showed great promise. I recently found some heavier-duty, kind of handmade paper feel, wallpaper and thought I'd give it a try. It was a very lightly mottled ivory coloredb paper. It worked great and still looks nice. Now I'm on the hunt for more wallpaper discards.😉 I love using new and different materials, as well as using what I already have. Thanks for the ideas.

Surprised to see you put the paper shim inside the folder with the foam. I have a selection of different weight card and paper (which I don't like the colour, pattern or texture of) to use as shims, and I always put them between the plate and the folder. I think it prevents that line from forming on your embossing material.

Great video, Sam! Thank you for testing all of these materials and sharing your results with us. I really like the way the metal embosses, it looks fantastic and durable, the only thing that makes me hesitate is the edges and how sharp they might be, and whether they might cut someone? I think the aluminum might be a better alternative - I'd just use a much heavier-weight aluminum foil vs. the one you showed in the video. I'm surprised by the foam, I thought it might revert back to being mostly flat or lose a lot of its detail, so thank you especially for showing that one! :)
