You know you have in a game 30 bullets in magazine and 90 reserve ammo, shoot once, reload (discard clip) and then you're left with 89 reserve ammo. Mafia is not like that. You shoot once reload and the lose 29 precious tommy gun bullets because the almost full magazine was discarded on the ground. It's terrible, but i like taking risks, it's part of the experience.

I feel like that's what makes Gameranx so much more enjoyable to watch over other gaming channels. They're both entertaining and non-cynical. Despite often having some arguably CLICKBAITY or at least EYECATCHY titles that use absolute terms, the content within the videos never state opinions in an objective fashion. Falcon, Jake B, etc never come off like they know more than their audience. They just come off like they have their own opinion, and always phrase those opinions in an open-minded way. One could argue this level of tolerance is an unchallenging, overly-neutral way to cover topics, but in a world where video game coverage is almost always sensationalized, I feel like there's merit in having a channel who represents gaming in a candid yet still passionate fashion. They aren't hype trains nor do they pretend to be journalists. And, while I'm not gonna pretend like a lot of their content is substantial, it is a refreshing take and maybe a teensy weensy bit poignant in how it presents its junkfood content in a way that at least _sounds_ interested in itself, and not just a guy reading a script, pretending to care.

I think it depends on the kind of game. Mass Effect is a shooter RPG and as such the "getting to know your crew" is a pretty important part of it, but in games like the mentioned GTA IV it kind of keeps you away from the fun part of the game. Especially because in ME it's mostly dialogue and missions to help the crew and get a new power (optional) in GTA IV you're kind of forced to go along with it.

Yeah, I really like the navigation aspect when exploring. And in Subnautica (one of the examples given) it makes the world feel much bigger. Before long you have beacons and a compass anyway and if you can't navigate with those maybe you just don't like exploration in a game. I do think a nice touch for some games would be to have, instead of a smart GPS app full of automarkers style minimap, instead have the in-game equivalent of a paper map (maybe even hand drawn and inaccurate) that you can pull up (full screen) and write notes and put markers on yourself as you find things. That would kind of be an in-game record you made yourself of places you'd been and things you'd discovered/encountered. Would really help when picking up a game after not playing for awhile and just being able to look back on your journey.

Only having a minimap but no large map overview (GTA 3, Midtown Madness) is probably what made me learn to navigate in the city so well. Look for clues, which street looks like what on the map, where is the north, where do I want to go. Gonna add one: RE Village's inventory shuffling. It's one thing to have an inventory limit. It's another to have a grid where the player has to move things around on it like a lame puzzle just so bigger items can fit. The realism doesn't apply evenly, either. For example: I ran across some magnum ammo, but had too much stuff in my inventory to pick it up, EVEN though the ammo was immediately going to be loaded into the gun. If the devs are hung up on realism enough to make you rearrange your "suitcase" of items, then why can't you set an item down for two seconds while reloading?

On the other hand ... a reviewer said something like "this is a world begging not just to be saved, but also to be *explored*," and constantly sweating over the hard deadline is no fun, and continually checking the guide to make sure you're on schedule isn't much fun either.

I figured it out the first day playing. Yet years later millions upon millions of oblivious players. Ok here's the trick... Jumping up a climb causes you to slide down. Rain causes you to slide down every few moments. However, jumping you slide less than from rain. Didn't you ever notice this? Ok, basically every few movements in the rain, hit the jump and you will slide less than the rain will cause. Thus, you can scale anything, even in the rain. Just bring enough stamina.

Most of these really add up to the immersion. Especially the time limit. I like to explore and experience that world that the developers spent countless hours designing! But the one thing I can think of that is really a burden instead of a feature is having to go back to complete something. I'm looking at you, new Tomb Raider installments! In the first few chapters there will always be a tomb, a door or a wall that you can't open/cross/climb because your equipment isn't fully upgraded yet and you have to go back later in the game. If I spent endless hours trying to complete all the different little challenges that each area has before I move on to the next, I don't wanna go back for the last little detail. It feels repetitive and worn out. Just give all the tools I need and a good enough challenge and I'll be happy to finish 100% of each area the first time!
@smokharn3699
8 ай бұрын
This is quite a common thing that developers add so that they add a lot of "replayability" within your save file. Having to go back with better equipment and such makes it so that you play more of the game, obviously. It's as you said, these guys spent countless of hours designing these things. It's a standardized thing in LEGO games for example. Having to go back once you've unlocked a character so that you can go to an area an get that minikit. Personally, I don't dislike it. It really depends on the game though. Some can be really tedious. But in the end, unless you're forced to go back which a lot of games don't do, you can just skip it and do the main story and be happy with that as your playthrough. I think it's understandable and can be fun but it can also be abused and poorly implemented.

Operation Flashpoint was interesting in this regard. Enemies could be janky but once they knew you were around, they would keep looking. I actually found out the game had a day and night cycle because I spent soooo long hiding inside a tank during a botched stealth mission that the sun started to rise. At that point I just legged it, managed to not be seen by the crew of a BMP that happened to climb the hill beside me and made it to the mission endpoint, only to be scolded that I only destroyed one enemy vehicle. I think I had to re-do missions in that game more than in any other game before or since.

