I used to like word art and actually thought the signs were cute and sometimes funny. Until my teenagers started laughing that we had to be told what to do thru signs! EAT, GATHER, FAMILY, LOVE, HOPE, GIVE THANKS... etc.... I took a step back and realized our house looked like a bunch of road signs telling us what to do vs. art.
@LindsayLiving
3 жыл бұрын
Same! I used to love it. And it’s all fun and games when you buy one or two. Then you receive a few as gifts, add a couple more and pretty soon you’re reading your whole home. Similarly, one day I looked up and realized it was adding physical and mental clutter when I craved cozy calm. Visual art and some open space gives that to me more than text art. 🤷🏻♀️

My friend put up word art in the kitchen, there is a window but on the other side is a family room, added on after the house was originally built...my family owns the house and I helped renovate it in 2019, we didn’t want to cover the window permanently but my friend had a great idea on how to temporarily cover it, after the kitchen was finished she took some of the laminate floor boards (hardwood was too expensive to do) and her husband fit it in the window, they added a frame and a shelf for the soap and such, she put some words on it, only place she added word are but it works. She’s super close with her family so it says family love and something else I can’t remember. It’s not too big and not the first thing you notice about the kitchen...I am not a huge fan of word art but for her I think it works.

Glass blocks used in interior applications can be quite effective. I live in a studio where the bedroom has been delineated with the upper wall done in glass blocks so light still gets in and is reflected from what would otherwise be a rather dark corner, and privacy is preserved. I also had a glass block shower in one house - very pretty.

Spent a lot of money to replace them as a custom order hung at a height that allows sightlines of the wood work. Plus, it totally goes with the 1950s vibe of the house. The curtains were beautiful but much more maintenance and blinds allow my pets to move in and out without the worry of hair clinging to the fabric. I'm a firm believer that no design element is 100% wrong, there will always be some application where it is appropriate , if done in moderation.

I picked up some glass blocks at an auction and have been saving them for whichever house I end up renovating that needs interior room lighting through filtered light from an exterior room, which is a perfectly lovely and absolutely practical use for the "horrible, outdated" old blocks. I personally think it's ill-informed and pushes wasteful practices (pushes consumerism and land fill dumping) for an "influencer" to loudly proclaim which home and clothing fashion choices are "totally outdated", and influence others to rush to get rid of it because it's suddenly not cool, and then they spend money they don't have to update a house they liked just fine before the video. It's a very personal decision which objects each person deems important to them; following fashion is only allowing someone else to tell you what they think is the best thing and trying to make you buy it because "they" have deemed it cool, rather than being your own person and an adult and deciding for yourself what you want because of what "you" deem cool for yourself. Why would people spend their hard-earned money on things based on random other people's personal opinions of what's cool??? It flabbergasts me

Lots of great tips, and one tiny point to add... if a client loves and is dedicated to a certain time period in their home (mid-century modern comes to mind) a few of these items can become a classic. Always important to take in the full story of the home and family to. be sure we are choosing for our life and not someone else's fantasy; which can lead to wasting money and resources on constant do-overs. We sold a mid-century classic a few years ago, removed the vertical blinds and the new owners absolutely wanted and loved vertical blinds. So all rules always "depend" on the humans in the situation.

I'm not working with clients at the moment, but even when I do they generally work with me because they want to hear my opinion. If you dig deeper into my channel than just this video you'd see pretty quickly I'm all about sustainable design that honors the history of a home. And rules? Generally meant to be toyed with.

You're spot on. Every time I see one of those grotesque kitchens, I just think of Americans with more money than taste or cultural sophistication. When they try to do 'French country kitchens'...oh dear. Again, I see photos of that and just think 'American cottage-core shabby chic'. I never think of Provence.

Ha!! We just added glass block in our master bathroom to replace a GIANT picture window over the bath tub- who created THAT trend?! I prefer a picture window since most of the time I'm not bathing in there - but I have a tiny bathroom in our MCM home. 😂 I like inset top-down bottom-up shades for privacy and light without sacrificing view. @@LindsayLiving I get it! Lol. Our neighbors 2nd story deck is also facing the window, so blinds had to be closed, and they got nasty from the condensation in the bathroom as well. Small master bath, and most of the exterior wall is the picture window Over the tub (woth a glass surround shower next to that, and in full view. It was definitely an afterthought in this house. The upside to the glass block window is that my plants are super happy (oh, and the neighbors won’t see our naked tear ends).🤣

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Farmhouse sure is a hot button in design right now - people either love it or hate it. I don't mind a refined, rustic, traditional version that relies less on word art and more on antiques.
@kate2create738

That's exactly what went wrong with the farmhouse design, too many people didn't live in authentic historical farmhouses to understand the appeal. There's too many cookie cutter homes forced into a style that didn't match the building, thus the style was not going to work unless it was placed in the right building. It's funny with the shiplap trend that it seemed off because most of the modern shiplap was not matching the type of shiplap my family's farmhouse/bungalow had, as it has skinnier planks compared to some that seemed to be a foot in height. Add don't get me started how unrealistic the all white interior is, let's just say that if the family did live on a farm that white would be the last color of choice for the walls and furniture.

