One addition. At red lights, I always look at the drivers around me to see who is paying attention and who is, most likely, posing the biggest threat. It's not 100%, but I have been able to avoid potential accidents.

I usually make a 'phone' gesture with my hand next to my helmet and then shake my head if I see a driver using their phone (not handsfree, I mean); some flip me off, some shrug and smile, most just ignore me. And often I give a thumbs-up if I see a guy in a very nice car... or a pretty female driver. (I noticed it's better not to give too much attention to a female passenger though, usually the driver doesn't like it)

Sometimes I get a car at a light into my lane because the sensors that trigger me to get a green don't read a bike. So if the traffic is light I could sit for pretty much eternity. Takes a car to switch the light. And once I took my stock exhaust off for a louder one I had a fraction of near-death experiences from idiots who won't look up from their precious cellphones at the road. But a blip of the throttle gets their attention fast.

one major extra thing: the sheer mass/volume of a bike is much smaller than a car... if you're in a car, oncoming cars (or SUVs, trucks, etc) are a huge 'brick' of oncoming traffic... 6ft wide with headlights on the sides, 6ft high... but an oncoming biker is very narrow, one headlight (or appearing that way)... so it's much less noticeable; also, most people think bikers are speeding even if they're going exactly as fast as the cars, because of the perception of something 'small' going 'fast'. (that being said, quite a few bikers are utter morons or speed demons who they they're 'Ghost Rider' (from Sweden, not the flaming skull one) or Marquez on the road) ; and indeed... any cheap 600cc bike at one quarter throttle will appear to be rocketing away from most 'daily driver' or 'soccer mom' cars: going over the speed limit is illegal, accelerating a wee bit faster than the average car isn't... (unless the bike is doing burn-outs or brutal wheelies at the stop light, but those are often back in the 'hooligan' category)

Eye contact is useless as cagers can seem to look right through you. I prefer to look at where their wheels are pointed. They can’t hit you if wheels aren’t in your direction...which brings me to a thing I hate. People that have their wheel cranked while waiting to turn left. Even if they stay put, they can be rear ended and shot right into you.

toysareforboys "Loud pipes saves lives" is bullshit. We all must ride like we are invisible. Be alert, prudent, and ride within the limits of your skills, and within the current physical limits of your bike. And when filtering, don't go faster, then your stopping distance. If filtering through stopped & tight traffic, creep through, at a speed you can easily & quickly reach 0 from. When filtering through close, moving traffic, go at that same creep speed, relative to traffic. For example. If your creep speed is 10kph, with stopped traffic, on dry, warm, clear roads. Then if traffic is going 30kph, you filter no faster then 40kph. And when filtering, you may want to keep your brakes covered. And always be prepared, to brake in a straight line, while gradually building brake pressure. If the road & tires are clear, warm, and dry, you can squeeze the brakes, at a faster rate. But never just grab them. During different whether conditions, practice sudden maneuvers & braking, in wide open parking lots. KNOW, how quickly you can stop or avoid something, on dry, clean pavement, wet pavement, cold wet pavement, wet painted lines, dry leaves, wet leaves, and snow. Build up how sudden you're actions can be, before the tires start slipping. Be consistent with every action you practice. When the tires start sliding under braking, let go of the brakes, and immediately start gradually building pressure, all over again. Keep doing this, until you slow down or stop, as much as you want. Do this, not only to make the tires stop slipping, under braking, but also to keep the rear wheel on the ground. Depending on where you are, and the conditions, don't go faster them you can stop, and do your best to avoid tire sliding, and avoid lifting the rear wheel off the ground. Both reduce your ability to stop. Try equipping the best tires for the season, even have multiple wheel sets, with different tires, so you can switch tires relatively quickly. And always remember to hold your bike with your legs, under braking, if you can....unless you're on a step through scooter/underbone, or a bicycle. Then you will have to hang on to the bike with, and put some of your weight on, the handle bars...but everyone else avoid doing that, squeeze the tank & frame area, with your knees, to keep your weight off the handle bars, while braking or turning.

Another thing I often think about, and commented on another post, is car drivers will often think we are speeding... simply because the only time the see it on the road (highway) is when we are passing... so we must be going fast or speeding right? Not necessarily... When I come up behind a car on the highway, or any boxy vehicle... the air flow over and around the vehicle make sitting behind a very unpleasant place to be... so I move out and get past as soon as I can safely do so. Car drivers will not give a thought to the air flow behind their vehicle and how this affects the rider.

