if i can add another tip, before flying your drone, make sure the satellite count are good like 15 sats or more, no yellow warnings of anything, and dont be to greedy with your battery, if the drone is way too far and your battery is almost depleted return in back home, i myself if its already 30 percent, its time to go back...

Lots of clever advice based on experience and knowledge. I would like to add reconnaissance, checking the flight area up before flying, and awareness. Lost orientation? Use the zoom out, camera elevation, spin the view around and get hold of the situation. The more zoom, the more easy to loose orientation. (Mavic 3 PRO)...

Great video, thanks. Most of my drone flying is from my boat (not whilst underway), which is another dimension to this issue! I lost my drone a couple of months ago because a) I hadn't worked out what I was going to do and tried to decide that after I had launched and b) whilst I was trying to decide, I hadn't got the drone far enough away from the anchored yacht. A slight movement of the boat meant the drone got snagged in the rigging and fell into 8m of water

1) Pause button...Never realized that one. Now, it's my new best friend! Question...does it continue when you release it? 2) Talking to someone while in the air, against the FAA rules. When people come and start talking, I ask them to wait until I land and I'll be happy to answer questions, give advice, etc. I also have a safety vest with printing saying, "Drone pilot, do not disturb"

Tip 5, in visual line of sight..... Navigating close to obstacles like trees or hills beside the drone, below it, or over (trees), the drone doesn't need to be far away for the eyes to lose the view of the little bug. I spin the drone around, angles the camera up and/ or down to gain awarness of close proximity. Flew a few days ago, focused on the Mavic 3 PRO, looked down at the control, and the hovering craft was lost... Flying a little bit up helped a few times, but not every time. The background was dark trees and the Mavic is black...

Simple way to fly sideways is to be higher than the surrounding area. I always fly about 20ft above trees and buildings. It’s always better to survey your surroundings than making an expensive mistake. I made sure I brought two extra batteries and a quick charging power-bank.

Thanks for all the cautions, Ian. I try to keep them in mind. Today I came too close to some power lines as I was not flying as high as I thought. Not sure what happened; perhaps I had inadvertently been pulling down on the left stick or just hadn’t elevated the drone high enough at the outset. At any rate, I breathe a sigh of relief tonight as I am still crash free. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Hi Ian I always watch your videos and hopefully take in all your wisdom… I have a DJI mini 2 and it’s my pride and joy. During our recent tour of Scotland I tried to get in as much flying in as possible, however I’m still a relatively new drone pilot. As you probably know, that when in Scotland you’re never far from water, so the plan was to try and get some great shots either flying around the coast or over some of the many thousands of Lochs. I don’t have much experience of flying over water so it was time to learn…. A lot of the time it was too windy or raining so flying was very limited. Last week we were next to Loch Lomond when my chance came. It was a bit windy and the day was also coming to an end but I went for it. I purposely kept it low but was terrified of flying it over the water and tried to keep it within sight, although the tree line along the other bank meant I had trouble seeing it so brought it back in a loop towards me, until that nightmare happened, it went sideways into a tree… I instantly thought of your episode of the drone in the tree so went looking and there it was hanging by a propeller halfway up the tree… Fortunately as I began to climb this fairly thin but tall birch tree my drone dropped to the ground. Fortunately it landed in some thick grass, and on close inspection it was still in good shape … Phew!! … A day or so later we were down in south Ayrshire by the coast and it was a good day for flying. I sent it up and was going great guns when suddenly I lost the signal with the drone. I couldn’t control it and began to panic as it was now out of sight and I couldn’t even hear it. I was running up and down like a mad person, when the low battery warning started. I panicked some more until eventually I could hear it returning to the home point. I looked up and to my relief there it was returning home. The relief I felt was obvious so I rushed back to my camper van and there it was just coming down to land. What relief I had, but it also taught me some more lessons… I must say that right now I’ve lost the confidence to fly over water. However I know that will come back. I just need some more flying time to increase my confidence. That will come!! … All I need to do now is pay more attention of your video’s and knowledge … Thanks Ian I love your videos and you’re doing a great job 👍😊🍻
@IaninLondon
Жыл бұрын
2 close calls there, but you need to learn from them rather than let them bash your confidence. If anything, be more confident now as you are aware of issues that you weren't aware of before. Trees suck up signal and it's very easy to lose video signal when you're standing near them. And water is no different to land, except that if the drone hits an obstacle, it will fall into the water and you won't get it back. So stay high above all obstacles over water, and don't fly less than 10 metres as the reflections can mess up the downward vision sensors and you may even lose height without any stick input from you..... :)

Great video Ian mate... I noticed on mini 3 pro that side ways turning was off when flying from the box. Is it best to keep sideways function turned off mate?
@IaninLondon

I don't think so, as you literally cannot even swerve sideways; the only way to move is to turn the nose and point it in a new direction, which us a bit too restrictive I think....

Ian, I am flying home from Ireland and listening to your channel. Quite interesting material and thank you. Wow, I loved the wind test videos, but they are making me kick myself while flying back to the states because maybe I could have flown the DJI Mavic 3 Classic in winds at 25 mph gusting to 39 mph. I flew the drone up to about 3 meters and the drone seemed a bit unsteady, so I chose to not fly as a precaution. I would felt much worse if I wasnt carrying my drone home. As you say, best to be safe so your drone can live to fly another day. My experience has lead me to ask a question. I have not seen any content about bird attacks. Maybe hearing a future post about that would be cool. Have you ever dealt with Seagulls or bird drone attacks? I was flying in Ireland along a cliff, and every time I went up, the Seagulls came out of no where with a vengeance as though they were attempting to do a direct hit of my Mavic 3 Classic, I simply came down in sport mode and landed not taking a chance.

It's hard to film a bird attack but best advice is to rise up fast and fly away fast. Birds can dive but don't usually attack from below 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
