I hear the man I apprenticed in metalwork with in you :) A few things he used to say..."If it's not made and on the display, they can't buy it"..."Don't deny the public! If they like it make more, and more!"...and one day he had me making price labels for 6.00 for an item. He walked by a few minutes later, took the pen and said, "Most important lesson in retail", then wrote 8.00 on the next tag. He smiled and said, "I just made 2.00, with a pen. Let's make them all 8.00." (it was in the early 80s, so the prices were timely)

The part about the photography is interesting. I remember you used to be really encouraged to use a plain, stark white background without a lot of anything else in the picture. It was seen as more 'professional'. I actually love the idea of being able to 'pose' my items differently and also show them in other places. I think it was an aesthetic that was pushed so hard on Etsy because the alternative was ugly pictures like eBay. In 2006 when I started Etsy, it was still pretty common for people to take a picture with random stuff in the background. It was an eye-opening experience for me to realize I could sell my product for more if I just took better pictures. Even people with bad photography skills (like me) can manage a white background

I make sea glass necklaces, one of a kind. It's really difficult to try to make more than one of the same item because no two pieces of sea glass are alike. I've made sales, but I don't want my shop to tank because my items are one-of-a-kind.
@etsyconsultant

Hi Amy, just do what you can here, list very quickly back down on to items that have sold, with new items. Just change the photos, price, and anything else you need and publish it. Keep doing this and your sales will slowly go up, but you have to be utterly consistent and keep doing it.
@DebraDavis-z5j

If anyone knows anything about sea glass they will expect every one to be different. Just put the same style necklace and put you have a certain amount of it. It doesn't matter if they are shaped different, Just do a close as you can to the same type of wrap. Then say neckaces design vary due to the nature of sea glass. Then if you want to make a different style do that but make some as close to eachother as you can. You can still be unique but try to group similar styles together, and say designs will vary.

How to do: truly handcrafted items aren’t going to have tons of stock on each product or you’d be in debt with materials/supplies. If you’re solepreneur making say ten different products and you list every color/scent separately to get to 100 there’s no way you could have lots of stock on each product, especially to keep inventory fresh (oils, butters, cosmetic ingredients have shelf lives). As soap/bath product business this model doesn’t seem possible. I’m watching all of your incredible vids trying to figure out how to implement your strategies in my niche because you seem quite credible! 😊

This is the issue I have. I make artisan soaps, as welll as a certain selection of handcrafted beaded items (my shop is a mix of unique items and can often have rare/special items occasionally too), but they are all similar, but different lol. So I have to list them separately I feel. My soaps, I make sure to announce that they are handmade in-house and made in small batches. Most people prefer that when buying artisan soap because it's great quality and they know it's not mass-produced. Same with my solid lotion bars, etc. I just try to keep track of what I have on hand, so that I can make a new batch of what is running low because you kow soap needs curing time. I'm also going back to selling in person locally too, so I will have more stock. I actually find a shop more credible when they have a smaller stock because as you said, we can't mass produce stuff like the stuff dropshippers are selling.

Hi, and thanks for your detailed comment. OK, You have to adapt what I teach for your business, nothing is set in stone. We know deeper stock levels sell more, but in your situation, this would be something you plan for, and work towards over time. What is most important is that you know that you need to work towards it (if you want to grow the business to a decent revenue size), and that you plan your business processes accordingly to get to that goal. Some clients I work with take 2 years to get there, or more.

@@etsyconsultant I decided to binge watch your videos all weekend and try to start sooner then later. It's the fear of starting that has led me to stay in this dark hole. The good news is I have been collecting photos for my products for a month or two, and I am going to take your advice on the videos on top of having the photos I already have. I did the videos on a manican because I am shy but I already forced myself to take photos with my products so I might as well force myself to stop being shy and take a video for each product to. Its better then using a manican for sure! I appreciate the response and support. P.S. I already have some ideas on how to make myself stand out more in telling my potential costumers about certain things I do to ensure better quality (as someone who used to get irritated at purchasing jewelry and it falling apart right away because of the lack of quality and thought) creating it that causes it to fall apart faster. I remember being so sad buying expensive pieces at the store and realizing that whoever made it didn't think about these very important details for the buyers. If they simply put more time into their techniques they could have made the product last much longer. I really think that my experience as a buyer of jewelry before making it and learning from other peoples mistakes will help me build trust with Etsy and my future customers. Thanks again...