To add to number 10, its adds to the aerodynamic addition to bikes, you can save a couple miles tucking down and pulling the trottle. Regarding wearing gear to look cool, what I think is foolish, in when I see a guy riding in the summer time, in shorts & flip flops. I understand it’s hot & it looks cool to go down the road & feel the breeze, but a simple spill could become serious with the loss of large majority of skin, as it comes into contact with the rough hot pavement at 50 mph. A simple pair of blue jeans & a riding jacket would be a step in the right direction towards a safer riding option.

Good video! (mc driver since 94) There is another situation that may irritate drivers, that MC drivers suddenly turn down and pull away from drivers (feeling provocative for some drivers) In fact, here in Stockholm, many people are too close to others and make sudden file changes usually not to use indicators! Then I can often feel threatened as MC driver (when I'm unprotected) Then it happens that I switch down to take away the situation! Greetings from Sweden (MC drivers who never crashed)

For some of us newer riders, can you post a blog on how to handle wind when riding? I have been riding for about 7 months and I live in Florida USA and even local riding 40mph going over quite a lot of bridges the wind gets pretty bad and even at my age of 35 it does get a little scary. I have a Yamaha Bolt Spec R "Its similar to a Harley Iron just 60 more CC's. Thanks for the videos!

Get used to it. Or buy a windshield. Over time your neck and upper body will adapt to the wind and it will get easier. If it does bother you that much, add a fairing or windshield to you bike. A bolt spec R is a naked "cruiser" so wind is to be expected. I ride a fully faired sport bike. I just tuck and vola! No wind.

Basically this should be an integrated part of car driver schooling. The loud pipe argument is the only one being more or less debatable.A person in a closed modern car environment with the airco on and the radio blasting will also not hear you in time when you have a loud exhaust. A good car driver should however compensate for that by depending even more on visual input. Very few do! Let's say that just as with visible "indicators" a loud exhausts serves a dual purpose: It increases the chance of being recognized and combines that with the bonus of ego enhancement (says a guy with a loud bike). But it's never a guarantee.

Oooh, good vid. 1. Some people don't understand bikes as well. The sheer power to weight plus the higher rpm engines make them seem like we are riding hard and accelerating hard compared to them, when in fact it is mild. I myself will sometimes use the bikes power to get distance from people I feel are not driving attentively. But there are those that are agressive in the end... 2. Yuppers, gear for protection of myself. I wear it for all the people who would be negatively affected if I crash and am not wearing proper gear. That said, no reason cannot have good gear and be looking cool! 3. And with the side mirrors, bikes and riders are typically higher position than a respective car operator making us seem close too! 4. Is surprising how many riders don't know that. 5. Loud pipes save lives is a big one I tend to argue. Most cars are silent. Combined with wind noise and fact exhaust is facing backwards, it is almost impossible to hear the exhaust of a motorcycle until you are already in a dangerous position. They say ride like you are invisible. I add ride like they are deaf cause unless traffic is stopped and you are right beside em, the car won't hear ya. 6. Part of our road test. Even though off to one side here, if you leave enough space for a car to get it's nose beside you, you fail. And like you said, I always have myself stopped so I can gun it around a car ahead of me. 7. Ahh, happens once a day usually... 8. I have a writeup I call "The Invisible Rider" that talks about how there are situations rendering a person essentially invisible to oncoming traffic. Light glare or aligned headlights the worst offenders. 9. I don't have high viz -_- 10. I wish my bike had a screen. Duck behind that cluster on highway!

Question number seven. The only thing that a turn signal tells you is that the blinker fluid has not run out of the vehicle. It only tells you that the blinker still works. Don't make assumptions, ever. Being seen is a good reason to put a yellow bulb in your headlight on a motorcycle so that it attracts more attention. Not only that, yellow light is easier for your eyes to see at night than is blue spectrum lighting.

I mainly check everyone out at a stop to see who's going to be distracted when traffic begins to flow again so i know who i need to get the fuck away from.

Another situation that does not apply to all bikers! I have a big V 2 1854cc that is air cooled! When I get in queues and the speed is almost 0 kmh and I wear my protective gear on a hot and sunny day, both me and my MC are overheated, it's like sitting right on a sauna! Earlier with just that MC I had to stay MC and step off to cool down both me and MC ... But now I do not do it anymore! I siczackar and drive between car queues to avoid being overheated! I understand that other drivers are cursed by such behavior! But they would understand me if they were driving my MC! Greetings from Sweden (no crash of about 100,000 km on MC)
