My beef isn’t with the individual movies as I think they are executed well. My beef with The Sequel Trilogy is the macro arc or overarching story. What is the point of 7,8,9? How does it tie in with 1-6? All they did was essentially rehash the same rebel vs empire story where a Skywalker falls to the darkside and is redeemed to kill the Emperor. They couldn’t think of anything original?

That's really the bottom of it all. The sequels didn't connect well with the other movies and not with eachother, at least from a storytelling perspective. Of course that's mainly because Johnston wanted a completely different direction than Abrams. They could've (and should've) prevented this, by choosing only one director for all three movies. They should've written all three scripts Back to back from the start, so it makes sense from beginning to the end.

Challenge accepted: 10. Fair enough 9. When you deal with SW, they will have expectations, the problem is that they didn´t even get close to them most of the time. I can enjoy most films even bad ones, but 8 and 9 disappointed even me who likes most movies. 8. Agree mostly, but the Leia vision just looked bad imo. And the "finest combat sequence" is not good because you can clearly see at many points how the guardians could have killed both if they didn´t wait for some reason. I guess somehow they waited 7. Using disneys failure as a reason to not critiicze them is stupid because it was their decision to not properly plan this out. Why is that a reason? Hey, they did something bad, so stop saying that they did smth bad? 6. Fair enough 5. I agree that some choices had potential but a) they had no plan for these choices, b) interesting things were not followed up upon, c) they trashed their own story parts after episode 7 and episode 8, so bold choices do not help due to the general issues. 4. Some of these were awesome, but the guard stuff I already pointed out and the haldo action didnt make any sense. It was ignoring the world for a cool. Why risked hundreds of rebel lives against the death star? Lets just use one large chip hyperspeed through it, etc. 3. Its John Williams, nobody hates John Williams 2. I liked Kylo, but I think some decisions were not ideal, but not enough for me to dislike him. Just that he looks like an Emo One Direction member or a sad Jonas Brother, but that is just personal taste and not fair criticism 1. Agree, some lands. Some. If that is the standard we use, that is rather sad honestly. But I certainly disagree with Luke, because they handled him in a way which completely ruined the character. The guy who believed in the good of Vader, couldnt believe in his nephew who had done nothing wrong yet? Come on

I've never had a problem with Luke's character in Episode 8. I don't know why people expect characters to remain the exact same after 30 YEARS, and pivotal character-altering experiences. Additionally, Luke has always been an impulsive person, even after he completed his training in Return of the Jedi. It's his biggest character flaw, and it wasn't exactly resolved or cured by the end of the OT. Impulsively believing, even for just a second, that he could prevent the next Darth Vader from becoming Darth Vader lines up with that, as does the decision to cut himself off from the Force and the galaxy after it all fell apart. He simply responded to the fallout of one impulsive decision with yet another impulsive decision, a mental feedback loop that should be quite familiar to people who suffer from impulsivity. In Episode 8 (and 9), Luke actually learns the dangers and repercussions of his impulsive actions, as opposed to the OT where everything sort of "works out" in spite of them. I certainly think Luke's primary arc was resolved in the OT, but taking this unresolved aspect of his character and putting it under a microscope with an actual resolution is a great use of his character. Some people may say that Luke should've just been the Yoda to Rey, but what good would that do? His character would've been redundant to the audience, as we already know about the Force from Yoda teaching Luke. What more could Luke offer? So we have to sit through another movie of exposition and waxing metaphysical about the Force, only from Luke this time. It can work in a TV show, because you can devote half an episode out of a 10 episode season to Luke teaching about the Force. It just wouldn't work here, and the idea that the ST is just a remake of the OT would be completely solidified.

A few thoughts: 1) re: the visual effects - The number of DAYTIME shots of ships was extraordinary, and really fun to watch. Rey's first flight on the Falcon was exciting and gave us plenty of opportunity to see our favorite freighter do her thing. 2) re: the nostalgia Easter eggs - I have heard it called cheap, but I don't care. The music where Yoda lifts Luke's X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp (titled "Yoda and the Force" on the OST recording) is one of my favorite pieces JW wrote for the series, and having it return for Luke to offer Rey a working ship to return to the Resistance made me weep in the theatre. It may be an easy heart tug, but I loved it. 3) re: the waste of Lando - After seeing Billy Dee in a couple of appearances to promote his return to the role, I can understand why Lando didn't have a more extensive role. I do not believe he could physically do more than he did. It was delightful to see him, he had a fun entrance, and he got a great moment toward the end of RoS, so I'm giving them that one.

I don't hate the sequels, but some of these "reasons" are actually excuses. The haphazard "making it up on the fly" approach killed the potential here. @AnnArbor05

EXACTLY! There was no "master plan" for the entire trilogy. The whole reason Star Wars has held together so well over time is because there was a master plan that followed the tale of the Chosen One and his impact on many events and narratives throughout the universe and over a great period of time. They literally did not know Rey's bloodline until after filming for Ep 9 had begun. Furthermore, the fact that the sequels don't even mention Anakin's name is so insulting to the core elements of what made Star Wars, Star Wars. Star Wars = Force + (lightsbers + Skywalker bloodline). Just call it something else if you want to go off on a major tangent that barely has a thread of connection to the existing Star Wars saga and have it directed by someone who literally never watched Revenge of the Sith all the way through a single time. Just thinking about that makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth. The future is George Lucas's true Padawan, Dave Filoni.