HI. I'm guilty in a couple of areas though I am trying to put your advice into practice where I can. I make and sell one of a kind jewellery, like many others, so stock levels are an issue and even if I had the resources to duplicate designs they wouldn't be exactly the same as the gemstones are not identical. I also struggle to see the value in producing multiple of the same item that may not even sell. That's expensive and risky. However I did watch your video on one of a kind shops and took in your suggestions though haven't applied them yet. I have also watched your videos on SEO in 10 minutes and have applied that to my shop with noticeable results. I am endeavouring to build up to 100 items, I'm up to 42. 😊 Biggest problem is photos/videos with item in use. I'm in my 60's so even if I could take a decent selfie, it's not going to be an attractive photo. I don't know anyone who could model for me when I need them. Hiring someone? Every time I have a few pieces ready to go? Thanks for all your advice on how Etsy works. It's been enlightening.

I am up to just over 60 listings - In the last 30 days I have had 73 visits and only 1 sale (The one sale comes from a family member). I myself think I have a nice and well-designed shop with good products, mockups, my own logo, etc. So my question is: Why am I not getting any sales? What can I do to get it going?
@Dreamy-writer
9 ай бұрын
Obviously, I'm not Nick, but I wanted to leave my two cents in case it helps. I tried a POD shop for ~7 months and never had a single sale. I ended up opening a new shop and decided to focus on selling my designs (digital files of the designs) rather than POD shirts and within the first month, I've got 3 sales. Not a huge number, but for me, it helped me to see that the issue (possibly) was I was selling in POD which is highly saturated. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it is competitive. This little "experiment" showed me that my approach to my shop was okay (titles, tags, listing photos, etc), but perhaps the markets I was targeting were too saturated. I would say my designs could be an issue, but I hardly got any visits on my POD shop as my listings were pushed so far down the list of results that popped up because of how many other shops were selling in the same niche. Just my two cents, though. Good luck with your shop!

Superb video, Nick. Succinct as usual. I would love you to do a video about Etsy thumbnails - especially for digital mock-ups. My thumbnails are slightly blurry until you click on the product. They are Jpeg/PNGs. I also can't work out the area to fill when designing a thumbnail so it doesn't get cropped. Even advice on where to find technical help would be useful. Also, what happened with Lou? 😃
@etsyconsultant
9 ай бұрын
Thanks! The thumbnail issues sounds odd, Etsy encodes all photos when uploaded, try to take pictures with something different and see if that solves the problem. The thumbnail cropping on primary photos occurs top and bottom, about 20%, not the left and right sides. Lou and I will be back with the series when we can, Lou is currently busy with other work!

I always love you reminding us not to fret over SEO. It's the one thing I hate to do. Thank you! I am guilty as charged regarding prices being too low. QUESTION: I read or heard somewhere that it is better to have a variety of prices. I sell digital art and thought I'd take the easy route - one price shop-wide (excluding gallery sets etc.). Is that a bad idea?
@ingridgilbert4917
10 ай бұрын
You'd have a better chance of finding your ideal price point if you have prices that run the gamut, you might be surprised at what works out the best. For me, it's not the lowest price. Once you know you can bring the prices in line with that.

What is a reasonable expectation for a new store on terms of sales expectations, please? I realise it depends on a lot of variables, of course. But how quickly would you expect to see sales if adding a product a day? 1 month, 3 months. How do we know we are on track? Any important things to look for in terms of traffic and sales? For instance after 3 or 6 months what might you expect?Thank you.

As a rough guide if you list 1 item per day and get to 100 items (100 days), all things considered I would hope to see a few sales to prove viability in what you are doing. If you have no sales at all as you approach 100 items, then there is an issue with what you are selling, and this will need addressing.

The majority of in demand templates in these categories are beauty/fashion - would attacking this market from a more male oriented/business side of things be more viable or do we simply follow the working products (70% working) to risk products (30% product risk) ratio you talk about in your videos ? Hi Nick, Does purchase by customer (guest, through shared link to my Etsy listing) is counted to my visibility score? In shop stats it's under "Direct & other traffic". Does it count?
@etsyconsultant
9 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment. The only way that you earn quality score from buyers coming to your store is if they find it organically, ie searching for an item within Etsy, finding your item, and buying it. Any traffic which is sent your store with shop links, listing links will count as 'direct traffic'.

I have a question. This might sound naive, but: Why do I have to pay taxes for my etsy earnings when Etsy is already charging taxes on the merchandise I sell on the platform?
@etsyconsultant
9 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Sales tax is paid by your customers and submitted to the relevant country's tax department, depending on where the buyer is located. This is a tax for the buyer. Tax on your earnings is due to where you are registered for tax. This is true for items you buy, you pay sales tax, and the company remits this tax to the government and at the same time is liable to pay tax on their earnings.

@etsyconsultant

Honestly Caelin, I would advise you not to do this, just 1 a day, no need to overcook your store. I understand the temptation to list faster, but you do not want to overcook your store, and have no conversion rate (which is what happens a lot when you do what you are suggesting).

Etsy needs to know your store is viable by making sales. More sales means more exposure by Etsy. Less sales and you sink lower and lower into the abyss of “dead” stores.
