I've been skating for a month, the other day I went to a park and decided to try learning to roll in. Hey John, there actually is a reason not to push mongo. When you push regularly your center of gravity is over the center of the board making it a lot more stable and easy to keep your weight centered. When you push mongo your center of gravity is on the back of the board and makes it a lot harder to balance. Obviously people who have been skating. along time like Tiago aren't going to have a problem with it, but as someone who has been teaching skating for a long time I can say a lot of my students are noticeably more stable when pushing normal

Come on if you don't mall grab you have like two options: rub the griptape on your body/clothes or rub the griptape on your forearm, while trying to keep the board balanced and not wiggling as you walk....yeaaaaahhh way better than mall grabbing...suuuuuure LOL

@@ollieanthem9213 I believe is that for starting is "safer". Because if the board gets stuck by a pebble, you have your front foot ready to just do a step forward and not fall. Mainly this is because they have not learned how to shift the weight to avoid this. When they push, they send their center of gravity forward, because "that's where you are trying to push".
@Andyjamesontheweb

Mongo puts your weight on the back of the board instead of centering it. Think about where your hips end up over the board. Pushing "normal" is actually much more efficient and effective.

When I first started getting into the world of YouTubing/vlogging content, especially in the skateboarding world, Chris Chann was always my favorite for his educational and inspirational, skating based content.. which is kinda how I found you. But he's gone in a direction I don't resonate with anymore as far as content(no offense and only love and honor to him). You have remained truly centered and on a rhythm/path that I genuinely love and benefit from as a human being and skater. Actually, I used to be annoyed of you at one point a few years back, but you've grown and become someone I really respect. I hope you see this. And I hope Chris Chann does too. I miss when his content was more wholesome and educational like this. All love, all love. God bless 💜💜

Great video! I do have to disagree with the $100 requirement, and mongo. While yes a $100 board will be far better, a beginner skater doesn’t need to spend that much on something they may not even stick with. As for mongo if you’re able to push smoothly and controlled, there’s nothing wrong with it. Most of us aren’t pros bombing lines in the street so no harm in it...again as long as you don’t look goofy and out of control doing it.

The best way to improve quickly in the beginning is just try to learn a bit of everything and get used to your board. Being able to ride around confidently makes learning tricks way easier later on. Learning how to balance on things like ramps and quarter pipes first will make landing and balancing flat ground tricks way easier. Trying to learn things like ollies and kickflips before you can even tic-tac around the local skatepark means you're rushing ahead too quickly before learning the basics.

Tip. 7 is the tip I give to people at the skatepark most often and one I take to heart. If I'm trying something new and I mess up 15 times, I just stop and go do something I know I can land 100% of the time. Even if it's totally unrelated to the trick I'm trying, because I believe in that old saying, "the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result." So I don't. If I'm trying something new on a ledge and I can't land it, I go skate the 2 stair or the manny pad for like 3-5 mins, then go sit down for a minute, drink a little water, and return to it. It actually blows my mind how often I do this, and when I come back and within my first two or three tries I can tell that I got much closer to landing it, or that I now understand something about the trick that I didn't understand before because I was just uselessly trying it over and over without thinking about why I'm messing it up.

I think skateboard board size actually matters a _lot_ . It's well worth finding your sweetspot size early on. Honestly, I reeaally don't like cruising around on an 8.0" or 7.78" board, versus a 8.25" and 8.5". But flipping a 8.5" , for a beginner, will be tougher. Mostly due to overall bigger weight of everything. My sweet spot size seems to be 8.25", people smaller than me might prefer 8.0". I do think the difference between 7.78" and 8.0" is slim enough for it to _almost_ not matter. But it does still matter. Some setups will also be so much heavier to pop the board with, it'll ruin basic progression. I'd actually recommend a fairly lightweight setup for beginners, but a 'basic complete' of a decent brand will do as well. Also, I have to politely disagree how pushing mongo _is_ more difficult or clumsy, because you really have to put your weight forward unnaturally far for the board not to pop up or turn erratically and you keep having to 'double step' to get to the final foot position, instead of just stepping on with the pushing foot only. I wouldn't say it is 'wrong' for getting into fakie, however you'd still do the 'double step' adjustment most of the time. I'd say the main problem is how people don't push regularly with confidence and speed, and adjust foot position from there. I mean, there's no real practical benefit to pushing mongo, even when at the end of the day people shouldn't really care either way.

pushing mongo since 30 years, think i´m long enough in skateboarding to do so for the rest of my time. have to say, i´m left footed, so it´s the choise between pushing mongo or staying goofy!

I'd like to add to point number 6. As an older overweight out of shape older skater getting back into skating from scratch the fear I have is due to lack on conditioning/strength. I'm a goofy foot skater but for some reason my left leg just feels unstable causing me to get very tentative when trying to drop in etc. Also point #7 is very very valid. Thanks for this super helpful video.

Unfortunately i push mongo. It's actually a huge problem, because it's really difficult to steer the board when your weight is at the back. When you push regular, you weight is on the front, and you can correct your steering. It's obvi not impossible, but it's a lot harder. But if you naturally push mongo, it's really hard to change it. It's a balance thing

Mongo push makes you turn your body from left to right side, while normal push -- your body turned one way all the time. I use mall grab because I don't like touch fresh griptape with my fingers.

Bruh the reason I don't mall grab is cuz my truckss are all crusty and gunked from grinding on stuff. I don't want all that wax and dirt on my hands, not mall grabbing is totally practical who cares about "unwritten rules" hahaha.

I'm always terrified about judge ment, because I'm normally the only girl at the park and of I say so myself I think I'm pretty good, but everyone just stares at me and if something fails I hear faint giggles and I'm always terrified to go to a skatepark.

i feel like pushing mongo is more dangerous for newbies, simply because of the fact that you're planting your weight on the back truck, and leaving the front loose to bounce all over the place from cracks and debris, causing a loss of control. ive seen plenty of new skaters wipe out simply because thing got a little squirrelly while pushing mongo.

When i started i pushed mongo goofy. I wish instead of learning to switch to the front foot from friends who said all the pros use there front foot when i was like 11. I still used that foot but switched to regular stance. I would have probably been 15x better. lol. In the long run. mongo is something you push switch when your going the opposite direction of your cardinal center.

So, if you were to recommend, like, a frequency which we should track our progress, John, what would that be, perchance? Weekly? Monthly? YEARLY? That seems a little long to me, but you´re the expert. 😁✌️❤️
