Number 10 is interesting. I have been talking about my experience and despite pointing out that it was in a clinical setting, ppl still cut ties with me. I find it hysterical that they aren't happy my life has been saved. Nobody had a reaction to taking stuff that doesn't work every day like Zoloft. But ketamine which is not an every day thing is somehow worse even tho it actually works. Should be a skit on SNL...

I love #10 because I learned the hard way the reasons to keep it to myself.,because it worked so well for me and I firsthand had life-saving and therapeutic effects, my medical friends had very strong opinions (they care, thus the litany of lack of evidenced, off-label, liver risks…) and I also wanted so badly to share my experience with others whose loved ones have treatment resistant depression and basically just overstated and it got weird. I learned to agate only if people asked why I am doing better and then I just say “I tried something new” of “experimental/participated in a study.” It actually caused tension between a friend and I - I felt I was really proud of myself for choosing this and she was very skeptical and what I needed was SUPPORT. So that was NOT helpful and hurt our friendship. Just share with your therapist begire you go and shout to the rest of the world. Especially when you ARE in a depressed state or you are fighting for your health- protect yourself emotionally by keeping mum. YOUR feelings about it are the only ones that matter !

I was worried about the judgement as well, but I found 98% of friends and family were fully supportive. I did my treatments for chronic pain not mental health. Sadly ketamine still carried that "reputation" for a lack of better words regardless of what it was treating. Once I educated my loved ones on why I was doing it and what it's efficacy rate was, most of them would say, 'omg I wonder of it'd for for this person or that person." People need to stop with this stigma and judgment. It doesn't help anyone. Especially those who really need help, but might be afraid to seek it.

Even someone who didn't know me who I went to for therapy, so unprofessional and crossing boundaries telling me what to do and jumping to conclusions without listening to me. Some of these medicines can actually be life saving, but because they are not seeing the ugly what could have been they only react from what they've heard and been taught to believe. x

This makes me really sad. I can't understand for the life of me why a _real_ friend would ever treat someone this way over something that helps them medically, and is actually showing results - I mean it almost seems like one thing if nothing changed, but if it was noticeable how much you had improved, and it was really helping you deal with something extremely difficult (depression or pain), I don't see how it's their job to judge you for it, or treat you that way. In fact, a real friend would see this, and regardless of their personal feelings on the substance, look past it at what it is actually doing for you. The last thing you said here was exactly the point...your feelings are the ones here that matter about it...not anyone else's ....and if someone wants to be like that, it's not their business, and tbh, it is like the opposite of "caring". I have similar problems when I tell people about the fact I'm on prescribed pain medication for an extreme amount of physical pain that is so debilitating that I can hardly move... and it's mainly because of the street fentanyl that has been killing people. Not prescribed medication. It doesn't matter to them, because "opioids kill people"... i think a lot of people just want to judge things other people do, even those we are close to, instead of trying to put themselves in our shoes. idk
@Dr.Twat.Waffle

Exactly. Ketamine is actually used in hospital settings, which makes it even sillier that anyone is getting upset. Appreciate the full disclosure. But for most drugs approved for anxiety, depression, or PTSD the side effects are equally substantive. In addition, the percent of patients who experience even nominal relief from antidepressants is never discussed with a patient, much less the side effects or lack of "long-term studies". For patients with treatment resist resistant depression where a patient is only allowed the "approved" pharma treatments it's an endless cycle of being half alive.

Starting from your feet then when it hits your head that’s when you’ll unconscious if you don’t do the breathing technique! Stay away from psych meds !! And do natural herbs or healing . I’m 31 now and believe me when I say this . XANAX ruined my life . They treat us like lab rights . And guess who made Xanax in 1971? Pfizer lol . I want to sue them so bad or whoever allow this time of drug to even be alllowed is ridiculous . Why not ban cigs and alcohol . Instead they banned weed and natural healings like shroom lol . I’m probably going to get kill for this for speaking the truth but yeah . Psych meds is to kill you so the population can decrease . For the past 11 years of my life . All the psychiatrist I saw kept prescribing me medicine because others doesn’t work. Zoloft Prozac mirtzapibe Xanax klonopin is good for tapering down Xanax . @Mr_Tecumseh

One of the reasons insurance probably isn't covering it, is because it's to new of a treatment and there is not enough data available to show its effectiveness. Right now it's an alternative treatment. Insurance isn't going to cover it until there is enough data to prove its effectiveness and becomes a mainstream form of treatment. That may never happen, it may be a decade or two before it does. For people who deal with addiction, you probably won't want to try this and we are still a long way away from mental health stigmas coming to an end if ever.