And then voice that as if everyone else is on the same page. And then to use that as a justification to argue that games should just be goofy fun, and that any time the game world pushes back against you is wrong. The worst encumbrance I found was in H1Z1 (haven't played it in years so this might be out of date). You didn't have a carry weight, your clothes did. Even games known for unforgiving carry weights let you pick up a weapon or two in your back pocket. When I played H1Z1 it didn't have 'hardcore' weight limits, it went all in. You can fit a handful of 9mm rounds in your shirt pocket, maybe a few snacks in your jeans but that's it. Good luck finding a backpack though. The lack of carry capacity is 'balanced' by the scarcity of the loot, or at least it would be if you could actually carry the one item you found in two hours that wasn't nailed down.

An addendum about the time limit in Fallout- There were TWO time limits. The first is the 150 days to find a new water purification chip, and the second was a 500 day deadline until The Master's super mutants would find your vault and massacre your mates. The most interesting thing was that you could tell a water merchant in The Hub about your mission, and they would send a caravan to your vault to top up the water supply. This would extend your first deadline by 100 days, but in turn this would tip off the mutants to the location of Vault 13, and the attack will happen sooner. A patch later extended the time limit to 14 years (or something like that) because people loved to faff about.

#6: My Time At Portia. They give you this _HUMONGOUS_ game world, and gameplay is directly tied to the passing of time... shops open, you gotta be in bed by 2AM or you wake up next day with less energy etc... and they give you a STAMINA METER that doesn't last anywhere near as long as it needs to. You can get a mount later on, but that takes a decent amount of cash and a sizable chunk of yard space. It was so disliked that they removed it in the sequel, My Time at Sandrock and made the character sprint by default with no stamina meter, just infinite sprint. In return, they gave you a certain number of dodge rolls that you can do before you need to let them replenish which is way more fair.

It's a part of the combat to manage your stamina and stamina can help define a specific animal more in a unique way. Realistic fall damage also bodes well in dino sims, a t rex ofc can't jump off as high a cliff as a raptor realistically can.

11:20 Fun fact, the weight of gear carried into combat by a modern day infantryman is identical to the weight of gear carried my a Roman infantryman 2000 years ago. The gear may be very different but how much there is in weight is still the same. I wonder how a Roman Legion would react if they encountered a time traveler with a rifle. They see you point this useless looking stick at an enemy 300 yards away. There is a loud bang and the enemy falls down dead.

Limited stock, or seasonal events. That's another one that gets me. I don't always have the time to play games, and when the game has limited time only content, be it items, cosmetics or whatever, that just pisses me off. IRL if I don't have the time to get something, or I'm too busy during ideal seasons to go somewhere, that's on me. But I shouldn't have the same issues in a game just because I couldn't play during a set time period. I've missed out on plenty of holiday events in games, just because I was just too busy to play when they were live.

Same here... LOTS of games are pushing this nowadays,so U will spend more $$$$ than U would otherwise... It's "marketing 101" stuff, like supply/demand & the limited-availability-obsession that's (possibly)stronger-than-ever,among the general populace... That is,in some regard, this is bcuz of the way ppl have /always/ thought about "rarity". And,for the social-types,the "fear-of-missing-out",dynamic that is dependent on egocentric values... Especially,w/ regard to easily-created,arbitrarily-limited things, like DLC/microtransactions & other digital things(not much resource involvement, being non-physical,& all). That, gamers are so accustomed to accepting as "normal". That, the majority(or,close-enough,to a creator)will buy enough of said "thing",as to indicate there's profit to be had. And,in general,as long as there's profit in this behavior,it will continue. Thanks,to the inherent "greed" factor,of ppl... The only way it won't,is if there's no profit. As,companies & financially-dependent individuals are reliant upon profit,ultimately... BTW-I know this is probably all obvious,to any1 here. But,just in case it isn't & can alter the present-course of this gaming "trend" that I SO despise;I'm describing the factors,in-depth... I would actually prefer expansion discs,w/ physical games & perma-downloads for those not, over THIS form of modern-age "scalping". That,is purposefully-defended by it's abusers(I'm referring to the creators,to be clear)... Anyway,I'm from the early days of gaming(the 80's,that is). So,I'm more accustomed to buying a COMPLETE game at retail & it coming w/ EVERYTHING at once. Instead,of it having DLC & other digital-gimmicks,attached to it... Tho,that system does have drawbacks,as "Aliens:Colonial Marines",proves. That is,I'm not aware of any "fixes" that the company responsible for it(Gearbox Software,I suppose),ever offered thru patching/downloads. And,this is supposed to be the "advantage" of this modern way of thinking/doing business... So,what happened there??? Anyway, that's all... -Peace

I don't mind encumbrance. What I do hate is when items don't stack and you have limited item slots. Oh, this needle you just picked up? Yeah, it takes up as much space as your huge, two-handed sword. Oh and that sword you have equipped? Yeah, it still takes up a slot in your inventory.

