I appreciate these considerations - even if I myself take a different approach - and enjoy your channel. I've been collecting since the early 2000s, was part of the first generation fragcom. The community boomed in the early 2010s, simultaneously with the number of releases each year. In accordance, the price tags for niche and specialty perfumes doubled, even tripled. The big fashion and jewelry houses got in on the game and launched their exclusive lines. It became difficult to parse hype from innovation, everybody wanted a piece of the pie. I own some 350 full bottles - modest, given that I've been collecting for 20 years - and while I seek out 30 ml if available, I buy bottles, never decants. I store them neatly in Chinese bridal cupboard style cabinets on glass shelves and every day, the glorious sight of the collection 'sparks joy,' to quote Kondo. To me the bottle is part of the aesthetic experience and of the ritual of perfuming. I hardly ever get rid of bottles, and never sell anything: it only leads (from observation) to buying more (eventually more of the same). I regard the collection as an entity, which I love, warts and all. It's also an archive. Moreover, a perfume I haven't worn in many years, I may suddenly crave, or appreciate in a new way. As you say, your taste develops - and this never ends, which means that appreciation may come and go and come again. You never step in the same river twice. I do still buy a couple of bottles every year, but much on the market is repetitive and derivative and I'm easily satisfied with what I've got. (Just as an aside: I'm about your age, and Safari was once my signature too, in the 90s 🤩 I still have a bottle ánd a backup!)

Interesting to hear your approach. I really don't want an archive and even though my collection mostly sparks joy, I always feel a little bad about perfumes just standing there not getting used. So I just keep rotating them out of the collection. I think I might go back and revisit a few, but I don't think I will ever get excited about for example Van Cleef & Arpels Ambre Imperiale when I now know there is so much more out there that I find way more interesting. Libre is really nice, both of your versions.

Great video ! I don’t watch most reviewers any more , usually they are just promoting for profit with the same rotation of fragrances and rarely go into detail or they are not descriptive enough / explaining pros and cons or similarities to other fragrances

You made some good points. I just got into this fragrance craze last year and already over bought. Am trying to shift to smaller bottles and also just decants for the ones I may not use much. It seemed more economical to buy larger bottles and to cover the bases, in case of discontinuation and price hikes. But the reality is, when you have more choices, each will get used a lot less. Just do not have enough storage space. Not sure I can even keep them in good condition for decades, despite my best intentions. The climate is warm here, year round. But I also realize - for decants, there's less protection against deterioration and evaporation. . I did try to buy preloved fragrances but there's the issue of buying fakes or items that weren't kept well. Don't know about you, but it is not easy to resell used fragrances or decants here. Even when the bottles are nearly full, people want to pay half price or less. I can't afford to do that, otherwise I would, just to free up the space.

Thank you. Where are you in the world? In Sweden, hyped and popular fragrances sell for a pretty good price on the secondhand market, but as soon as we're talking an unusual or not so much talked about fragrance one should be happy if one gets 50 percent for whatever amount is left in the bottle. I just got ahold of a full (but opened) bottle of Chanel no 5 eau première for about 47 euros including the postage and that is a GREAT deal! And I just managed to sell Guidance and got all my money back since it is hyped and I got a good price to start with about 100 euros under full retail. But other fragrances are almost impossible to sell. I tried selling for example Musc Ambre Gris from Affiniscence and I could have gotten 20 euros for a full bottle maybe, but then it is not worth it to me. I took my ad down when someone wanted to start negotiating with me about the postage when the price was like 20-25 euros.

Let's say Southern Hemisphere :) Wow you got some good deals there :) It's really different here I guess. You have to be willing to drop prices low, else the items won't sell in our local platforms. Perhaps it'd be easier with popular fragrances. But there is not much of a market for vintage or hard to find fragrances. Perhaps on Ebay, you can get a good price, but we can't ship overseas. It'd be easier between members of the frag community. But not for the little guy and beginner like me :) Quite a pickle I've got myself in, not being able to sell things, especially those I blind bought.

Kicki I just wanted to give you a hug when you were talking about the graduation. ❤️ I felt the same about Iris Empire - I was so excited to try it but it didn’t excite me at all. I can recommend the Atelier Materi discovery set, I enjoyed many from the house. They just feel like really good quality when you wear them. The fact that my taste changes so much is why I have anxiety about letting things go- what if I want to come back to it? 😬 I wish I had your ability to disconnect, I definitely could get rid of some from my wardrobe.

My taste doesn't usually change in the direction where I've already been. If I am bored, I am bored. Like I used to have 4 Van. Cleef & Arpels and really loved them all, but they are too un-challenging and I cannot see myself going back to them. I still have Precious Oud, but want to let it go as well. But the ones that I suddenly really dislike and can't wear at all might be ones to revisit later on. But I can get my nose on stuff through friends. Holding on has a price. It bothers me just seeing stuff standing around. Thanks for commenting, really appreciate it.

