HOME GIRL You probably shouldn’t mention that in an interview. All that you have to say is “I am looking for a more progressive/innovative/family oriented environment”. Bring it back around to the culture that you are looking for or the culture that particular company emulates. If asked specifically about your boss I would just say that it wasn’t a good fit, that his leadership style was different than you are looking for, or that or something along those lines. Always give the impression that you are easy to work with and friendly. Regardless of the situation going into uncomfortable details will turn people off.

Well, you don’t wanna be talking about how bad your ex was while on a first date with a potential gf right? Same with job interviews...Focus on what works & what’s right & what you’re working on versus the past failures & stuff...Makes you look weak... girlfriends & employers don’t usually like that. 😉 I feel ya though! I wish we could all just talk judgement free but we don’t live in a perfect society & we need to be sure we’re not dating/hiring bad people... Are you joking? You should see the absolutely horrible cover letters and resumes that come across your desk by applicants (yes -- mostly new college grads and millennials with barely 2 years of work experience). Cover letters that are a full page of drivel and resumes that aren't even relevant to the job posted. And then IN the interviews -- really? You can't offer anything to embellish on a question rather than just saying 'yes' or 'no'? One guy I recall just always answered "absolutely" and then just raved about his (lack of) experience in little jobs during college. The reality is, a boss doesn't want to have to nurse you through EVERYTHING in the job. If you're not that relevant or so clueless as to not speak well of your specific talents and abilities in the job I need to fill -- GO HOME and have your parents continue to make you your meals.

Interview should be more casual. Such a dog and pony show. “Oh, look at me, look at the great things I’ve done. I’m a great person.” Hiring managers would get a better idea for a persons true personality if they just had a normal back and forth conversation about the position. You can still talk about accomplishments and work history and all that jazz. Instead, they look for the perfect answer and the perfect execution of your answer, and they end up with a office full of half assers who hate their job and don’t get along.

Yes - do ask about pay! You're not on a date, you're there to earn money - KNOW how much the role pays before you waste your time going for a bunch of interviews to find out that it's way below market or what you want - I have had some hiring managers spring a low number on me and I have curtailed the interview process there and then! It shows, too, that you mean business - it's a business negotiation and your 'selling' your sweat, labour, and time. I ask about half way or near the end of the first interview - I don't wait till near the end of the second or god forbid, the third interview! If they get all bent out of shape, remind them it's a job interview and you expect to be paid for what you do - it also shows you have balls and are not afraid to use them! If you're too afraid to ask about the salary, get a volunteer job!
@perryegolson833

Greg MacMillan This is a touchy area. Need to be careful. Most legitimate companies will not lowball a good candidate because they don’t want to lose them. At some point usually fairly early in the process the company will ask you what fair compensation looks like for you. You need to come at them with a realistic number. You’re absolutely right in the fact that neither party wants to waste the others time so salary is in fact a discussion point. But just be pretty quick about it. Just know going in what the industry standard is for the position and chances are (if the company isn’t trying to lowball you) that’s what you can expect to receive or maybe a little more,who knows?

It's frustrating getting rejected for jobs that you can do in your sleep. You feel like the deck is stacked against you. @picklepirate

how much does that desperation show? Are you more trying to beg for a job or are you interested in bringing value to a company? I went from scouring Indeed for random searches and took five months with no offers. Finally, I looked at lists of businesses in my area and found two really awesome companies that didn't have a job posting, so I emailed them what I want to help them with and both emailed me the next day for an interview. So, job postings online are usually not the best bet and I stopped focusing on myself.

aposterioriatheist You must be either very young or very naive. It is a given that you are going to be paid for the position you are interviewing for. Companies like to know that if they hire you, you are not going to bolt as soon as a headhunter calls you with a position that pays a little more. The main priority should be the fit. Is it a good mutual fit? Are you going to be satisfied with the duties? Will you be challenged? Do you see yourself growing in the company? Money isn’t the only factor in considering a job. You should know that. You come across as a greedy jerk if that’s all you care about. Trust me companies will pay for a good employee. It’s worth the investment for them not have to constantly be hiring all the time due to people leaving for more money.

I thought saying that would help me, but after watching this video I now know NOT to let that come out of my mouth. After hearing your explanation on why we shouldn’t say things like that, I honestly have no idea what I was thinking. I can see how that can come across as, “I practically already have this job”. Plus, when I did the pre recorded interview, I took off my blanket and threw it on my couch.. didn’t look very tasteful or professional. I’m definitely going to make sure that I don’t make these mistakes lol. Thank you so much for your help! My interview is Friday morning, wish me luck 🤞🏽

When I worked at an Amazon warehouse and was interviewing for my first promotion they really stressed using "I" instead of "we". They really wanted to make sure I was capable of starting and making change. I'm a very team oriented person so it was hard to own a project I had worked on with others as solely my own, but that's what they wanted.

Hi Cass! Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your advice. I was in a serious 10 month job search. I was getting interviews but not jobs. So I knew I had to do something different. I started watching your videos and taking serious notes. I started doing the work as they say. But I could not have done it without your posts and guidance. I also used your checklist that I downloaded from your site. I asked the hard question too. I ended up getting the job on the spot after my second interview. I know it was the research I did on your posts that helped me be better prepared and get a job!!! Just a huge THANK YOU! What you are doing matters now more than ever. Thanks again, Christina

Cass, you had me at "I am just so excited for this opportunity, I think this job is a great fit for me and here are the reasons why..." Such a wonderfully concise way to phrase exactly what needs to be said out of the gate. Bravo and thank you. It definitely seems simple enough but for some reason first time interviewers like me are undecided on the initial approach. Again, thanks.

Enjoyed watching this video. I've had loads of interviews. I can confirm that research is important. Anxiety, my early years I was very self conscious and was a big problem. One interview I was so tense I couldn't speak.. was dreadful I had to come out. However I'm more confident in my actual work history and qualification. Its ability the interviewer is examining and for the interview there should be research. If your going to stay in that vacancy then you'll need to know if it meets with expectations. I've had interviews when they've lasted over 30 minutes and got the position. The interviewer is evaluating and that the thing to remember.. I've had a few odd interviews its difficult to determine what they actually want. One time I seem to have many interviews but not selected and before I started my present role I recieved an email from a previous application to be hired. It was almost a year gone by, so you don't know how they actually evaluate. It happen that company was expanding so they was planning ahead.

Three applicants had interviews, and it was a mess. The first applicant was confident, calm and qualified. The second applicant was unsure, nervous, desperate and not qualified. The third applicant was drunk, drunk and not qualified. Applicant three was hired because of political correctness. *sigh* Thanks for posting this video. I shall watch it a few more times.

I know that sometimes people don't like the simple fact that their being denied because of anxiety. If your anxiety levels a racing, most likely the employers are aware of it. Some people will get denied the job simply because your position will need the ability to not have anxiety when interacting with other people. You might have the knowledge on how to be an effective HR manager, but if your not good at doing interviews it could be hard for you to do your job the way that your employer might want you to.

In the interview for my current job, I was actually asked what I thought about a competitor's product. Fortunately, I'd done some research, so I said "They made good stuff. But I think yours is better, and here's why..." What I didn't realize was that they'd had people bad mouth the competitors to potential customers, which was a "your services are no longer needed" situation. Must have done something right-I've been with them for 11 years now.