Yeah, it might be annoying, but the rain still works. It looks nice; it operates like rain should (although killing a roaring campfire would be basically a downpour for a good time, but then we're talking about not only a rain mechanic but gradient rain and well... we aren't there); and lightning from time to time to boot is just... so interesting. Damn, it's just hard to criticize much from BotW.

So many people still too stupid to climb in rain in BotW. I figured it out the first day playing. Yet years later millions upon millions of oblivious players. Ok here's the trick... Jumping up a climb causes you to slide down. Rain causes you to slide down every few moments. However, jumping you slide less than from rain. Didn't you ever notice this? So do you get it yet? Ok, basically every few movements in the rain, hit the jump and you will slide less than the rain will cause. Thus, you can scale anything, even in the rain. Just bring enough stamina. Now, was that so hard? Damn, people so dumb.

#5: The RPGs that have a friendship meter that forces you to party with someone to increase your friendship with them otherwise they get less stats or what-not. They give you, say, a 3 person group but they have you recruiting 6, 7, 8 friends in the game. You're OBVIOUSLY going to have some characters that you like over others and are probably going to favor them. BUT, there are some levels/missions/dungeons/whatever that _require_ the use of certain characters. So, okay, you love going with characters A and B... but wait, this next dungeon requires you to go with Y and Z ... but you never go out with them so their friendship meters are low and their stats suck because of it. So then you gotta force yourself to use those characters to build their stats n stuff up so that the required outing isn't so difficult. Or, like in Mass Effect, achievements that require you to use X character Y number of times.

This may have been mentioned by someone else, but State if Decay had a real problem with how time worked. The issue was that the game ran in real time, whether you were playing or not. You could play for 8 hours go to sleep and wake up to all the characters dead because the game kept "running" while you slept. That made me stop playing immediately. Thankfully they fixed that in the second one.

This is less of a weight max as a carry capacity but the new no mans sky update allows for a LOT more storage capacity. The only trade off is that technology is now restricted to technology slots instead of miscellaneous slots, which have been replaced by cargo. And all of it fits in a small backpack that doubles as a jet pack.

10:12 I think the only reason they added the climbing stuff was to prevent you from climbing up to the first divine beast... because it permanently rains until you beat that part. I honestly think that's the only reason they made climbing it rain difficult lol

I agree with all except the lack of navigation. I for one like feeling lost in my games and can live without a little blip on my screen telling me where to go. In fact I think the ability to make a game without map and objective markers shows that you have good enough level design that player can find things of interest on their own and navigate by landmark which is more fun to me then mindlessly following a marker

#1: Loss of Control in general. The aforementioned Panic mechanic shines a spotlight on something that is very incredibly frustrating in any game: loss of control of your character, or distorted controls. They suck. I don't care what type of justification developers TRY to explain it, it sucks. Full-stop. Whether it's confusion in 2D platformers reversing your controls, or Crowd Control effects in World of Warcraft, it sucks to be unable to move, or watch your character run around in random directions. It just sucks and they just need to stop doing that stupid crap. I hate a deep seated hatred for this crap, especially in MMOs like WoW. I've always said that Fears have no place in PvE and I will die on that hill.

Compared to other gaming-oriented channels like IGN, WatchMojo (kind of) and probably Outside Xbox (the ones I personally know of), Gameranx always seems to have a different vibe about it. They seem enthusiastic about the content they are presenting, avoid from a certain pride tone while talking, and especially display their own feelings in a non-cringe way that doesn't emphasise on humour but rather feels like a talk with a friend.

As soon as you said ‘friends’ I immediately thought GTA 4. It was like ‘can I just play the damn game?’… nope. At least in San Andreas, the dating missions were optional (and the perks for doing so could be pretty cool). In GTA 4 it was like ‘okay, here is this big, important, story-driven, dangerous thing you need to do. Stay focused, it’s about to get real… But first, your cousin and the guy who sold you your car wanna go out! Sooo, drop everything you’re doing and go babysit your ‘friends’ so they stop whining! Add: Subnautica was an amazing game, truly a work of art… buuuut yeah. All that tech and no tracking on the map was frustrating. 😣

Getting hit by an enemy that stops the player from moving in games like Resident Evil Remake and Ratchet and Clank 2016 is annoying. The game does let the player shield attacks, but shielding would be less annoying if shielding was only useful for taking less damage than for taking less damage and getting stopped from moving.

Weight limits, time limits and strict stamina limits are generally very annoying for me. But while not realistic, another way to interpret 'time limits', since you spoke of sitting back and relaxing, is limited events and such. I play many games like mmos, gachas and other 'service games', which can be really fun to play. but the limited time stuff triggers serious FOMO in a lot of people and causes the opposite of relaxation. It sucks. And of course, its on purpose. "Better keep playing our game or you miss out" = more spending opportunities.
