The three Chinese cities missed were all in Heilongjiang: Qiqihar, Daqing, and Harbin

i was really shocked by how few US cities are 1M+ thought there was more
@JordanPeace

@@Terji most cities in the US have much smaller boundaries than their urban areas / metro areas cover. The city itself will often be mostly just the downtown and some surrounding neighborhoods while a lot more of the population will live in suburbs that are legally separate towns. So the city of Atlanta for example has a population of around 500k while the metro area of Atlanta has well over 5 million people in it.

@@JordanPeace True, but the same is true for most countries. The city proper of Tokyo has 14 M population, while the metro area has well over 37 M; and e.g. the Dutch Utrecht did not make it to the list with a city pop of some 300k and a metro of over 1 M. It can still be surprising that the city centres in the US apparently have too low a density such that their city proper alone is not enough to reach 1 M.

Usually it depends on what is included in the city boundaries, could end up with a smaller than real life population or the opposite by including neighboring towns
@roevhaal578

@@peperoni_pepino To some extent sure but in the case for Tokyo the metro is several cities that grew into eachother over time, you can't call the Tokyo metro one city.

I think missed Chinese cities are in China's top right corner in Heilongjiang. Harbin maybe can cover all neighbouring cities

The one I'm missing is Kisangani, in D.R.C. Wikipedia lists it as 1.6 million, and I'm pretty sure it's definitely over a million, but I suspect there are no reliable official sources

kinda crazy a city so famous as San Francisco doesn't have a million people. Just over 800k according to wikipedia

It's more "The SF Bay Area", it's not really a city but a metropolitan region. Bay Area has close to 8 million population...so 800k is pretty misleading. SF is famous, but it is an extremely populated region (unless you only factor in the city limits).
@arrowheaded
Жыл бұрын
@@_yellow The region DOES have a lot more lol. SF's city limits are less than 50 miles squared... 800k is a very deceptive.
