I was living with my folks for a bit, and rented this from our local mom and pop store, watching it in the living room. Mom sat down to watch it as well. At some point, Dad wandered in and asked what we were doing. "Watching a movie about an elderly Elvis, a black guy who says he's JFK, and they're fighting a cowboy mummy. And for some reason, I can't stop watching it." answered my mom.

I just happened to be attending Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX in 2002. I found out that Joe Lansdale lived there. When the movie came out, we had a tiny local premiere. I had the completely randomized pleasure to introduce a Q&A panel consisting of Joe Lansdale, Don Coscarelli, and Bruce Campbell. (I was a bit nervous, over dressed, and over-the-top, so Bruce sat down and said, "Thank you, whoever the HELL you are!") Man... all of my buddies got to meet Bruce at the local hotel bar, but I was still just underage... I took a couple classes with Lansdale at the school: screenwriting, and comic-book writing. No, I didn't need the credits, but come on. Coscarelli came back to the class to talk to us about writing Phantasm. Lansdale was totally country, but eloquent at the same time. His way of grading was, "If it sucks, you get an F." Fans of this movie should look up Lansdale's "The Drive-In," and "Dead in the West" (or "Deadman's Road" anthology) -the latter two, mark my words, will become amazing Western Horror films in the future, complete with a monster-hunting gun-toting priest. Also, "The Thicket," if the movie ever gets made.
@guyvizard549
Жыл бұрын
Sidenote: We watched Lansdale's episodes of Batman in class, and commented (and lampooned) on them. Coscarelli had tried to do a movie of "the Drive-In" in 1989, so he wrote the introduction for the The Drive-In trilogy anthology.

We live between Houston and Galveston (Friendswood). We heard about the premier and drove up, grabbed a hotel room in the same hotel Campbell was in, and were at the first showing. Awesome time. And I'm jealous about the screenwriting class, that had to be awesome.

Two of the most brilliant, flat out inspired audio commetaties ever are Robert Downey Jr. in character the entire two hours on the Tropic Thunder cast commentary where he just roasts everybody, but especially Jack Black and the other is Bruce in character as Elvis for this commentary. He is simply sublime. Its the little touches that make his Elvis impression the best I've ever heard. Particularly when asked by his co-star the favorite of his pictures he ever did and Bruce fully embracing Elvis and the question, states it was Viva Las Vegas where he then describes the plot of a whole other movie and clearly thinking an entirely different film. Its punctuated by his line, ' Yep, that picture had a lot of mystery, sense of atmosphere, intrigue.' Its that last word: intrigue. The key to my Elvis impression that seperates it from everybody else's is working that word into it. It always kills. While the rest of the amateur hours do the obvious 'thankyouverymuch' and he's 'left the building, ' this always hits in it's simplicity and ringing true. Bruce is a genius. Thank you, my dude.

I remember during a San Diego Comic Con, this movie was making the rounds. My best buddy at the time was telling me about it. I remember thinking, " . . . Bubba-Ho-Tep? What da F@#K!?" Years later, I was on an Elvis discovery, and how his charisma made the man a STILL vaunted legend. I came across this movie in the Best Buy DVD aisle, and decided to add it to my growing Elvis library. Funny thing is I was so taken by it, and still impressed by Campbell's performance AS Elvis, despite all the funny, that I showed it to my grandmother, father, sister and brother-in-law. I had already showed it to my mom, and she loved it alot so she helped me talk my other family members into watching it on a visit. After it ended, I turned to my family to see how much they liked it, and my dad said, "what the hell did we just watch?!" My grandma sat there smiling, but I could tell she was perplexed about it. She got the jokes, and laughed at Ossie Davis' performance, but she didn't really get the weirdness. Somehow they missed the poignancy of some of it. It's a unique movie, but these same people didn't get The Big Lebowski when I showed it to them, either.

I was living in Nacogdoches, TX when the movie released. That is where the writer, Joe Lansdale, lives. They were doing a special premier at our theater and I just happened to be there watching another movie. I had no idea the premier was happening and hadn't heard of the movie at all. So I looked down the hall and saw Bruce Campbell standing in the hallway by the door of the auditorium it was playing in. I guess he was watching the audience. I instantly recognized him since I had been a fan of his earlier work like Brisco County Jr and Army of Darkness. So I walked up to him and shook his hand. He was very nice. Very surreal moment since it was completely out of nowhere.
