"not everything needs to be minimal" I love that! I learned it's okay to not be minimalist in everything I do or own. Love seeing you two collab again!

I agree with this a lot since fashion is something I love. I will say that my wardrobe feels a lot more minimal now than it did a year or so ago, but I know I still have a lot in other areas with clothing in particular :)

I think I get the intention of the point made...however, saying it's an area that is not ' minimal' doesn't really fit with my belief/ understanding of what minimalism is....the way you discuss it makes it sounds like it's all about the numbers.....having a tea collection or lots of plants isn't an area that isn't 'minimalist', they bring value/ joy/ meaning/ use to you, then that area of your life IS still minimalist because you've chosen to have those things in your life intentionally. I know you probably know this but just the way you referred to it and spoke about it, it sounded like if a person has ' a lot' of some area of items then somehow that area of your life is not minimal. I think an area could not be considered minimal if you have an area of your life where you are not applying any thought or intention and just 'ignoring' an entire aspect of your life...then maybe that area of your life could be considered not minimal.

I think Sarah made a really good point at the start about how minimalists continually fight the pressures of consumerism; as much as minimalism is a choice, it does not mean it comes easy. You have to still consciously think about what and what not to buy. I also love what Ashlynne mentioned about how not every aspect of your life has to be minimal. I've caught myself a lot saying "I really want to buy this but it will be considered too much for minimalism". It's ok to buy something if it's a hobby or something you find meaningful or intentional like Ashlynne's example tea.

This video is great. Particularly when you were both talking about how minimalism is a journey and it surprising how many stages of decluttering you can go through. Over the last few years I’ve started decluttering a couple of times a year and I’m always shocked at how much I manage to get rid of each time when I haven’t been buying loads more stuff!

Agree 100% that not everything needs to be minimalist, however I think everything you do should bring make you happy (if possible). Live is too short not to be happy.

Ive been a minimalist quite recently, and what I know is that minimalism is a lifestyle (as what Fumio Sasaki said in his book) therefore it is an ongoing event and it has no ending. The moment you stop being a minimalist, then you revert back to being a maximalist. And as what Joshua Fields Millburn mentioned in one of his podcast, "If you become miserable when you minimalize, then you're doing it wrong."

So true about allowing yourself to have a few "non-minimalist" practices that bring you joy! Mine is my collection of over 250+ vinyl records, some which I inherited from relatives who once loved them, and some which I chose because I love them- and I LOVE playing them all. Fortunately, they all fit into a medium sized book shelf so it's not too overwhelming of a collection space wise lol

I feel as you get older you become more cautious of all the stuff you collect. I’m 52 yrs old and I have removed a lot of stuff and keep doing. Thanks to your videos I’m learning.

I was practising minimalism, (by tt I mean no more buying new or unnecessary things), but then mom passed and all her stuff are now "meaningfully" in my house.

I've continued on my minimalism journey and while I'm very happy with what I've decluttered and how far I've come, I definitely understand the whole "not everything needs to be minimal" bit, because while I'm heading towards owning less and cleaning up my wardrobe, my biggest vice is sneakers. I'm very much part of the sneaker world and that's a pretty maximal collecting world where it's all about the latest and greatest and owning this and that, and so while I pursue minimalism, my sneaker habit is definitely something that I'm trying to keep under control. 😆

I thought my closet would be soooo easy... then I started looking at each piece and thinking of who gave it to me, memories with that piece... and then only being able to put aside a few shirts. 😔 I LOVE hoodies! I know I have too many but I can’t seem to part with them... any further advice?

Thank you, when I started minimalism I was following marikondo her second stage was books. I love books so this was a big stumbling block for me. I stalled for ages. If I had known more I could have missed that stage till later. Books perhaps are my sentimental items which mari kondo says should be done last.