Rise of Skywalker was sloppy and could have used an extra film to make things make sense/just tell a better story (and it would be called Star Wars X), but I'm glad we didn't get any cheesy, excessive "Good to see you again old buddy" reunion dialogue throughout the trilogy. People love to critique the 'Star Wars' sequel film trilogy for not having been fully planned out, but neither were the other 2 'Star Wars' film trilogies. George Lucas didn't come up with Darth Vader secretly being Anakin Skywalker until he wrote the script for 'Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back' after 'Star Wars - Episode 4: A New Hope' was released, and he didn't come up with Luke and Leia being biological siblings until he wrote the script for 'Star Wars - Episode 6: Return of The Jedi' after 'Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back' was released. It's a shame the sequel trilogy is hated. I don't hate it and I acknowledge it isn't perfect. Maybe George Lucas should have never sold Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise to Disney. I feel sorry for Daisy Ridley. She doesn't deserve to get shat on by fans and haters for playing Rey. I liked Rey and I thought she was an awesome character and it obviously not occurred to anyone that Rey is a natural with a lightsaber despite not having any training and Rey living on the desert planet Jakku was written to mirror the beginnings of Anakin and Luke Skywalker's journeys as both characters lived on the desert planet Tattooine. Rise of Skywalker wasn't great and was let down by the writing. Maybe there are things that could have been done with the sequel trilogy. For what it's worth, I liked Force Awakens and I saw Daisy Ridley having a possible potential to play Lara Croft. The Star Wars saga should have ended with Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith. But, Star Wars is a big cinematic futuristic fantasy universe with a lot more stories to tell.

For Number 9, how about the sequel trilogy meeting some BASIC expectations, like having Luke, Han, and Leia sharing a scene together? Even the third Jurassic World movie got that idea joining the classic franchise characters with the new ones correct. How about an expectation as simple as Luke teaching Rey three lessons in The Last Jedi? No, the deleted scene with that final lesson doesn't count. Rian Johnson chose to remove the scene. Therefore, Rey's third lesson didn't happen. How about the basic expectation if Rose and Finn's side quest to Canto Bite amounting to... ANYTHING!? As for Number 3, he is John Freaking Williams, son! Of course he made an awesome theme song. He was the modern master of movie music. Highlighting the music of John Williams to not hate the sequel trilogy would be like highlighting Dom Toretto's white t-shirts as a reason to not hate The Fast Saga. 😂

John Williams, a master of film music, has made a grand score for these films as he does for all others. To date, Star Wars is the ONLY franchise that makes use of the same composer for the entire franchise. Planet of the Apes (both the original and the new ones) has different composers for each. The Harry Potter films started with John Williams but then went towards other composers. The only other film franchise that has the same composer for all the films is Lord of the Rings (which is 6 films if you include the Hobbit Trilogy) and those came after the original Star Wars. So here, the sequel trilogy marks a uniform in the musical world. In music, when we have different composers for a series, it does not uniform them. Since the music makes or brakes a film, it’s the same thing here.

One thing haters always seem to miss, is that the story of TFA wasn't a retread of ANH, but only the superficial "dressing". I mean, the story is about everyone trying to find Luke Skywalker.

@@officialmonarchmusic Well, Luke tried to murder his father so that's not out of character. Both of Luke's mentors gave up and hid while the Empire wrecked havoc across the galaxy for twenty years. So can you really blame him.for doing the same? There's nothing in the movies that tells us that Han divorced Leia. In fact what was said was, "We both had to deal with it in our own way" which suggests a mutual parting of the ways. Besides, how is Han and Leia breaking up and Han going back to his old job, "out of character". We've never seen them in this kind of scenario before, so no one can say how they'd react.
@officialmonarchmusic

@@lookingforwookiecopilot Right, just because Luke was captured by his very evil and murderous father who tried or threatened to kill him and his friends, and was threatening to turn his sister to the dark side, and who he was currently in a duel with, and then almost killed him in it is very comparable with him trying to murder his innocent nephew who was still a child had done nothing wrong as of yet and was in Luke's own chosen environment. Besides, we don't know if Luke was going to kill his father, he just went for the hand. That is literal character assassination, and his development in ROTJ only reinforces why he would never do such a thing. Neither Obi-Wan nor Yoda ever "gave up", they stayed out of the fight because they knew the most important thing was to keep Luke (and Leia) safe, as they were the very last hope for the Jedi. Luke literally gives up in full, and he isn't protecting anything or awaiting any kind of backup plan. Han totally divorced Leia, if not in technicality, then in spirit. A mutual parting of the ways is what a divorce is, and Leia describes it as him leaving her the minute their son turned. It's out of character for Han to go back to smuggling because of all of the development he has had. JJ Abrams reversed his development and destroyed his character
