The Street Fighter animated movie rocks and most of the fights were great, with only one or two that should have been longer. This movie on the other hand has its own charm to it that has only grown on people over the years. Yes, it is a bad movie, but it’s so bad it’s good kind of way. The real reason why the filmmakers made both this movie and Mortal Kombat PG-13 so they can make more money. But an R-rated version would be better, Ryu originally kills Vega by knocking his claws off (instead of laying down on the floor, they stand up) and then Ryu uses a Tatsu to knock him away and he lands on his claws like the spike-pit from MK.

The movie came out about 5 years after I got out of the USMC. It was a fun film. Not to mention it had Kylie Minogue, who everyone was in love with, and the gorgeous Ming-Na Wen. It also had my boy Peter "Navy" Tuiasosopo, who played E. Honda. Peter was an undrafted Rookie Free Agent signing for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987. He played Center for the LA Rams during the strike in '87. His cousin Manu Tuiasosopo was a Defensive Tackle for the Seahawks and 49ers. Manu's son Marques was an NFL Quarterback for the Raiders and Jets. His cousins Terry Tautolo and John Tautolo also played in the NFL. Quite the pedigree. You will have seen Navy in many things, including as the Janitor in the Disney series Kickin' It!

When the game went on global release they changed it thinking Tyson would take them to court either to sue them or demand royalties

This movie holds a special place in my heart. Street Fighter II is my favorite game of all time. Countless quarters and hours, then more hours on the SNES ports. I won three local tournaments back in the day when we actually had an arcade. I was 12 when the game came out, so I was in the age demographic for the movie release. It's one of the only times I actually paid for a pay per view so I could tape the movie. I remember not being blown away by the movie, but even at that age, I understood bringing a game to a film and I thought they got the spirit of it enough while trying to squeeze in some kind of story. RIP Raul Julia. He played a megalomaniac so well. I was saddened when I learned he had passed and the details later on involving the movie. He did it for his kids while he still could, what a gentleman. I still watch the movie from time to time and still play Street Fighter II on my SNES through a real CRT TV. I am a retro gamer, so it fits. Cheers to everyone that has ever popped a quarter in, or waited around for the local players to show them a move so you could jot it on paper and carry with you at all times. We didn't have move lists back then.

Thank you for your video. I think the genres are both just very different, but appear deceptively similar. If you think about it, how many times has there been a bad video game adaptation of a movie? ...and OH they've tried since TRON, many more times in that direction, because it was cheaper and potentially more profitable I imagine. What percentage of those attempts were good? Eh... I don't think this is a terrible movie. It's a niche action movie for kids and teenagers, or fans of the game/actors/etc., and it has a couple of good performances and a more or less 'plot'. If we think about it more deeply, books and movies lend themselves to adaptations because while like video games, they DO revolve around good characters, the two former rely on good storytelling to be good. Good/fun video games rely on good characters, sometimes, but the 'interactive' element is what makes them good... and as obscure as that can initially sound, go back to the beginning and think how fun Donkey Kong the movie would be? Pac Man the movie? Video games started by focusing on the interactive elements and adding repetitive increasingly difficult challenges to the player (oversimplification, but basically). Do that in a movie, and they're adding repetitive increasingly inconceivable challenges to the protagonist, and it becomes tedious, more intangible, and boring or too over the top to tell a realistic story. We want an element of realism in our movies and books, but not in our video games. Hence, there's a reason the crossover between those two genre seldom works.

If you embrace the camp, you can enjoy watching this movie as much as Raul Julia clearly enjoyed being in it.

Raul Julia is the best part about this movie. You could tell he was giving it his all and having a lot of fun with it, despite how awful the movie is.

No one else could have played Bison. His gaunt appearance at the time certainly makes his depiction more accurate.

Not sure about elsewhere in the world, but I do remember that most of the promotional stuff dealing with the Street Fighter francise at the time focused heavily on Guile and/or Chung Li. They were pretty much the public faces of the franchise over here. Perhaps it's what was cut from the movie to pair down the rating... Or just that it was a rushed project. Or both... And yeah, it's a cheesy mostly B movie, but some of that is intentional. What I've always loved is the part with them bracing for the impact of the truck, and Zangeif shouting "Change the channel!". The look the others give him is just priceless.
