Brad Sylva Almost, but it’s not obvious what words to use to be that way. You would think you could use any words as long as they weren’t outright offensive and your tone was collected. But specific words do matter.
@amaracea

Brad Sylva Also, never be polite. Be kind. This right here is an example of specific words mattering. Socially speaking, “polite” means fake and flattering and bottling things up. “Kind” means honest but in a helpful and uplifting way.

@MrDoctorproctor

It’s a great phrase to use. It could be described as a pre suppositional softener.
@ThrashLawPatentsAndTMs

I think there's perhaps a cultural difference in hearing/using that phrase ("is that fair?") from the North East/Southern US (and perhaps elsewhere). When I hear "is this fair" or "is that fair" I go 'shields-up' and immediately ask myself "who is this fast talker?" and "what is this guy trying to pull over on me?" and "what's being left out?" Why? "Is that fair" begs a "yes" response -- it's a soft leading question -- and leading questions make a listener wonder "why is this guy trying to get me to agree with him? what more is going on?"; whereas a more natural ask "what do you think?" (or similar) is less likely to raise a listener's defenses. Anyway . . . Is that fair? ;-)

Soft skills do matter. I am teaching soft skills to my fellow IT professionals all the time, because in IT we have this issue: smart brains wired to a computer, not to a real person. With computers, it’s so much easier. People might not appreciate your precise answers with no understanding of how you put your words. Especially it’s relatable for Russian developers I work with. Brilliant, genius engineers, with literally no understanding of how to communicate their way through. I’m the soft skills person in the company; and oh my do I have to talk things through all the time to fix smth my team members broke by their style of talking.

Self-made millionaires didn't get to the two-comma club without doing things a little differently from the rest. Various researchers who studied hundreds of self-made millionaires for several years have found that many tend to practice different habits or display heightened traits that help them build wealth. Many millionaires, for example, allocate their time differently - they spend more time focusing on personal growth, planning for investments, and working, and less time sleeping

@@Talkinglife the sleep part is false. 16 hours of time being awake fueled by 8 hours of sleep is more efficient and healthier than 18 hours of work on 6 hours of sleep.

Unfortunately, putting these words into practice (especially in a corporate environment) takes humility. I use all of these words on a daily basis “unconsciously”...if you have to consciously use these words it’ll come off as disingenuous.

Tender Days - Even over an email or a meeting if you already know what your colleagues are “really” like - no amount of habit forming or selective wording can hide that- this video is good for people that see the bigger picture (which is a rare commodity these days)

@@Showtime10000 Take a moment, think of everyone you so far. The ones coming into ur mind, the one u would associate with, the ones u love to spend time together.. one way or other all of them will be using these words in their conversation. Which made u to stick to them .

@Tender Days that is a risk. When family members disseminate trigger words (or loved ones) it’s easy find the source. Outside of that especially in the corporate world; what “please” & “Thank you” means to you and me in a predictable setting; could be seen as a sign of weakness to someone brought up on entirely different set of values. You always have the read the room/email in a concrete jungle.
