it can be afforable, my whole 126 record collection and technics qx200, 6 stack technics seperates akai speakers and gemini amp that i use as a channels cost me under £200 or $300 for everything. The trick is to not rush out to buy mainstream music and dive the bargains for gems, depends on your music tatse though. Im Into Dance and Reggae so records can be inexpensive (normally get 12 for £20) but if you are into rock or soul it gets expensive i have seen.

Also, don't feel bad if your vinyl collection isn't enormous or doesn't have many popular titles in it. It's yours. Fill it with what YOU like, this is no place to try to impress anybody. For example, I have in my collection Megadeth, Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Wham!, Dead Kennedys, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bee Gees, etc... stuff I know I like. Also, don't let vinyl elitists or hipster douchebags discourage you from pursuing this hobby; it's fun, rewarding, and you may meet or connect with other cool people you may not have otherwise!

You should consider a table from U-Turn Audio, who have reasonably priced tables that are worth buying or, maybe you can find a used table that's in good shape. WHERE you keep your vinyl collection is very important - I had a buddy with a large collection of vinyl. One day his GF decided to rearrange the room, and she had placed the vinyl collection against the baseboard heater. Ran me maybe 100€ in total, including that I got the entire turntable serviced and rewired by a specialized company (you should do that after roughly 65 years). In total, that combo blows away my dad's multiple thousand € setup with a Thorens turntable, Technics speakers etc. You can have a very good listening experience for a few bucks. If you don't have too much money, just save a little bit and rather spend it on stuff that has a great lifespan and quality, so you will spend less in the long run. The reason why you NEVER touch the grooves is the fact that, no matter how clean you think your hands are, there is always a certain amount of oil from your fingers that transfers to the vinyl. That, in turn, builds up in the grooves and also attracts needle killing dust and grime. Over a period of time that oil, coupled with the dirt and grime build up, will start deteriorating the vinyl and that becomes a lot of the pops and snaps you hear.

A good tip for discovering new music: research record labels. Back in the 50's & 60's, there were many independent record labels that specialized in specific genres. For example, some of the prominent labels in R&B were Stax, Chess, Aladdin, Peacock and Vee Jay. Some more modern labels I like to keep my eye out for are Third Man Records, Sub Pop and Daptone. Also, give some small & regional labels a try. There were many artist who never got a big break and a contract with a major record label like Elvis did. In some cases, you might stumble across a highly collectible record.

Many of my records are from the 1950s & 60s . I have found that some early 45s ( 1948 - 53 ) need to be played with a stylus with a larger radius. This is especially so for early SUN LABEL BLUES 45s . I know that your videos are aimed at new collectors but hope that some older people find this useful.

Nope. Replacing those cheap paper sleeves is really important. You don't have to get the expensive ones shown in the video. Just get the white paper sleeves with "milky" plastic inside. If you buy 100 or 200 at once they are not that expensive. You can just slide the record out of them without damaging it. Those normal paper sleeves often stick to the record or leave small pieces of paper on the record. They leave scratches if you are trying to get the vinyl out.

A lot of older records used paper but switched to plastic around the 90s. Paper may cause a bit more dust but isn't likely to hurt the record itself. The bigger problem is when people put the sleeves in sideways so the records can come right out, but that allows dust to get in and increases the chances of the records falling out.

Not explaining to my wife that the best turntables are sold separately from the cartridge, the tone arm and the phono pre-amp. I worked in a high-end audio for years so it was no surprise to me, but for my wife who has used to the cheap plastic tables sold in mass market stores she felt that we were being needlessly up sold on stuff that should already have come with the turntable. She didn’t realize that there were companies out there that only manufactured cartridges or just the turntables themselves and some that specialize in manufacturing only phono preamp‘s. Most people have no idea what’s out there and do these people turntable over $200 let alone 2000 or $20,000 is obscene to these folks because they have never seen nor heard them. To be quite honest before I heard a good high-end turntable I felt the same way! But hearing is believing! Great video by the way!