I spent 5 inpatient days about every 3+ mos at Stanford University med center in Palo Alto CA on ketamine infusion. I suffered from some debilitating pain from some past spinal injuries. Those stays were life saving for me and since the PM Dr's gave me slow but steady update on the ketamine, this procedure was tolerable and not hallucinationagetic. (Unless some Dr got ahead of the protocol and bumped it up too fast.). I did this for several years and it really helped me deal with my lifelong pain caused by a CA Dr that cut nerves. Now I live across the the USA and they don't even know what the ketamine treatment is, and it wasn't used for mental issues. Now I live in H E double toothpicks since the the CDC made all the docs take their chronic pain pts off of ANY pain control. I wonder how many of us want to GIVE UP? I am a medical anomaly b/c I don't get addicted nor have withdrawals from any meds. Try telling a new doc that. I sure wish they had the Stanford Ketamine protocol here in VA.

The ketamine infusions at Stanford made a considerable difference in my ability to handle the pain. I still had the oxicontin and a muscle relaxer but I could take less. The only thing for me was it didn't last long and by the 3mos. wait I was ready to go for another round of the ketamine. As far as the stay at Stanford it was great. They put you in a private room because of the possible hallucinatory affect and also the fact that there are bad ppl out there who would like to steal the drug. I was the only pt that got to wander the halls and down to the awesome patio because I could tolerate the drug well. Just don't let Dr. O get antsy and turn up the dosage too quickly.😉 I guess after a couple yrs of treatment they decided I wasn't cured so they discontinued. I really miss the infusions and stay at Stanford (the food was terrific! ) I would go back in a heartbeat but I now live across the US and Virginia doesn't have that kind of treatment. Now with absolutely no pain meds and allergic to NSAIDS I am in living hell and I have been going days with 0 sleep or 2-3 hrs sleep and the pain is driving me insane. Top it off and I recently fell down the stairs and had 4 broken ribs and 4 compression fractures to thoracic vertebrae. Farm girl, it won't hurt to give Stanford a try. 👍

Wow! This non-cardio doctor knows what POTS is!! I have POTS from Covid but it's not so bad that I would rule out trying ketamine for depression/anxiety. There are different types of POTS and a lot of stimulants actually lower heart rate for people whose POTS is due to super low blood pressure (blood vessels not constricting properly when standing upright). Coffee and modafinil actually lower my heart rate when standing up. But edibles containing THC make my heart race both when lying down and standing up, which wasn't happening to me before POTS/Covid. But it subsides after a few hours and isn't intolerable. Thanks for the info. The main reason I'm wary of trying ketamine is because of the POTS. I had my heart checked out by a cardiologist and everything is structurally sound and my doctor says I can handle the extra cardiac load from exercise or hallucinogens. I'm also young and otherwise healthy, so that helps.

The treatment yielded good results; but, can definitely scare people. It's NOT for everyone. I agree completely. I didn't lose friends but my family definitely doesn't like that I use it for treatment. With MS I've been a lab rat since I started meds; but, as I said, I have nothing to lose. It may be a treatment that could turn bad or good. It's only going to help others with MS in the future. I'm the lab rat; but, I've accepted that fate. I'm doing many things to help does and doesn't help. I've done my own research on how they believe it helps with pain, inflammation, and calms the nerves. The effects are strong so if you're inexperienced or don't like psychoactive (especially psychadelic and disassociative) feelings, then I would recommend you look for other treatment. It's very powerful. So talk with your doctor and read peoples experiences. Know what to expect. It has worked very well for me; so if you can handle it, go ahead and try it out.

being "high" is technically a state of mind. Its easy for me to understand this sort of stubborness to try any sort of mind altering drug since I have had my share of traumatic drug encounters, ego death, etc. so i know the level of fear a drug can have on a mind, and can see as to how some people may feel too overwhelmed due to lack of knowledge before taking the substance. I personally would argue its not a bad thing to think about considering trying again. I mean not just anyone comments on a ketamine video they stumbled across, you were most likely subconsciouly trying ketamine unless you want to think about it negatively. Turning away from drugs because of fear is what can turn someone into a perosn very close minded, living with the constant fear of having any sort of high isn't a wise outlook when you can instead, take what you already know and face that fear so in turn, you come out a more confident version of yourself. Reflecting as to why I didn't enjoy what I was experiencing during my bad encounters with drugs is what gave me the subtle epiphanys that are currently the main guides that are helping me accept my existence and helped me accept that happiness doesn't just get hard wired into humans as our default idle mood. I do respect your feeling towards highs, how they can trigger a bad experience from the past. but its just my train of thought i felt like releasing here so, yeah lol. cheers.

