Hey there! So have you started the Curly Girl Method? Have you taken the plunge? Do you think this whole process is worth it?
@Samchoccymilk
4 жыл бұрын
I hope it will be worth it! I'm a wavy and have been using the method. I used to put no product or heat in my hair at all and thought product was bad, but you just gotta get the right stuff! The length of my hair does weigh down my curls into being more wavy while air drying, and I find that no matter how I diffuse it it still causes so much frizz. Gonna hang in there and keep trying, cause on wash days I cant help but to feel fabulous with my definition!

It is worth it! I started in January, and it has finally started to be consistent good hair days. It is amazing, I see myself in the mirror and it’s like I finally see myself the way I was supposed to be! It’s crazy how just taking care of my hair has turned into loving my hair which has turned into loving the core of who I am! Love your channel Courtney!

Btw @samantha viviano, I have found muuuuuch better diffusing results by gently cradling my hair as I am diffusing. So, for example, while my diffuser is on the back of my hair, with my other habd I will always cradle the front curls, and then when the diffuser goes to the front, I cradle the back. no smashing or scrunching, just protecting from gravity and the weight of the water. It has doneAMAZING for my definition, curl at the root, and volume! Also look up hammock diffusing for a similar concept, but it was too slow for me lol and my hair dryer on the counter wouldnt stay in place 😂 Good luck and keept at it! 🤗

I've been doing a modified CG method since about March this year. I do agree that this way of managing my hair is more time consuming and definitely a trail and error thing. I get frustrated with my hair's texture quite often, as the back of my head is less wavy than the front. Sometimes it's even straight after plopping and styling 😑 Still, I enjoy how my hair has become healthier, and how I can make the wave pattern pop with some products, for the most part lol, and then let it fall straight without products if I want a break. I'm a 2a-2b wavy so it's nice that I can go from more defined waves to a more relaxed, nearly straight, hair.

Hi Courtney! This was a great and much needed video. Could you do one for "Things I wish I had known during transition"? I am 2 months into this journey and now I am experiencing less frustration after realizing things like, good second hair day won't happen until a few more months, is not like I am doing something wrong, just have to be patient. Also I noticed that I still can't quite refresh with water without getting a ton of frizz but it seems to be getting better as my hair gets healthier. Thanks!

I'm on my third month with 2c-3a curls and totally agree with the self acceptance bit and I think that's the biggest gift of CGM! The fact that the hair which you previously once thought wasn't as great as others(read straight shiny hair) could become a defining feature without having to artificially modify it kind of translates to all other parts of one's life ☺️☺️

YESSSSSS!!! You know, you're right! What a GREAT comment! 😀 I don't have big curls...I'm frizzy curly-haired. I don't do the natural dash because I look like a biker gang lady, or a way tool old escapee from the OG Woodstock Festival! But you know what?? I'm gonna try it! And I'm gonna run my hair through it, or even brush my hair! 😱 Mountain Woman look!! It's actually easy for me to blow-dry my hair with a wand drier, becauseI end up with a great blowout, and I don't need to tire both arms. Twenty minutes, and it lasts days. And that's because the body from my hair results in gentle, long waves. They did an experiment, and it turns out that blow-drying your hair is healthier than air drying it! Apparently, the hot air protects the cuticle or shafts? Anyway, I totally thought the opposite would be true, but blow drying rules for hair health - unlike hit iron, that fries it. BUT....back to your comment: It is straight that curly hair can look so dramatic, but God gave it to us, so let's try your suggestion! 😀

Thanks for putting out some hard truths about the CGM journey and the encouragement to stay the course. I gave up after 4 months, deciding I was just not a wavy girl. So I focused on hair health instead of waves and at about the 5 month mark I had a decent wavy day! Followed by months of frizzy failure. But about 9 months in I started to find my groove and am now getting consistent wavy results. And like you it came with self-acceptance. To find a routine that worked for me I had to stop trying to make it wavy like yours, and discover what *my* waves looked like.
@tracyvision

Silverhaired59 If you can see my profile pic that’s a good wavy day for me - air dried with a bit of Bumble & bumble grooming creme gives me some volume and big natural waves with minimal gray frizz. I can get it wavier with more time and product (uncle funky daughter’s curly magic + Jessicurl Spiralicious on soaking wet hair, plop 15 mins, diffuse forever). For me the secret is to not comb through my hair once out of the shower - praying hands and scrunching/pulsing is my friend. But it took months for my hair to be hydrated enough to hold a wave.

