The story about Shelley Duvall really changed how I thought about the Shining. Now that I've read the book, it's the only way to fly imo. Yes, the movie is still iconic, but Kubrick took it waaaay to far with her. Duvall often lost hair and sleep over her days on set. Meanwhile Kubrick tried to be as nice as possible to the child actor who played Danny. So, the man CAN be nice, but he made it a point to actually horrify his main actress. Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" ruined that actress, Tippi Hedren, as well. Not just emotionally AND physically, but it really ruined her life. She was an up and coming Hollywood babe who had a lot of opportunities. When work began on "The Birds", she signed an exclusive contract. Then, in an attempt to get her to REALLY look scared on most of the scenes, Alfred genuinely tortured her at times. Apparently, old AH was known for being a first class ass hat to nearly everyone he worked with, ESPECIALLY women. There's a scene where she's being hit in the face by birds until she is bleeding from the scratches... guess who's throwing them at her? Guess who's demanding more and more takes of that sequence? Never looked at Hitchcock movies the same way again.

Preminger used the same tactic on Tom Tryon in The Cardinal. He constantly abused him verbally and even sacked him when his parents came to visit the set, later re-hiring him when he thought he was sufficiently humiliated. Yes, he got a good performance, but apparently Tryon could never bring himself to view the finished film. Blokes can be on the receiving end too. No excuse.

Some things simply aren't as important as somebody else's well being, and Kubrick crossed WAY over the line with Duvall, I think she ended up traumatized and I wonder how much that has played part in her mental illness today? Very, very sad... Here's a few other not-acted moments: - Kurt Russel's shocked reaction when he blows up the thing incarnation after the blood test in The Thing is genuine, he wasn't expecting the explosion to be anywhere near as big as it ended up being. - I forget which James Bond movie it was (Dr. No?), but there was a scene where a tarantula is crawling over Bond while he's on a bed, played by Sean Connery. Well Connery is extremely phobic of spiders, and while it was on a sheet of glass held over him his horrified stare is 100% genuine.

There is a real moment like this in a James Bond movie with Sean Connery; it's not "Dr. No" but "Thunderball." A shark was supposed to swim in a lane where Connery was blocked off by a transparent plate of glass (something similar was done with the tarantula in "Dr. No" without issue). The shark instead wedged into the lane Connery was submerged in. The shark swam by without incident, but Connery was shocked and director Terrance Young left in his wide-eyed reaction.

The laser cutter scene in Goldfinger was filmed with a guy behind the plate cutting the plate with a blowtorch and getting really close to burning off his nuts for real. The fear on Bond's face in that scene is very much genuine.
