I will always remember Flatliners(1990) for its beautiful cinematography. The lighting and the timing of the shoot? You could almost smell the autumn air coming off Lake Michigan. Tremendous use of fall foliage sweeping across the ground. The use of the architecture at Loyola University. It's Joel Schumachers masterpiece.

A great movie to cover and certainly underrated. It's funny that Schumacher himself said that had he been allowed to direct a third Batman movie, he would have made it a proper dark film to make up for the fans' disappointment. Films like Flatliners, The Lost Boys and Falling Down prove he was definitely capable of just that. Of course, the studio executives told him to direct a toy commercial, so he's not fully to blame.
@promontorium

He had the experience to know what he was doing and Batman Forever was over the top stupid, only to be followed by Batman and Robin which was far worse. He didn't even reign it in a little. No way the studio said "make it worse".

Movie studios are the worst, heck it's the reason why we get butchered movies for years like Deadly Friend, Nothing But Trouble and many more. A studio is never pleased unless they get to change a film behind a person's back and or change a film's original and intended tone, Joel was not the reason for Batman Forever and Batman and Robin being so childish, it was the studio for wanting something child friendly so it'll be able to sell as much toys and merchandise. Just like another movie that happened recently *cough* Justice League *cough*

This was all warner bros fault for caving into the parents complaining about batman returns for being too dark and violent. I always loved the TV edit of the scene where Kevin Bacon's victim walks towards him in the subway. In the movie proper, the girl lets out the most unbelievable string of obscenities and insults this side of Full Metal Jacket. In the TV edit, all of that is cut out , and you get the impression that Kevin Bacon is absolutely terrified by a little black girl walking towards him.
@D-Fens_1632
4 жыл бұрын
I've made a minor hobby out of observing those tv edits and how they've changed over the years (for example they used to bleep out "kids suck" when showing The Goonies, they stopped doing that maybe 10 years ago). My all time favorite is probably the Die Hard movies. Specifically when McClane wears the racist sign in Harlem in part 3. They changed it to say "I hate everybody," which makes it really confusing why the mob of angry black dudes converges on him. Or at least it makes it seem like a huge overreaction. I mean they could have just made it say "I hate black people" and it would have worked perfectly. Or even a simple "white power." Instead they went the goofy route. Yippie Kai Yay, Mr Falcon.

The name was a play on the Rat Pack from the 1950's: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.

Flatliners was one of the first horror movies I saw in the theaters that I MYSELF wanted to see. I loved scary movies when i was a kid... but I remember they were all movies I learned from my cousins... return of the living dead, night of the creeps, lost boys, nightmare on elm street 3: dream warriors, etc.... all movies I loved, but all movies I remember learning through my older cousins (and mostly saw on VHS) flatliners though..... I remember watching the trailers on TV and wanting to see this movie badly!! it was 1990, I was 12... and NOBODY wanted to take me. I remember my cousins being like, "that movie looks like trash," and just laughing at me when I even brought it up. so... my friend and I sneaked in the old fashioned way, lol. I remember VIVIDLY!!! we bought tickets to 'problem child," and snuck into flatliners like 10 minutes into the movie. and sure enough... it became one of my favorite movies of all time. I've sense gone back to watch it again... i'm 42 now, a bit wiser and knowleged.... and yeah, the film is flawed - mainly the story and the ending. however, some scenes still reminded me of the chills I had watching it all those years ago. I also remember that I had nobody to bury my head into this time, lol. no more older cousins to laugh and remind me that it was only a movie... it actually added to the terror. it's still an underrated classic in my opinion, and I implore anyone who's not yet.. to please see it. it's a good time, and some really great performances too.

It apparently happens sometimes due to gass buildup or when moving the body and theres pressure on the diaphragm or some shit I dont even know. Creepy. Then theres the ghost stories ,weird shit coming from the morgue of a retirement community where she was posted as a chief nurse. Elevators coming up and down during graveyard shifts ,voices calling or asking questions but nobody was there ,equipment moving ... but you know this may all be just imagination due to sleep deprivation. I loved this movie, haven't seen it in years. I'm going to go looking for it. I'm so sorry that Joel Schumacher is dead, but he's left a legacy of truly amazing movies. Thanks for the tribute to him, and reminding me of such a good film.

Pitch meeting for the Flatliners remake: - "Hey guys. Do you remember Flatliners?" - "No." - "No." - "No." - "No." - "I think I vaguely remember it." - "No." - "Great! Let's tap into that nostalgia and make the reboot everyone's been waiting for!"

Very true about the film being thought provoking. I love this movie, and it's message. I always come back to it every now and then; come away from the movie wanting to be a better person; so message recieved 🤔 The use of lighting and the camerawork in the original is unmatched and has steered me FAR away from the remake. Minty briefly touches on the tension in the movie, but to me, it's my favorite thing about it. They raise the tension every time someone "goes under." The brain starts to die just minutes with no oxygen, so they risk also coming back to life and being catatonic for the rest of their days😮

Hey Minty always love your vids but I only watch the ones about flicks that I’ve seen already so I can relate to what you say, so it always kills me when you tell me to check it out. Anyway you rock and I always love trying to anticipate what the punch line is going to be. Cheers mate.

I think "St. Elmos Fire" 1985 is his most overlooked movie. R.I.P. Joel. All-Star cast too like "One Crazy Summer" 1985 , but were unknowns back then.

The characters in St. Elmo’s Fire are brutal to watch nowadays. I did enjoy it as a kid, but I watched it recently and absolutely hated everyone character in the movie.

I was 10 when this movie came out and in the past thirty years, I haven't bothered to watch it, even though it's subject matter is right up my ally. Thankfully for me I'm an avid Minty fan. I'm watching it tonight. I'll get back with you. Thanks again Minty.

Not one member of the Brat Pack was in this movie (Unless you count Joel for making "St Elmo's Fire") ...But it was definitely cashing in on their trend at the time.

I love a lot of Schumacher's movies and I appreciate that he took risks, which is how Batman came to be. It seems like few directors take risks anymore. Hence all the re-makes. I LOVE this movie. I think it was really unique and had good character development as well as good story telling and good camera work. A lot of art went into this film. It's still one of my favorites. I have it on VHS and will even hook up the VHS player to watch it sometimes.

@@davidjames579 that's a tough call I did like the original Swedish Language version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", and follow up movies that were based on "The Millennium Series" novels by Stieg Larsson, even though there was a number of things that were different from the novels The remake of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the roles of Michael Blomquist and Lisbeth Salander was a lot more like the novel, but still has a bunch of things that were totally different from the novel

Strange, but fun likely. My mom was a horror movie fan so I followed suit from a young age. At an older age it seems horror movies don't interest me much anymore. My personal thought is death is best observed when you're the most alive in youth.

You are correct. The original was filmed with better visuals and more of a gritty spooky feel, while the remake reminded me of a super bright and clean version of a Final Destination movie.