The first good hair day I had since when I started the cgm (I was super happy and proud of it btw) I had someone tell me my hair looked really pretty and she asked me how long it took me to do my and I started talking about how it probably only took maybe 10 minutes on top of normal washing to style it and then she asked me “that’s you natural hair?!?!” And it was one of the most encouraging moments of my journey. She thought I had curled my hair!!! And idk why but that has been one of the best moments and reasons I haven’t given up on curly girl

I'm on cgm for 4 months and after 2 month mark my hair become so healthy and shiny that I couldn't believed it. I'm using quite affordable drugstore products but I think it was the Olaplex No3 that made big difference coz I dye my hair black once a month. After two months I stoped experimenting with prudcts coz I found good combo but now I'm looking for some more advanced products. I trained myself with technique that works for me and it's less of a work and time consuming but it took some time getting used to it for sure. When it comes trying products I was struggling more before cgm actually. I feel like the reason people struggle with products in cgm is coz they are just starting and hair is in transition so nothing looks good. Even the best of products won't look in demaged hair so it's important to be patient. Find some decent products and start with that and then upgrade it as you're progressing.

Yes, please cover surfactants! I have bought a few clarifying shampoos, but I have no clue which is the best one for my situation. My hair tends toward dryness, so the Suave is too much. I use Deva's buildup buster most of the time since it seems less drying, but would love your thoughts.

I have found during my transition that I occasionally have a curl that sort of goes wild. I have gotten compliments from strangers on the little curl, I think that is because there is contrast between the hair that decided to be wavy versus the rest of the frizzy mess atop my head.

I have to say, I started the curly girl method just before Thanksgiving 2020 and this transition time is tough. I get my hair done and it looks pretty good -with some nice waves, not clumping like yours, but clumping more than it did before the curly girl method. (I didn't even know what a curl clump was HA!) And just like you said, 2 hours later, my waves are not only hanging limp, but I have a halo of frizz around my head. UGH. BUT, I HAVE had people say, "wow, what are you doing to your hair, it has so much volume and looks great!" I'm like, seriously?? But I take it and feel good that I am doing something good for my hair! I have watched so many of your videos to help me through transition and learn all I can, my husband thinks I'm too obsessed (and I probably am, but I love it), I hope I can get him to see the changes my hair is making! I have a bit thicker hair, but have used a lot of your tips in my routine. I definitely have one side that is wavier than the other though. lol! Also, I love your makeup! Which brands do you use and have you done a makeup tutorial? Cause that would be awesome!!

With your hair blow dried straight you looked good also ...I have to say that.. sometimes in communities/groups it's almost forbidden to say such things...like is you don't embrace your natural you. I think it has nothing to do with that... it's just change looks, do what you like that particular day, like when you want to go blonde or brown or red... like wearing the hair loose or in an updo. Just wanted to say this (I'm a wavy/curly as well) that the variety you can have is so nice.

As an adult I've always had the same issue with completely detangled hair becoming tangled without any contact, wind, etc. Thank you for adding the ending to this video. So much truth that I'm starting to enjoy! Loving your channel.

I’m on month 4; I have a really straight layer in the underneath of my hair; I had a few “good hair days” but for the last month there’s been non! Also I’ve had ridiculous amounts of frizz practically every day!

I'm about 7 months in and my hair is finally starting to Look much more healthy and s Lot shinier! I must say though , that i don't do everything exactly how the cgm says it/roughly following the Rules but it is definetely worth it! For real, this method has saved my hair, which was damaged by certain silicones and wrong hair caire. I am so thankful🙏

I enjoy watching your videos! My hair is 2a and I’ve started almost 2 months ago. I’m still learning and my hair is still transitioning. I sometimes question myself if I made the right choice for my hair type. Btw I totally agree with you specially the last two points! ❤️

I’m roughly at the same point as you, I’ve always known I have curly hair but I used to straighten it everyday! I agree with all ten things 100%! I even found myself finishing your sentences with you 😂. So thank you for this! And kudos on your journey! 💕

I hope it's worth it! I started last month and like you, I thought it would make things faster for me in the morning, less product, etc....not! My hair was clumping well at first, it appeared curlier because of that (before, I was using sulfates/silicones everyday and drying with a diffuser on high heat full blast most days for over 10 years)...my hair was a little curlier than yours. But now, it is feeling more straw like and tangled and less curly... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong :( I've been avoiding proteins the last few days to see if that's the issue. I wear my hair up during the humid summers, so I will have a break from diffusers. Usually I slick it back in a tight bun, but now, I will wear it up loosely in scrunchies and embrace my '90s inner child! P.S. your hair looks awesome today!

