And obviously Escape From New York. Snake was partially based on Kurt Russels character. Konami almost got sued by the film company but director John Carpenter stepped in and prevented that because he likes Hideo Kojima Carpenter: "No such legal action was taken. Why? "I know the director of those games, and he's a nice guy," Carpenter told THR. "Or at least he's nice to me."

The similarity was even more blatant in the earlier games. Especially MG2 where the profile pics of Snake and Boss were essentially screengrabs of Kurt Russel and Sean Connery. Not sure which movie Seans photo was from. But it most certainly is him. Though in later ports of MG2 these profile pics have been altered, I think. As they now look more like the Yoji Shinkawa designs from MGS and onwards. On a similar note. Snake in the first Metal Gear games cover art was himself visually traced from Michael Biehn in Terminator. This rabbit hole sure goes on forever. :P

The original Nick Fury comic (1963) was based on Snake Plissken, too. Both Stan Lee and Kirby wanted a secret agent stealth, soldier/James Bond character, and that's what they came up with. Kinda weird Carpenter claimed it as his own character when it was loseley based on another character.. but he didn't sue Kojima anyway.

You're missing one of the most important Schwarzenegger films for Metal Gear inspiration: Twins (1988). The first time I suggested this to someone, I was kidding, but then I rewatched the movie as an adult: there's "well I have the crappy genes" angst, but most of all, the movie's dubiously-accurate exposition about genetic expression sounds a *lot* like the infodump in MGS1.

"Where Eagles Dare" is one the movies that most reminded me of Metal Gear Solid. It's a sneaking mission to steal a secret Nazi weapon located in an isolated castle and free a hostage (a capture Allied general) Ofc nothing is what it seems and character all have their motivations and there's plenty double agents, plot twists and shifting alliances. It's more similar to MGS3 though. But it's a great movie, it has Clint Eastwood and every MGS fan should see it. You won't regret it.

Great stuff! Maybe in the future you can look into some of the comparisons of Kojima and David Lynch's work, especially how Twin Peaks and MGS take a similar approach? I know Twin Peaks was a big influence on Japan as a whole when it aired. Then again, that's also a very deep rabbit hole... But I'm sure there's also stuff to compare from Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and so on.

I don't know dude. Some of these connections are tenuous at best. Having a character called Deepthroat isn't any more a connection to the movie All the President's Men than it is to the real Watergate scandal. A sniper using an injured person as bait isn't inherently a reference to Full Metal Jacket. Snipers actually do that, that's why it's in the movie. Your claim that MGS takes paranoia and secrecy from the X-files is basically silly, there's hundreds of spy movies and TV shows that all contain paranoia and secrecy, there's no reason to single out the X-files.
@FuturasoundProductions
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I put the X-Files in there just as a special mention, not because I was sure it influenced MGS1. I think X-Files and MGS1 speak to the same era, that's all. All the others on the list though, Kojima has mentioned on record - if I do this again, I'll be sure to include citations to back me up better.
