I went to college in Charlotte. They welcome outsiders. I met a family at a bar and they invited me into their home for Thanksgiving "dinner" (it was delicious) and Nascar. Personally, I found the racing boring, but that's fine because I was too busy being flabbergasted by the hospitality. It's an amazing state that I couldn't recommend more highly. I lived in Charlotte for four years in the mid 80's. The population had doubled in the prior 10 yrs & I've heard it has again since. Attributable to competition with Atlanta to replace it has the import/export hub midway between Florida and NY. Caused a huge problem especially with water lines being unable to expand quick enough for the sudden growth. It's also a major drug trafficking hub between Florida & NY, with traffickers meeting there switching loads from Florida license plates to NY license plates... I loved living there & only left to come back to my home State to care for a close relative in dire medical condition. I got to go into hundreds of homes while there as a residential window cleaner, so I had a huge sampling of the people. And let me tell you they are some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Southern charm is very real. The last thing you wanna do is try to hurry anyone there. They take it slow & extremely graceful. They taught me how to be a better person. NC truly is God's country.

The main reason the NC is welcoming to transplants is because so many are transplants themselves. This has been going on since at least the '80s which was the first time I moved there. There are a few downsides that come with that people should be aware of. NC does not handle population growth well. Horizontal suburban sprawl runs rampant with little planning. One day you will see a forest, the next it's all bulldozed down. Come back in six months and there a development there. The other problem that comes with it is that NC won't drop a dime on infrastructure until it's way overdue. Growth outstripping the roads, water supply, and water treatment is common. There's a lot to like about NC. Just realize that growth problems will continue and the NC you move to will not the the NC you live in five years down the line.

I was born in North Carolina and I have lived here all of my life. If you are going outside to enjoy nature be prepared to defend yourself from poisonous snakes, Bobcats, mountain lions, bears and some people who do not value human life such as gang members we have plenty of gangs especially in the Durham Region. We also have our share of robbers and murders. When I was growing up you could leave your doors unlocked and children could roam their neighborhood. This is no longer the case. Protect and supervise your children if you love them and make sure you lock up your house and if you can afford it use flood lights and cameras for your defense have your self a gun, large fillet knife or baseball bat that you can get your hands on easily. North Carolina has become like other states in the USA the crime rates have drastically risen. We now have great white sharks on our coast that are not afraid to come into 3 feet or less of ocean. Just be careful of where you go and what you do. North Carolina is nice. But the people are not what they used to be the southern charm has ended with my generation. Have a nice day bye now.

I took my first trip to North Carolina last year in May and was very pleasantly surprised. Caveat…I was visiting my youngest son and his family in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks, so I haven’t seen much of the state. But what I have seen was really nice and the weather was awesome! Not too cool, not too hot, and the humidity was very reasonable. I was so impressed that I convinced my other kids and their families to meet up there this year in early May for a family vacation. We rented a big house a block off the Atlantic Ocean beach in Nags Head. Well, we struck out with the weather this year…we spent our 5-day stay indoors with a world class Nor’easter blowing outside, houses just down the coast being washed into the ocean, etc. But the silver lining was we were very comfortable in the rental, we had good food and drinks, and we got in some real quality time together. Everyone agreed it was a good time and they’d be willing to give the place another chance.

Dang that sucks to hear that. But if you revisit NC again, I definitely HIGHLY recommend you go see the Blue Ridge Parkway! The NC portion, particularly the stretch between Blowing Rock/Boone, NC & Asheville, NC, as well as the stretch between Asheville, NC & Cherokee, NC, has some of the absolute BEST scenery you will ever see! The mountains are gorgeous! Probably the prettiest the Appalachians has to offer. And there are so many awesome overlooks along the parkway. So basically the entire Blue Ridge Parkway in NC, minus the area immediately around Asheville & the part north of Boone, NC, has the best scenery. I'd recommend stopping in Asheville for lunch because you have a lot of great dining options there & it's about the halfway point down the parkway anyway. The parkway also has many lovely trails, overlooks, & waterfalls to see, too. I'd highly recommend the Cascades Trail at E.B. Jeffress Park, the Rough Ridge Lookout at Grandfather Mountain (as well as the infamous Grandfather bridge), Beacon Heights Overlook trail, Linville Falls park (it's about a mile or so off the parkway), Chestoa View parking area & viewpoint, Craggy Gardens & Pinnacle trails, Looking Glass Falls in Brevard, NC (the actual falls is about 15 min. off the parkway), & the Second Falls on the Graveyard Fields Loop trail, as the top places to stop to sight-see along the parkway if you don't want super strenuous, long hikes.

