I have an admittedly sizeable list of movies that if I see are coming on it's mandatory that I at least watch part of them (I'll never drop cable until I'm forced to or can't afford it, the On Demand world has ruined the excitement and thrill of turning on a radio or television and discovering something new or hearing the right song or movie come on at the perfect moment). But Predator is very high on that list. Though I tend to drift off to other things and leave it on in the background once Arnold is alone. That's also a real testament to how great Predator is though, half of the movie has no dialogue but is still great. He doesn't need to talk to a volleyball to explain what's happening, you just understand it.

This was an epic movie despite what critics had to say about it. This movie introduced a new alien nightmarish creature that has become an icon in sci-fi films. I still say this movie was the best of all the Predator movies that have been made, because you just cannot beat the original. I am surprised that they did not have a sequel with Arnold reprising his role as, "Dutch". I know originally Arnold was approached for Predator 2, but he did not agree with the script having the action take place in a city. Danny Glover did a good job in Predator 2, but it just seemed to be missing something without Arnold being in the film. The movie definitely has an impact given the fact the original was made 36 years ago, and we still are talking about this film. Every time I watch Predator, it feels like it's the first time I have seen it and that in itself proves how good of movie Predator is, despite the critics. I hear there is a possible reboot in the making but given the reboot flops Hollywood has been pumping out, I hope they leave this movie alone, or at least keep their political agendas out of the movie. Of course, this is Hollywood and that will be a virtual impossibility because they just cannot stop themselves.

If you ever do more Predator trivia: The novelisation(which was based off an early draft of the script) opens with an homage to Alien, with the Predator waking up from hypersleep. In Arnie's autobiography, 'Total Recal' he said he was so cold being covered in mud that he kept himself from shivering by drinking Jagermeister schnapps. He admits he was pretty blitzed by the time they got around to telling 'Action!' AVP Galaxy has the original shooting script, which sees Dutch realising what the guerilla soldiers were to his elite team is what they are to the Predator.

I like the multicultural subtext of the story. The cast is a diverse group of humans coming together to defeat a predatory alien from outer space. Movies of the 80s (especially action movies- Predator, Lethal Weapon, etc.) were great at blending in racial issues for a common battle without beating the audience over the head with the message. I made some great friends in school because these films had a character for everyone to be on the playground.

My favorite movie of all time. It’s the reason I became a Arny fan as a kid!

I especially, liked the 'End Credits' where everybody are themselves as the Director says, " ... give me a pose." NOW, I know where that comic book fits end....The End...... Nice Work 'Minty'!!

I was watching it the other night with John McTiernan's director's commentary. He said the scene with Billy's evil laugh at the end came from a dream, where someone was trying to disarm an atomic bomb, but only had seconds to do it, and could never catch up to it. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up! I think the Terminator was from a dream, too. The cyborg in flames was a vision James Cameron had. There's a quote from Vanilla Sky that kinda sums it up, "the subconscious is a powerful thing..."

Great video as always Minty. Predator has to be the archetypal action movies of the 80s: - Arny or Stallone - check - Set in a jungle - check - Unbelievable plot - check - Corny one liners - check - Corrupt government/corporate official (with the team) - check - Most of the team dies - check - Lots of explosions - check - One on one face off at the end where the good guy wins - check - A-Team style resourceful weapon building montage - check ... I could keep going. The only thing it is missing is a kid that turns out to be more resourceful than most of the rest of the cast, although Anna kind of fills that roll.