On the other hand I have tried so many drugs mostly for the depression that is much more severe than unipolar depression. I am supposed to get a ketamine iv infusion for pain. I am very nervous about possible hallucinations and potentially becoming schizophrenic as I cannot even smoke Marijuana without freaking out and having what they call a "bad trip " Also I have been diagnosed with a fast heart rate...tachycardia. Should I get the infusion or avoid it? If anyone can help answer my concerns, I would greatly appreciate it. I also have many different health issues...diabetes, neuropathy, thyroid/cholesterol issues, restless leg, arthritis, heart palpitations, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, sleep apnea.
@josephhaefeli9954
3 жыл бұрын
So much of a drug experience involves what is called "set and setting". Set is the mind set you bring to the experience, and setting is the environment itself. That includes marijuana use too. When LSD was only found in lab research environments, bad trips were not a thing. When it got out on the street and used recklessly, that's when the bad trips started. You need to work with a doctor and counselor who you really trust to safely prepare and guide you on your ketamine trip. Having a "sitter" you really trust is very important to feeling good, safe, and secure. Keeping in mind I don't know what I'm talking about, I suspect the dosing of ketamine for chronic pain is less than used for depression therapy. Also, if you do have a bad experience during your infusion, the doc can add a tranquilizer such as Versed to your infusion to calm you. It does sound like the pain, the depression, the panic attacks, the PTSD... I wonder how much these are interrelated? Perhaps ketamine therapy would help you untangle all these things, and with the help of a good counselor too, you could chisel some of this stuff out of your life. Bottom line is you need to talk to a knowledgeable doctor you can trust. If you need to shop around for a doctor you like, do it. It's important. Take care and I hope you find the relief you need.

Wearing a holter monitor right now. She has a CCU cardiac background I have a CVICU cardiac background What we as nurses (and I as a former employee of an animal shelter) know about Ketamine does not jive with the idea of her getting Ketamine infusion therapy for her bone spur (spear) digging into her muscles and affecting her ability to walk, causing spasms, etc I here now gathering info and my red flag precautions of WTF are being confirmed I was just telling her because this type of therapy is something neither of us have EVER heard about it must be new and still in a "research" information gathering phase Minus the depression and PTSD (mental health issues etc) you are proclaiming alot of your issues are similar to my mom's. Another factor for us is that we are black and new medical treatments in their infancy/freshman phases in our opinion, may have adverse effects that weren't perceived during clicical trials on likely White Men and women... For that reason and because we believe her issue is more recurrent trauma from the bone spur and not chronic pain from the likes of fibromyalgia or cancer or osteomyelitis etc, we don't believe that administering black label treatment of what is otherwise a surgical sedative would be beneficial for her and may cause more harm than good YOU also experience depression and mental health ailments however and from what i can find, This Ketamine treatment also targets that. You made no mention of a person who is currently taking opioids for chronic pain and whether or not they must be completely withdrawn off opioids before taking ketamine. I’m on my 10th ketamine session,had 6 sessions and a couple months later I am having 6 more. My anesthesiologist said just don’t take any opioids or benzos 24 hours before infusion, I only take a klonopin for anxiety so I just don’t take it the day before. Ive had cancer 3 times and 38 surgeries since I was 7, I’m 31 now. The infusions help me a lot with dulling down the pain, every session is different and euphoric and helped pull me out of depression. It is also used to help with withdrawal and addictions for those who need it! It doesn’t really affect my heart, maybe if I were to have a really bad session which I haven’t allowed my thoughts to. I have tachycardia and take heart medication (atenolol) , not saying it’s safe for everyone at all. Hope this info helps you or someone with questions.

The worsening of psychotic symptoms in people with psychotic disorders only last a couple of hours after treatment, as most case studies are reporting. In people with TRD with psychotic features, Ketamine is sometimes curing the psychosis. The side effects of antipsychotics, ECT, and treatment non-compliance? Even if I didn't do it intentionally my body was falling apart due to extremely high blood pressure and other issues. Possible organ failure. Docs called it "involuntary suicide", meaning I was subconsciously killing myself even if I consciously had the strength to not do it intentionally. Ketamine infusions were hell for me as it was done with a psychiatrist talking me through prior events. I had to relive what I had been trying to bury. The ketamine was powerful, I could see and even smell what happened. Long story short; it was horrible...but worked. My blood pressure and and anxiety attacks went down.