I grew up in Cary in the early 60's when the town was so small that almost everyone's name fit on a community birthday calendar, lol! There was one elementary school, one junior high, and one high school. Believe it or not, Morrisville was a rural farming community! My dad's company was one of the first to relocate to the RTP (from Decatur, Alabama). The state's ad slogan then was 'Variety Vacationland' for obvious reasons! Cary was a fabulous place to grow up! I don't recognize much of it now, but it appears to have aged very well!

You touched on it a bit - but you have great access to all kinds of incredible geological wonders. The Appalachians are the oldest range on the plant. Then you can drive 6 hours and end up on one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see. The passive continental plains creates some incredible sights, and if you look hard enough, you can find perfectly smoothed metamorphic stones on the beaches. Not to mention the OBX may be gone in 50 years, so you better come visit while it's still here.

I’ve been in Greensboro (Center of state, 3rd largest city) 21 years, can confirm- Fayetteville sucks. No one goes there unless they’re military. Public transportation here is almost non-existent but that’s because everything is spread out. Hurricane season is one month long, inland we get a lot of rain and some tornadoes but they can be easily avoided. If you’re used to west coast beaches (like it was) you’ll find NC beaches lackluster and flat. We used to get about three good snows every winter in February and March but for several years we hardly get anything, maybe one mediocre snow in Feb, so winters are very mild. There are a lot of transplants here and no one cares. Unless you’re rude. Don’t come to NC and be a prickly butt, if you’re gonna move here you need to learn to be nice and say hello in passing. We have tons of businesses moving to the area. Here in Greensboro, Boom Supersonic is expanding, along with Toyota building a battery plant. Google and Apple will have hubs in The Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) Lastly - NC is BEAUTIFUL! It is luscious with evergreens, and in the fall, all the trees turn burgundy, golden, and burnt orange… something out of a hallmark movie. Edit: 21 years

it really depends where you live. Lots of people from new york city moved to the durham area. That's an issue. Lots of these tiny towns have issues with drugs or crime, but generally they avoid normal people, because lots of people have lots of guns.
@apexron8430

We moved to North Carolina in ‘91 and your video is the best I have seen about NC. Perhaps a little to much focus on Fayetteville crime though. One thing of note is that when you move here from out of state and watch the local news you may believe that there is a lot of crime in your neighborhood but when you look at a map the towns where these crimes are occurring are like 25+ miles from your location. Public transportation - Yes, the metro area has buses but few ride them. Why? Over the past decades companies have taken advantage of relatively cheap property and built here and there over the countryside, not in business or industrial parks. Housing is the same way, a development here and there. Consequently, taking public transportation to work means taking multiple buses translating to hours of commute time. Additionally, bus routes are not straight lines like the Madison Ave bus because streets are shorter in length and typically take winding routes. There are no bus routes that just go north and south. Local governments are talking about light rail but it has been shot down every time they try to fund because they can’t predict sufficient ridership. Thus vehicles are the answer.

Thanks for the video, it got me even more excited and unfortunately a little worried. I'm moving to Charlotte from the UK. The first city to live in the States so that's gonna be an adventure. I love what you said about it. I'd rather burn in the heat than freeze in cold. I hate winter and winters are mild in NC. In the video, I can see nature all over. Literally, neighbourhoods are populated by trees all over and that's great. There is also a significant population of vegans from my research. I live just across the border in South Carolina. North Carolina is, in my opinion, the most beautiful of the two Carolinas. Brevard NC is a unique college town and Mt. Airy NC is a quaint little town near the Virginia border and was the inspiration for TV's "Mayberry". The Biltmore House in Asheville NC is nice. And you'll recognize Wilmington NC from the TV and movies. Think "Matlock", "One Tree Hill" and "Dawson's Creek" all were filmed in and around Wilmington NC. I lived in NC for a few years, and it is a decent place to live. But this was a number of years ago when real estate was still very reasonably priced. Now I think it's too expensive for what you get, and wouldn't be a top choice anymore, but it's not as hot as other southern states in the summer.

Unfortunately, real estates & overall costs are getting ridiculously high everywhere you go. The only places where it's cheap anymore are in places no one wants to live, like the rural boonies of Alabama, Mississippi, & inner Louisiana. And no one wants to live there for a reason. The reason costs go up is because a bunch of people move to the area, & that generally indicates that it's popular place people want to live. That's just the way it works.

When it snows even an inch... expect an epic meltdown on the highways... no one seems to be able to maneuver without wrecking.
