I’d say that New York and London should have probably tied for #1. NYC and London are very VERY similar cities. They’ve even been referred to as essentially twin cities. On top of that, I was surprised not to see either Paris or Hong Kong on this list. Paris is easily one of the top 10 most important global cities for its cultural impact alone. And Hong Kong was, and arguably still is, one of the biggest economic powerhouses in East Asia.

I definitely would have taken Seoul for the reasons you mentioned, especially since it has a major political sway with the upcoming Korean questions. But I wouldn't take Hong Kong and Shanghai. Hong Kong was only relevant when it was the only link between China and the rest of the world - it's losing power ever since China opened up in 1979. Shanghai is an important financial center, but other financial centers like Shenzhen and Hangzhou may reduce Shanghai's importance. It's the same reason I think Singapore may possibly not have the same sway in the future. If China succeeds with One Belt it would bypass Malacca, and that would significantly reduce Singapore's importance.

Washington is not "important" beyond politics. London's power is why English became the most spoken language on earth. It is one of the top financial markets, politically important in the G7 and security council, a nuclear power but also has a massive culture influence on the world. It is still a centre for fashion, art, music, theatre, literature etc London is also a meeting point for the most powerful people in the world. Most of the world's billionaires have homes there and most powerful and important people in every field passes through there constantly.

I find all of these cities and these facts fascinating, but I'm still amazed by the beginning with the fact that Paris could theoretically buy South Africa and that New York City, Los Angeles, and Tokyo's GDPs are higher than Canada, Australia, and South Korea
@Luboman411
6 жыл бұрын
Well, the GDP of these cities are calculated taking metro area populations into account. Once you do that, it's not that surprising. Tokyo's metro area has 36 million people, 12 million more people than all of Australia. So obviously Tokyo will have a much larger economy than Australia or Canada (which has around 37 million people). Paris could buy South Africa because the Paris metro area has 10 million people whereas South Africa has 50 million. But an average Parisian is way wealthier than an average South African. Hence why Paris has a larger economy.