Just random... but I had actually picked up a vintage ‘all-in-one’ just to play 78s when I first started (way back). They definitely worked for that genre and gave the music ‘that’ vibe upon playback. I originally jumped straight into spinning Jungle/DnB, and it was common to just mash the counterweight all the way forward when playing out, but that was probably out of necessity due to bass bumping or floors moving! Fortunately my SL-1200s were studio decks, so now 1 of the 2 is in use just for playback/sampling duties. I just need to pickup a more balanced cartridge instead of using a Shure M44-7 for all genres. Pass the vinyls please 😅

Ramos EC, I am assuming (very dangerous thing to do) that the SL-1200's were the Technics brand? Those are not bad turntables at all if they are set up correctly. I actually use a Technics SL-D1 which is rated as an "entry level" turntable but I love it as it's quiet, steady and reliable. I have a Shure 44-7 in my collection and it's a workhorse of a cartridge. It is still quite popular even today even though Shure stopped manufacturing cartridges decades ago. I use mine for records that may not be as pristine as I would like. With an elliptical needle it covers a lot of sins. I recently "discovered" the Vestax brand cartridge from Japan. They are hard to find needles for but I really like the sound quality. The bottom line is, as I've said elsewhere, is to buy what sounds right for YOU and to heck with what everybody else says.

T W i 100% agree. infact when i first heard the album those 2 were my favorite tracks. I instantly fell in love with Harriet Wheelers beautiful voice, so when i found Reading, writing and arithmetic at my local vinyl store in 1992, i couldn´t believe and didn´t realize my luck. It´s Very pricy on ebay now(not that that matters to me). Harriet Wheeler is my 2nd favorite singer ! Jarrett Seriously ought to give it a listen !!!

I have a suitcase style one. I like that its a speaker as well. I can use it when my good JBL dies. I bring it to work with me so I can play my vinyl at work. I don't think I could carry a proper record player back and forth. The sound quality isn't as good as my cds and it isn't as loud as my speaker, but I love that thing regardless. It actually started messing up just recently. The needle would skate across the vinyl really fast and wouldn't stay in place and play properly. I was looking at it and I see the needle has completely disappeared, so I bought a pack of 4 and they should be here in a couple of days.

Since teachers also need to learn: - Cartridge compliance (yours is a mismatch, your arm has too high an effective mass for a 2M, which is a mid-high compliant cartridge) - Mat materials (you really don't want cork on a direct drive, try leather or, and that's what I'd recommend for this player, a tonar perspex mat) - Quartz Lock on affordable players (turn it off, give it a listen. You might be impressed what happens if your record player isn't deadening all resonances by creating its own resonance continuously trying to keep the platter running at EXACTLY the right speed) - Direct Drive. Though I 'm the proud owner of an EMT 938 which has both a DD mechanism and Quartz lock, there's only a handful of direct drives outperforming belt drives. There's a reason most high end record players have a belt or an idler wheel. Affordable direct drives with a light platter (non mass-platter) and a stiff chassis (no sprung subchassis) are the 'worst' option. There's still better or worse, but it's not really something you want to go for. If I may recommend something; Find yourself a Pioneer PL-112D, match it with an AudioTechnica AT-VM95ML and do the comparison yourself. If you don't want to spend too much, go for the AT-VM95E instead. Up that game of yours, there's still a lot to learn :).

