It is perfect timing. I am at the stage of gardening of plant and forget. These shrubs are perfect. I am pitching some the perennials to make room. Besides with so many tree roots, these smaller sizes are easier to plant.

It's taken a long time to just get our lawn healthy. I have learned so much from your videos. This year I finally was brave enough to plant containers. With all your videos, I had beautiful, showy container flowers. They turned out beautifully! Thank you! I wish I could have you help us design our landscape. I really need to learn how to set up drip irrigation like you have set up. Love your videos and advice! And love watching your little family grow! You guys are amazing!

Great list Laura! Deer thoughts (East End LI, NY, zone 7A): from my garden 🪴 aka deer buffet 😭 deer looooove the tater tot arbs, yet ignore the Firelight Tidbits for my more yummy big leaf hydrangeas. Panicle hydrangeas for the win!! My tiny wine Ninebarks are thriving and ignored by deer, and we’ve had so many monarchs on our buddleia this year! Deer not interested in it at all. We are going to plant a hedge of the Winecraft Black Smokebush next year to replace some Japanese cedars that the deer munched to death this past Winter. And a taller privacy hedge of Royal Purple smokebush too!! Thank you for all the great inspiration Laura!!

I love Laura’s lists of plants, because it helps me focus on one particular consideration, which is so much easier for my overloaded mind. Hi Laura! Thanks for this amazing list! I LOVE the Ninebark that you talked about, but I'm in zone 8. I know that you have talked about being able to blur the lines of the zones sometimes. What factors do you use when deciding to plant outside of your zone? Might you have another recommendation for a plant with beautiful red foliage that might suit my zone better? Full sun here in Texas 😎.
@HappyCats17
3 жыл бұрын
My gardening experience ( Los Angels, Arkansas, Georgia) has taught me that pushing the zone is easier with cold than heat. You can protect a plant from cold to an extent with mulch, or even dig it up and keep it in the garage over winter, but you can seldom keep brutal heat from killing a plant eventually. Crape myrtles come with dark foliage, some perennial hibiscus have dark foliage, lorepetalum and photinias ( spelliing is probably wrong!) might work for you.
@HappyCats17

Easier to blur the lines with cold than heat. Very few things want full sun in Texas, ha! Some crape myrtles have dark (albeit not red) foliage, some barberries might work for you, photinias and lorapetalums could be good, too.

I love these informative type videos…thank you Laura! The Wabi Sabi looks so pretty , and something that I would like to try. The Tator Tot as well, but I have deer problems and I’m not sure if that sweet little shrub would be candy to them. I know I’ve asked this before, but what ever happened to your Lil Ditty viburnum? I bought 2 afresh seeing a video you did several years back, but mine have not flowered and they have been in the ground 2 years now. 😩

Can all of these be planted now, or is it better to wait until early Spring?

Can we prune rose of Sharon to keep it smaller? I have the double chiffon but don’t want it to get more than 4ft tall.

I so enjoyed this video and fell in love with so many of the plants you shared. However, I live in Southern California and not in a zone which can support these plants. Do happen to know of a Southern California gardener who does the same kind of garden design as you, not just vegetable gardens? Basically I’m looking for YOU in California. 😉

have any full sun to full shade recommendation for zone 4? I'm thinking of replacing the shrubs at the end of my driveway. The main issue it that when the tree in my front yard had full leaves, it's 100% shade. In the spring/winter/fall it 100% sun. I've lived here for about 4 years now, in that short time the bushes in the front yard have gone from getting sun in the summer to absolutely none. Now the bushes are dead lol. I rent but they have given us permission to replace them.

My grandma used to prune the forsythia every day to bust our butts , she would say I’m gonna go prune that bush and we would cut the crap😂 they make good switches

Great information and I’m taking notes but can you tell me if the tater tot arborvitae which is zoned up to 7 will do OK in a zone 9B? I always forget how that works are you allowed to go up in zone but you can’t go down or something like that I get confused.

It's usually cold hardiness, and you will probably be okay in zone 9 with arbs. But some things like lilacs and peonies need the cold to bloom properly, so you wouldn't be able to grow them well in your zone.
