@MinesAGuinness
Жыл бұрын
There is lots to like. I love the fridge scene! For me, I think the difference is not realism exactly but in the set-up and the execution. Throughout the first three films, the magical MacGuffin is identified and described very clearly from the beginning of the film. The films then continue with shenanigans and escaping or chasing Nazis, but we are pretty clear on what the objective is going to be. We are also broadly familiar with each chosen object of mystery, which have a mythological basis upon which to draw to suspend our disbelief. The Crystal Skulls have the disadvantage of being obvious and provable frauds - neither Mesoamerican in origin nor related to aliens. It was already fairly hokey and forced before the film was even made. Crystal Skull still begins fairly well with a set-up: we learn about the skull, and we learn from both hero and villain of its supposed psychic powers. So far, so good. But it really feels as if the creative team were not sure themselves what they wanted their film to be after that. Whilst the direction builds up the anticipation for an exploration through hidden Mayan temples, this is almost rushed through and forgotten as the script takes a dramatic turn and reveals that there is an actual alien inside and a flyer saucer - which then demolishes the site of this lost civilization. Neither location nor MacGuffin nor even the reveal are terrible per se. But I feel that they do not coalesce well together. Lack of clarity confused the story and the audience felt frustrated on first viewing. It would benefit from a single, clearer focus. If its an ancient Mayan relic, focus on the Mayan setting and the ancient civilization. Its the skull of their first high priest or a Mayan god, vital for their protection, much as with the Shankara Stones in the Temple of Doom. The villain has her mind melted in much the same way, although now the images she sees are of Mayan gods and rituals. Or... if its the skull of an extraterrestrial creature, base the main part of the film near Roswell, Area 51, or a base for the early space programme or atomic research - somewhere with a strong affinity with and aesthetic related to the 1950s era of UFOs, sci-fi, Sputnik, and the Cold War.

I was 17 when this movie came out, and it remains one of the few films I've seen in the theater TWICE. Both viewings, which occurred about three weeks apart, were packed to capacity, with lines around the building. The second of those times was with my maternal grandmother, just as she was beginning to slide into the dementia that took her from us four years later. So, I guess that's why I have an extra bit of sentiment towards it. There were a lot of funny quotes, and I remember thinking the shot of Indy in front of the mushroom cloud was so cool, even though I knew a person would never survive that in real-life. I also loved what I call the "B***h, please" moment at the end, where Shia is about to put the fedora on, as if he was taking up the mantle from his onscreen dad, and Harrison snatches it back from him almost immediately. I thought the crystal skull props were pretty, and they turned me on to this particular thread of history, as I'm sure the previous three films did for other people with their respective plot-lines. I've often felt like this movie is an example of what happens, when something becomes trendy to hate. One learns pretty quickly to either pretend to hate the person or thing at the center, or don't speak of it at all. You know that if you defend whatever's being hated on, you run the risk of some of that hate, turning on you. It's similar to the chance a kid in school takes when they try to protect a bullying victim, while so many others are egging the bully, him- or herself, on in some way. It builds and builds over time, becoming an echo chamber, and it's a cycle that keeps repeating in various forms. (6/1/2023)

To me it's definitely the 4th best, but I enjoy it as an Indy movie. I've never understood why people had a problem with the alien aspect. I loved the Russians as the new bad guys and I think the aliens fit with the atomic age setting. I have a feeling there will be a lot of people who jump on the Crystal Skull bandwagon after the release of Dial of Destiny. I like Crystal Skull. I don't think its perfect, but its far from the abomination the nerds claim it is. I think the story is good & engaging up until the ancient cemetery. After that (when they are captured), I think it kinda goes downhill, but I still enjoy the rest of it. There are some impressive things in it, like the University chase scene where Indy is riding on Mutt's bike, & he is pulled off into the car, he fights them off, & goes back onto the bike from the other window, all in one shot. I do like the early mystery elements like when they go try to find John Hurt's character, & of course, the intro to Indy at the start was great. I wasn't bothered by the fridge thing or the other stuff the nerds whine about. I do think Ray Winstone's character changes sides way too many times, & his demise is basically just the same as Benny in The Mummy. Its a decent film, & while it isn't as good as the originals, it is still far better than anything that came after Aliens (particularly Ridley Scott's awful prequels). Side note, I actually liked the second X-Files movie. I found it very atmospheric & I liked the mystery plot.

This may just be the christianity in me, but in the prior movies, something kept protecring Jones from certain death. Nearly every time he faced death, some obscure piece of knowledge or timely placed object would save him. Looking for the holy arc, the holy grail, or dealing with a more demonic entity cult, there was something that would always bring him back or drop in his lap to save him. Yes I know there was a small level of comedic timing to them all, but it sort of explains why and how he survived.

Fact: the school where Indy/Mutt were chased in was Yale in New Haven CT and the guy in the library was Chet Hanks (Tom Hanks son) and the lady who punch Mutt in the soda shop was Sasha Spielberg (Steven & Kate Capshaw’s daughter) Kate played Willie in Temple of Doom.

In connection with your mention of CGI use Minty, whereas you focused on the monkey swinging scene, I was always bothered by the ants scene, because in the original 3 they always used real animals (snakes in part 1, bugs in part 2, and rats in part 3). Granted, some rats were real and some were animatronics, but still practical. When they used CGI ants, that got on my nerves. I personally feel like Spielberg and Lucas have gotten lazier as the years have passed. In their early days of filmmaking, they never would have gone the easy route. Anyway, great video as usual sir. Thank you.

