I like to straighten once a week as well. I cannot wait two weeks or one whole month to wash my scalp/hair! 😂 My hair still has curls, and I believe heat is not the devil when you use a protectant every time you use it and don't flat iron everyday. 😊♥️

Shanika, the reasons you give for preferring straight hair...esp, less tangles, breakage and less detangling time as well as saving money and easier maintenance makes a lot of sense. Love your beautiful hair!!! Living in the South with the heat and humidity I can't quite work toward that goal at this time, however I am looking to do this in the future. Did you wear your hair straight during the majority of your 12 years of being natural?
@shanikacorb

Heyyy. Thank you. 😊 the heat is ruining all my straight hair fun. From the time I went natural, I have been straightening my hair half the time and the other half I would blow dry and then put it up in a bun or 2 Dutch braids or the single braids. It's always been hard for me to leave the heat behind. So I just try to find some kind of balance and keep up with regular trims. But it is getting too hot lately I don't even want to use the blow dryer. 🤣 makes the house even hotter.

Mine was half of your length almost then i jumped on the curly natural band wagon until i seen no growth and spent hundreds on hair products i never used and ended up throwing it all away. I was a straight natural from 2007 thru 2019 then i jumped on that band wagon. Now since i went back to my straight hair my hair have been saying "Thank You but you knew better than that" 🤣 🤣. Heyyy. Thank you girl. I appreciate it. I straighten mainly in the fall and winter months. Either once a week or once every 2 weeks. And yessssss. My hair knows when it's feeling healthy and strong enough to handle being straightened. And I just listen to my gut feelings if I'm on the mood to keep it in a protective Style. Now I'm trying to find a good balance since my hair is soo long. As much as I love summer, I do miss being able to keep it straight and sleek without it reverting from the humidity.

@shanikacorb
Жыл бұрын
@TP once a month is for sure a good time frame. Especially if you are using it slow and taking your time with the application of heat. Whether its a dryer or a straightener. Always take your time. If will find over time what your strands can handle. The back portion of my hair can handle heat no problem. But the front is more fragile. It's been like that for over a decade. So I do less heat or few passes or quicker passes to avoid damage.

Surprisingly my hair is super dry so in the cooler moths it's fine. It's more of tan issue in the summer and when its humid. I haven't tried a dry shampoo before. I try to do more buns and braids in the summer so that I don't notice if it's getting oily and I use a spray bottle of water around my edges and roots when protective styling as well to freshen up and hydrate the hair.

What is your hair texture before straightening? Has the texture changed over time from the heat?
@shanikacorb
2 жыл бұрын
Hello. I would say it's a 3bc or 4a. It's a looser curl / wave. Different textures all over my head. It was a limp wave when I was relaxing my hair and then as a I transitioned, the curls became tighter. My hair is dense and thick but no very coarse. I think the heat has only slightly loosened up the texture but not much. 🥰

Yassss omg I love this question. It genuinely retains almost all the length when I have it straight. Very little tangles and breakage and stays alot softer and feels stronger. When its in a more natural state it's a lot more fragile I find. And I see alot more shedding and I hear the strands snap and pop when trying to detangle.

Butt if I keep my hair out when straightened, one or two big braids at night with some oil or serum smoothes the frizzes away nicely.
