You've got some brilliant photos here in your portfolio, i agree with your critic, be your worst critic and learn to see the moment, like when you ask a group to say cheese, it's the moment after you take the shot, when everyone relaxes, that's the picture capturing real expressions. I had a drunk guy with a bottle of buckfast in his hand shouting something about not taking his picture recently but that's Scotland for you. ! I like to try video the local funfair but you can't just photograph people's children without asking permission first plus I'm only using a Samsung phone so will never achieve the same quality as a proper 35mm camera but it is the least conspicuous way of taking pictures I think. Paul (yes I'm Paul aswell). Great video 👍

Agreed mate it’s pretty easy to take photos of folk outdoors but harder to capture a meaningful moment but so rewarding when it happens. Funfairs are great places to shoot working in newspapers I have to shoot kids all the time but always have to get names and permission these days it was easier in the past but times change. Nowt wrong with phone cameras for street photographers the quality is more that good enough unless you want a big print but no one prints big now it’s all about online posting and phones don’t mark you out as a threat cause everyone has them appreciate you watching Paul cheers

Good one Paul, I have never tried street photography but was confronted by a lady in rural Meannee after the floods and she was asking what I was doing, she thought I may had been casing houses to rob. Her timid husband was in the passengers seat videoing me and not uttering a word, I was polite and calmly diffused the situation by explaining what I was doing, showed her the photo’s and it all ended well.

Spot on mate folk are nervous and suspicious sometimes especially after that cyclone but you did the right thing stay calm explain show them what you’re doing and why I found wearing a high vis worked as well. Try street mate it’s fun readily available and pretty easy to do thanks for taking a look mate

Great vid buddy. Although not my scene, I photograph to unwind and street photography, well people photography is too much hassle round here, it’s like they are all up to sumat with a big attitude. I do enjoy urban landscape though, just making sure there’s not many folk in the way, if there’s people in it, it’s got to be special. The only time I intentionally shoot people these days is if I’m covering an event for the magazine. Sad really, especially when you look back at some of the iconic shots from over the years.

So true mate gotta weigh up the situation before getting the gear out the web has spoiled it so many shite posters slagging others off so everyone is suspicious now. Events are the way to go

Thanks for checking in here’s one more tip I completely forgot about it’s one I use often without thinking basically you see a subject you take the shot but keep your eye to the camera looking in their direction long after they’ve passed never make eye contact with them that’s a five away. they’ll think you were shooting something behind them and think they just photo bombed your masterpiece try it it works

Great Video Paul, I admire your humble approach to street photography considering it is effectively your day job for the Newspaper! Street photography is something i struggle with because it involves people and I hate conflict, once again great video, fantastic advice, thanks for sharing

Cheers mate I was just saying on another channel I love all forms of photography but documentary street is what gets me fizzing it’s often scary and intimidating at first but once you get going and realise you’re doing nothing wrong it’s fun and more than that it’s vital it’s recording today for people in the future look back during your own life the images you remember from way back are the important ones people and places change so fast. Conflict really doesn’t happen often at all it’s more in our heads than in reality the best way to give it a go is at organised events like I say everyone is out with cameras so you just blend in and look for moments to shoot. Thanks for watching mate

Great tips there Paul. I've seen photos of homeless people proudly share in photo groups. A lot of people don't get it at all and even become defensive when I try and suggest they not do it! Business cards are great especially living in China where they cost next to nothing to print a huge stack which I can hand out to people so they can view my photos (and my KZitem channel) as well as of course, reducing any suspicions they might have about your intentions.

Agreed mate I guess the temptation is always there as they’re an easy target I’ve seen some where the photographer has had a chat with rough sleepers and got their permission to take shots to highlight their plight I’ve done that a the paper a few times for certain jobs but always with their input and permission yeah business cards are a winner I reckon mate