I don't feel the movie was that bad. I was a little disappointed when it came out, but I feel it gets better with time. And I feel that the subject of the movie resonate with the time period it's representing, just like it's prequals. So in that respect I actually feel it suits the Indiana Jones series well. 👍

when The Last Crusade came out, people thought exactly the same about it that what they think about the 4th movie, the difference between the 2? Internet wasn't around when Last Crusade came out. Back then, it wasn't the popular thing to do to just take a shit on anything, mostly because the "public toilet" that is Internet wasn't invented yet.

Nice one Minty, you know why you got a good hit count so far? Timing. Right now the new Indy movie is being talked about after the screening at Cannes. It's always a simple way of getting a higher hit count, release these types of videos when a new sequel is coming out etc. People always look at the previous movies in a series when a new one is about to be released. Keep it up brother! You rock!

I never understood peoples issues with aliens being in the film since the crystal skulls are a real life, controversial, archaeological thing. The mystical powers of the first 3 movies would seem to fit right in with the skulls mythos. For me, the movie lacks in some of its pacing. And of course, the believability on the fridge and monkey scenes. I think what really turns people off more than anything to the movie though is the way they tried to set up Shia LaBeouf as a potential successor for future movies. With a character as iconic as Indy, I just don’t think you can replace him to keep the franchise going, as much as they are going to try again with the next movie. I truly feel had they just let this be Indiana Jones out for one last adventure, maybe meeting his kid, but not necessarily having him tagalong, it may have been received much better.

I don't see it as any weirder than witch doctors removing hearts and the flesh closing back up. I think it kind of fits with the sort popularity of the ancient aliens stuff that was starting to get some traction back then. I guess clouds that look like skulls melting faces and 600 year old medieval knights hanging around tombs are more realistic?

Crystal Skull doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets. It’s a fun film that manages to capture a lot of the Indy hallmarks, even if it doesn’t quite match the first three. I enjoyed it then and still like it now.

Agree 100%. It wasn't what I was expecting when it came out, other than the year in which it was set, but I did enjoy watching it. George Lucas insisted on the aliens over Steven Spielberg's objections? I'd assumed the aliens were Spielberg's addition to the franchise. And I think Shia LeBeouf is a much better actor than he's been given credit for. He may have gotten his start in one of the worst sitcoms ever made, but he's also been in some truly great movies.

What bugged me most was in the end when Indy is trying to help Mac get out as they’re escaping and he wouldn’t stand up to leave-just lying on his stomach holding onto a rope/whip and Indy tells him to use his feet and instead just lies there saying it’s ok and the wind lifts him up like a kite and gets sucked away..he had plenty of time to just stand up and run! Personally, I would have just left him there when he fell and wouldn’t get up..

I honestly believe this was where it became the popular thing to hate everything online. Raiders is one of my all-time favorites. Temple of Doom was just ok. Holy Grail was as close to the original as we will ever get. I think a lot of people have just gotten to the point where instead of just enjoying movies simply to be entertained, they're always looking for something to bash. I actually rank Crystal Skull right there with Temple. And as far as the whole world going crazy over the aliens in the movie, the first moving had a chest that melted people. The second had a rock that could bring life to a village. The third had a cup that could make you immortal. I'm not sure why everyone jumped up and said that aliens weren't realistic....

Agreed ! Some very very talented fan editors re edited INDY 4 and made some changes. They got rid of that nuclear refrigerator scene AND the scene where John Hurt confuses a giant snake for A ROPE !!!! Gawd Almighty! The fan editors also brought back the classic John Williams music score from,, "' RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK."' The classic music score changes the entire tone of the movie ! The new title of this INDY 4 FAN EDIT is.... "'RAIDERS OF THE LOST SKULL."' Highly recommended!

I was the only person in my group of friends that liked Crystal Skull when we watched it in theaters. I loved it. It has it's issues but it's a great movie and feels like an Indiana Jones flick. I've always thought Temple of Doom was the worst movie out of the original trilogy. I feel it has way more wrong with it than Crystal Skull. That might be me because the topics and themes in Crystal Skull are things I have been into and studied myself.

Sure, it’s silly (then only scene that kind of bothers me is the swinging with monkeys scene), and I don’t think Shia LaBeouf wasn’t the best choice, but it’s a fun watch and Harrison Ford can do no wrong in my opinion.

Great job as usual. I liked the movie despite its faults and will watch this ahead of Temple of Doom (except for the opening). I particularly liked the ending where Indy's had blows off and LaBeouf reaches for it (Passing the touch) but Indy gets it first. "You just are not ready quite yet, kid." I have great fears about the new movie coming out soon. It just may make Chrystal Skull look like a great movie after all.

I like this movie, and you are right, it is not a WOW, but it is fun. This movie is based on nostalgia, to try to catch that feeling of awe when we watched any of the trilogy, it does not achieve that, but it is a fun ride. At least it has more sense than other franchises, like the Fast and Furious, which had become absurd and ridiculous.

I love this film, and have always defended and will defend it to the death. Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008) is not only a good ending to the film series, but also it steamrolls the majority of Hollywood garbage that passes for cinema today. I have no faith in the new film. On a small related note, I actually did not mind the monkeys and the gophers at all. They are both in the film for little over a minute and the CGI works for me. Speaking of the monkeys, given humans have not been in this part of the jungle for ages, I kind of got how they were in the film.