Board and batten is gonna be in these videos in the next several years 🤔 that's what I hate about today's internet - it takes everything that's cool and overuses it to such a painful point that it becomes eyeroll-worthy. Be it memes/jokes/interior design/fashion - you name it. Things become outdated crazy quickly nowadays just because people don't know how to be original so they just hop on the trends and make copy of a copy of a copy of everything 🥲🥲🥲

Trend overload definitely happens to people - especially if you haven't defined your style. That's an interesting point about timeframes. Our home search unearthed so many of the things on this list, and we found it fun to think about all the ways we could update each space if we made it our own. It's fun to watch/learn as things either trend through designers or through social media and how they rise/fall. I enjoy learning about design and trying out things that resonate with me. I can appreciate some trends even if they aren't things I would try in my home. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Now THAT is a great example of art featuring typography - created by an artist, meaningful and valuable to you in your life, and following a “less is more” approach to design that I can appreciate. So much of what she advocates will be similarly stale soon enough. #1 on that list is wall mouldings, particularly in that French style. What makes something “off”, like shiplap, is that it lacks context. Shiplap is great in a coastal cottage or cabin in the woods, not suburban homes.

I love glass blocks in a bathroom. I feel like it’s the best way to add light to a bathroom without needing curtains or blinds in a bathroom (way too icky to clean) And as for paneling/shiplap. I see no difference between board and batten versus shiplap as long as it’s done well (with real wood) I think the takeaway here is that as long as done well with quality materials versus cheap quick fixes, it will probably be timeless

I just can't do glass blocks. They are just not for me, but I'm glad you've found them beautiful and functional in your space. Since making this video I have continued to research wood paneling styles to really test my opinion. I agree that real wood is a MUST. Also, glass block instead at a shower can be a cool design feature. Lol I just moved into an apartment where the longest wall some 20 feet are white vertical blinds. I’ve been trying to rationalize those things since I moved in especially when I learned all the rules for what drapes they’ll allow! Ugh!

Then people wouldn't all have cookie cutter decor that becomes hated just because it's ubiquitous. Keep us forever-changing our homes, our clothes, our make up, our hairstyles, etc. so that we spend spend spend. I do need to make a comment on word art. I don’t like a ton of it, but I like the positive vibes that word art can brings into a home. Especially in such a negative world.

Good design takes time and like you mention here, my fiancée and I are saving up for the big things we want to do in our home. I’m speaking directly to new homeowners like us or others who are finally in a place where they can begin to make the changes they crave. In any creative field, like art and design, trends are simply waves of new ideas - not to be feared or scorned. Options are out there and for design enthusiasts like myself, it’s fun to learn about all styles - looking to the past and into the future - to gain an understanding of what we want to pursue in our homes. If something is detracting from your overall design, it’s changeable. I hope it goes without saying that what you do in your home is completely your choice. In my latest video I addressed word art again and how to keep it tasteful if you enjoy using it in your home. You can find it at time stamp 2:38 here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aZ33YeBmGalgKg And as always - that’s just my opinion - thanks for sharing yours! Good luck with your design! 🤍

Me, too! But...not the usual kind. I shop Goodwill and have found a couple things that are more unique, or have a timeless feel, that I change out with the seasons. For me, I have a few spots on my walls that are saved specifically to change out when seasons and holidays come up, and sometimes word art just fits a change in mood. For example, I have a plaque on my kitchen wall right now, that has an old Gaelic saying for St. Patrick's day that I keep up through March, along with a welcome sign with clovers that is in my living room through the month, too. However, for Easter, when I take them down, I'll replace them with items that are not word art, though I have some other seasons and just simply times it feels fun to put word art up. One of my favorites is a ceramic plaque that says "what if the hokey pokey is what it's all about"...simple, fun, and not what you find everywhere. 😊

Tile counter tops first came on the scene in the 1970s? Strange. I had a house built in the 1950s that had them in kitchen and both baths. All original pastels. So did all the other houses in the neighborhood unless someone had renovated them out. They were cool then and they are still cool now.

Although tile countertops appeared in homes long before then, they reached a tipping point in the design world in the late seventies and throughout the eighties due to the wide variety of colors and styles of ceramic tiles that become more readily available. I've never been a fan, even when they look pretty, because cleaning that grout every day is so tedious. That's why you see a lot more solid surface countertops today. If you can handle the cleanup and love the look, fantastic!

Glass block windows have their functions. Glass block in a bathroom shower stall lets in light while maintaining privacy and not having to worry about water seeping through the window's edges. In some areas, glass block is used on basement windows. Depending on the basement, glass block windows there provide light and privacy and also are harder to break into than a regular window. The last thing you want is lovely clear windows and then metal bars on them for security. Also, tile countertops have been around much longer than the 70's. My first condo was in a extravagant Spanish-Renaissance-Revival building built just before the Depression in the 20's. Jade tile in one bathroom, purpley-lavendar tile in another. My parents' mid century house still has them on the bathroom floors, walls, and counters. In baby blue! And the counter is so low, you'll need a lumbar support belt to lean over to wash your face. If I have the chance to buy my sibs out when my dad moves or pulls a Prince Philip, the FIRST thing I am doing is taking a sledge hammer to the baby blue upstairs bath, the pink half bath and the white downstairs bath. It should be theraputic!!

Hi Katherine - thanks for sharing your thoughts! I respectfully disagree - but I can totally see where you're coming from. We have similar priorities with different strategy. I agree that dust and dirt collect around sliding doors - I would prefer washing curtains semi-regularly to remove dust over constantly cleaning/dusting vertical blinds. I would honestly be scared to have non-opening windows in a basement space. I'm marrying a firefighter who's a stickler for easily accessible exits, and having egress windows not only lets in more unfiltered light, but provides easy escape routes. I’m building a home with tons of shiplap, I believe it’s the design of the home that determines if shiplap is a trend that needs to go. When you see “modern farmhouse” with ridiculous signage, busy faux plant accents, mirror windows, stark white everything and empty picture frame ensembles to name a few, it’s a turn off. You can successfully create a pleasing space with shiplap, and in my opinion done right, it’s also timeless. It’s also cheaper than drywall. I have a higher end futon that we use in our guest bedroom after having bought a series of air mattresses that always seem to end up deflated overnight. I agree with you on everything else. 😊