I was born with tight spiral curls but never knew, my mother always dried my hair straight and I followed suit as I grew up and did it on my own. It wasn't until I was 18, went to the beach with friends and my hair dried on its own, super curly! Salt water really brings out the curls. I confirmed with my mom (who has fat curls and my dad has tight spirals) that I was born with curls. I do not wash my hair every day but I do wet my hair daily to tame the frizz. For bigger curls like yours, "flopping" is a good method. I spent 6 years using straightening treatments (profile pic) and it took about 4 years to get my curls back. FYI: when you turn 40-45, your hair will dry out :( You will miss the oil, I swear! When it is dry it breaks hence your problem with straightening.

You are not the only one Courtney. I have had several days that I didn’t want to do anything to my hair and people have complimented me or asked how I got my hair like that. There has even been I couple of times after swim practice when I was in high school that before I got home to shower, so my hair was a stringy chlorine filled, tangled mess and someone would compliment my hair.

I can’t help but think that all those strangers that stopped to tell you they liked your hair was God keeping you motivated. You come on camera a even though you don’t have a faith based channel you wear your Christian shirts and mention God to people that maybe weren’t even thinking about him that day. This is your ministry!

I starter the CGM for about two weeks already and I still have a lot of frizz. But my co-workers say that my hair is cute and if I have it permed. And I was like "actually it's bad and frizzy" but their words give me the confidence to just let my hair flow. Hahaha.

I started the CGM two weeks ago after MONTHS of research and I've just used my new products today and was super frustrated because my hair is still feeling not great and not sitting how I want it to. I've not used too much product etc but I have to remember I've dyed my hair 7 times since February and this is gonna be a longggggg process. Even after cutting 3 inches of damage away! Resisting the urge to just wash, blowdry and run the straighteners through is SO tough right now! Your videos are keeping me going with the whole thing, it's a journey and persistence is key but omg I wish it was easier!

These have been my observations exactly....I finally love my healthy curly...like 3a....who knew...I fought it forever...only bleach sort of subdued it until it broke off...don’t get me started...thank you Courtney for expressing Gods gift of beautiful hair to us so eloquently 😃❤️🙏🏼

I've been "getting started" since about April. Still learning and making mistakes. Definitely frustrating to spend so much time getting my hair wavy only to have it almost completely gone in a few hours. BUT! Definitely getting positive comments from coworkers and family even when I'm down about it being a "bad" wavy day.

I think everyone should try using products with less chemicals in them. That's my favorite part about the CG method. My hair just loves your tips about aloe vera gel and the apple cider vinager. I haven't tried the flaxseed gel or the dark beer rinse yet. My biggest issue is the dryness and the inconsistency hair days. They are mostly bad. I would love to find the right products for my hair and a routine that works but it is exhausting to try and fail almost every time. I just don't understand what my hair wants and needs. I love your videos! 😍😘

I noticed improvements in my hair after using a sulfate-free shampoo, now I'm waiting for another bottle and a silicone-free conditioner to arrive. I've type 2 hair but am not sure which one since like you said the curls drop really quickly now in the beginning. So far I've only had waves on day one and they drop a lot in a short time, great to hear it being the same for someone that has pulled through and gotten great results ❤

what are your tips for tangles? Is that just a time thing? This is part of my issue. My hair actually isn't bad on wash day - I can get it untangled without too much frustration but the problem is that it tangles as soon as it dries. So I wash, style, let dry - and then by end of day it is tangled. In terms of "look" I can last until day 3 (wash on day 4) but sometimes I get frustrated with the fact that my hair is so tangled so I wash sooner

I love seeing other fellow curlies who love the science of Haircare! Have you checked out @thebeautybrains or @theecowell? They have podcasts, KZitem videos, and are on Instagram. They are cosmetic chemists in the cosmetic industry and they help correct all the misinformation that often gets spread. It's been really fascinating! I've learned my hair and scalp don't like the curly girl method and it wasn't worth it for me. You seem to be having great results though, which I'm so happy about! These pages just helped give me a complete picture so I didn't feel so bad about it not working for me. I highly recommend it!