I so appreciate your channel, and if I lived in your area in Sweden, I no doubt would come to one of your gatherings! I have started to buy second hand bottles, and samples/decants, and I do not miss having full bottles. I get easliy bored with perfumes, so for me it does not make sense to have a full bottle anyway. But I do appreciate the estetic of a nice bottle, and it does not bother me that no one can se it, I know it is there right? Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that this channel is so important, to tell people that there is another way of enjoying perfume than just buying new bottles all the time. My scent of the day is Libre from YSL, I own a second hand bottle of this and Libre Le Parfum, and really enjoy them. I am having a moment with designers right now, maybe because all the billions of niche perfumes that are being released and the blurry line between reviews and perfumepushing that is happening here on YT just pisses me off.

Hi Kicki, Funny you call some of the vintage perfume "old lady", and when I hear that description for any perfume, as a vintage lover/collector I generally feel they are chypres with a lot of moss and I am then sparked to look into them, hahaha! Of course aldehydic white florals also carry that connotation and I am not a huge fan of most of those. Personally the term to me just means old school or vintage as old lady has a negative connotation, but hell, I am old. Interesting to hear your thoughts on Iris Empire. I never thought of it as sweet, but re-smelling now, I totally get that! I went nuts trying to find a FB after I loved a decant and now it's almost too much for me and I think that could be why. I only wore it this winter and not a lot. I have not smelled a lot of the modern niche perfumes so I had no reference for what I was smelling. While Marie Kondo's book was interesting, anyone who says not to keep books makes me sad. I found her too extreme for me. I am not a minimalist in any way and I am fine with that! I also don't think of my perfumes as a dollar investment. I think of them more in line with a consumable that I will enjoy over the years. I do sell some on Mercari but only to recoup a little money that then goes to buy another used bottle on that site. Thanks for your thoughts! oxJulia

Loved your comment and I totally understand that people see their collections differently. As long as one enjoy one's books, perfumes and whatever one is holding on to, of course it is right to keep stuff. But for me, it bothers me to see the perfumes not getting used. I think Marie Kondo is extreme as well, but a few things I have sort of incorporated into my life style. I do the folding of clothes and it gives me a much better overview of what I have. With books I don't go as far as she recommends, but don't hold on to books that I have read very often. I guess I just don't like the idea of ownership. We really never own anything anyway. Sooner or later, I will have to pass this house on to someone else etc. I am still trying the fragrances you sent and so much enjoying having this opportunity! Have found an almost full 50 ml bottle of Ivoire de Balmain and it is on it's way to me now! So excited to have that! Just loved it and so did my daughter. So fresh and green but also has depth. I paid about 50 dollars plus postage and I thought that was a good deal.

@@thehonestperfumereviewer6336 Yes Kicki, it's a balance that's for sure! Funny, your comment about the Kondo method reminded me that I also used her techniques years back to organize all my drawers and they are still like this today. I think many of us have a bit of a "problem" with stuff, me included, so I really appreciate your suggestions either way. I may choose to keep a larger collection than you do but I really have started thinking about this and it translates to the rest of my house and extra unnecessary items I have around. My mother is now cleaning out her house since Dad died and it is stressing her out to no end and that makes me start thinking about it and stressing me out too. In the big picture, it's not my perfumes that are the stressor but the rest of our entire houses "stuff". Raising children, traveling, collecting various things and it accumulates a lifetime of memories and what not. I so admire you for your solid stance and action on this. I wish I could just go though and chuck stuff but I have a very hard time decluttering everything. I will get there hopefully! oxJulia

I enjoy Ramseys channel but do wish he'd have names on screen or time stamps. The one good thing is he does list all fragrances mentioned in the information, so I can usually make an educated guess where to skip to if there's particular ones I'm interested in. Obviously time stamps would be better but his content is good so he gets a pass.
@thehonestperfumereviewer6336

He could improve these things, but I think he is giving priority to put out A LOT of content, because he enjoys this. The technical stuff would be a struggle for him. And that is how I feel too. But yes, I agree! Putting names on the screen and time stamps is very helpful. But in his case, I don't really listen for a review on a certain fragrance, I just listen to hear him talk about whatever he is bringing up. We have different taste, although there is a certain overlap. I love Chypre Palatin, for example and so does he!

I only have 5-7 bottles and the ones i have in 100ml will be repurchased in 30-50ml format. The way i see it, 100ml is only ok for me if I have no more than 3 or it is my signature or it is a 4711 cologne which does not last and i need to spray again.... And with flowery fragrances i only need 30ml bottle or better less, like a big decant 10ml is enough. I tend to be tired of them quite quickly. I personally start to see second hand bottles in Parfumo or decants.