I asked for a record player for christmas expecting a simple suitcase or vintage style all in one player. My mom instead did a bunch of research, found good sales, and bought me an Audio-Technica AT-LP60x. We then had to buy speakers since she didn't know it didn't have built in speakers. I found the Edifer studio series R1280T speakers on sale. I now accidentally have a nice starter turntable setup all because I wanted to listen to one single record my friend bought me. I'm sure not complaining then

#3 is me. I was an audiophile (headphones), for 1 entire year my ATH-LP120 (built-in phono) went straight to my headphone amp then out to my headphones, while saving up money to upgrade to a full desktop set-up. Even then, i went with the Audioengine A5+ self-powered speakers, so my set-up remains affordable: LP120 > A5+. Have been using this set-up for 4 yrs and counting. Also have another functioning CD player plugged in to the A5+ (dual inputs).

ive been looking into record collecting for a while i just recently started getting stuff for good a collection, and these arent really bad mistakes! crosleys and others like them wont damage your vinyl... honestly some of these solutions aren't necessary, the most important thing (imo) is cleaning the vinyl, new sleeves and stacking them correctly... besides that, these aren't really necessary and some just arent true. if you cant afford any of this stuff, thats okay! as long as you have a functional player and a cleaner youre good for a while. but i would recommend getting a better player when youre ready, it improves the experience.

My biggest mistake was buying cheap PVC outer sleeves. Some records started to look cloudy, with weird whiteish stains on them. Even inside the MoFi inner sleeves. It wasn't until then that I learned that the PVC sleeves, combined with other factors like environmental humidity, exude some type of gas that in the long run can totally destroy the records. I threw all the sleeves away, cleaned all my records and switched to polypropylene outer sleeves. It never happened again :D

Rules I knew when I was an 8 year-old boy and was playing my music back in the early 80's. 8. If you touched the tracks with your greasy fingers, you would have to go to mistake 6. 6. Cleaning the record. I would even clean it with hand soap if it became scratched. There use to be some fabric cleaners you used to clean the LP when it was rotating, but those were only for dust not grease. 2.5 Do not stack them. Also: - Do not leave them in the car when it's hot. They melt. - Do not drop them. They break. - Do not use them as frisbees. They break and your parents will not buy you another one. - Do not remove the plastic they come with inside the envelope (are you telling me they do not have the plastic protectors anymore?). - Record them on tape as soon as you get them so that you can listen to them in the car, with your walkman and make mixes (and lend them to your friends, so that if you don't get it back you can make another copy). I remember when one of my dad's friends bought a CD player. He told my dad: "here, take a look" and dropped the CD as my dad was about to grab it. Everybody was scared. That was a big no-no with LPs. He just laughed and said he had done it on purpose, that CDs were a lot stronger. My dad did not wan to buy a CD Player because he had dozens (maybe hundreds) of LPs. I used my first salary at 17 to buy one CD player. He then made the switch and bought a carousel CD player. It is amazing those things were forgotten to the point of requiring a video, but then again, it is like the instructions on how to change a wooden wheel instead of a tire.

HELP ME PLEASE I bought two brand new Billie Eilish records. They both skip. One only skips one one of the songs, but the other one skips on all of them. Every. Single. Song. How do I fix this? I know that in one of your videos you said to use a toothpick, but it skips at least five times per song, so would I need to do this with every single groove? PS-Only my Billie records do this. None of the other ones I have. PPS-I tried using a microfiber cloth to clean it but it doesn't do anything. *please please please like so he can see this (I'm desperate).*

One of these things I still do to this day is collect a "playlist" for the night, meaning the ones I'm gonna be listening to before I go to sleep. So it means I stack like three or four LP's on top of the player because its right next to my bed conveniently. They're there for a few hours anyway so I don't consider that the same thing as stacking a shitload of them. Otherwise my vinylS (haha, I just had to) are in on shelves or in boxes.

The biggest mistake I think too many people make is buying specific records because it's something everyone collects. Buy what you like and don't worry about what other people are buying. These take up a lot of space on your shelf, so don't waste that space with stuff you'll never spin.

Exactly that. I know people that bought MJ just because everyone has but never listen to them. I bought a Napalm Death record without even listening to them up until then. But I like Metal and Deathcore, so I though: "Why not?" was a better investment than buying Michael Jackson. BUT I got my hands on the red and the blue Beatles, which make me very proud and happy, because I love these records.
