First mod should be a rear wing. My father used to own an MR2 SW20 and we both agree that it looked better when it had a wing. Also, wider tires and different suspension/coilovers are mods I'd suggest
@ethimself5064

I had an 86 MR2 and as far as oversteer is concerned, such an easy fix that I learned earlier as a mechanic, this applies to and cars or trucks. Drop the front tire pressure by no more than 2 psi, or in combination, raise the rear 1 psi and drop the front 1 psi. My MR2 did have a slight oversteer and this fix had it running in any of my driving conditions as solid as a rock - I did not baby it whatsoever. This method always worked for me over decades with all of my vehicles. I also used stick Bridgestones which far out performed the sad Dunlops from the factory.

I have a 91 and I just have to say that the whole snap oversteer thing is bull. Last year I was hanging the rear end out in the snow/rain all the time and never had a problem. If you can drive, you don't have to worry.
@DamfinoMR2
6 жыл бұрын
Tried to get my 91 to snap on me and had no luck either. As a matter of fact, without the rear engine bay brace, it tends to slide easier which is what you want when trying to control your traction loss. If you lose traction and the rear is too rigid, then you will snap oversteer.

Nice video! Just some things to add (I own the MK1 MR2 and have owned several 2 litre Celica models) - The 154bhp 3S-GE (1990 to 1994) is a good engine but can use quite some oil because of bad valve seals (which are replaceable) - The 175bhp 3S-GE (1994 to 1998) is of much better quality. I owned a Celica with that engine and drove it up to almost 300.000km without any oil usage, and I wasn't easy on it. Without any breakdowns. - The 3S-GE is more common in Europe. In Europe we did not get the 5S-FE and others. - I think all MR2's need around 15 litres of coolant due too the front radiator and mid-engine. Yes getting the air out should be carefully done. Also the electrical thermal switch to turn on the electric fans might be broken and you won't notice it until your first trackday! (because you don't need the electric fans on the road) - Overall, the video doesn't name the general things of driving a mid-engine car. It is fantastic, and I don't think it gets any cheaper (also in therms of low running costs!) to drive a mid-engined car. But it can be dangerous enough. I mean, even if you have a later model it doesn't mean snap off oversteer doesn't happen. The weight distrubution is different (it isn't a perfect 50%) and if the car is going into oversteer, there is a lot of weight coming around where other normal RWD cars are much lighter at the back. - The 2.0 Turbo is obviously the fastest. And if you have the 245bhp 3S-GTE, it is easy to get it up to 300bhp. But then please stop because everything gets expensive beyond that point! - There are LSD diffs available, both original Toyota (I think the turbo gearbox) as well as aftermarket ones. - You haven't mentioned all the crazy people who do engine swaps to V6 engines! I mean, it is a good platform for it. Including the powerful 280bhp 2GR-FE engine, which is the same as in the Lotus Evora! So that allows you to create your own cheap Evora. When looking at the other generations: Both the MK1 and MK3 MR2's are much lighter than this MK2. So if you are looking for a lightweight racer instead of high power, the MK1 or MK3 would be better. But the MK1 is a rustbucket. (I know, I have one)

I've wanted one of these since I was about 12 years old. It's crazy to see how much prices for these vehicles in the US have skyrocketed. They're anywhere from 8k-26k now. I fear by the time I save enough for one they'll be running more in the 12k-30k range. Hell, by that time the only ones left for purchase may end up being ones exported from Japan...obviously not the most affordable or convenient option. I could potentially cave...RHD would be pretty neat to have. It would cost nearly 26-30k though when all is said and done!

It's interesting to hear that "earlier" (i.e. '93) cars suffered from snap oversteer. I owned an N reg MR2 so it would have been '95 MY and I managed to spin it twice. The second time I spun it 540 degrees and still didn't hit the side of the road. It spun like a top and only had 170BHP. It did turn in quite nicely though. I had it for about three years from new and always loved the look. It was a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing as it was nowhere near as fast as it looked but then I'd only been driving for a few years so that's probably just as well. After two and a half years my wife got pregnant so we swapped it for a 328i but I still remember how sad I felt to see it go.

Snap oversteer? Something you'll hear from people who have a heavy foot while lacking the driving skills then placed in a mid or a rear-engine car. Snap oversteer goes for all mid-engine and rear-engine cars. Let them drive an F355 or a 911 or maybe even a Miura (holy shit no not the Miura!) and watch them make the same mistake and will talk to everyone as though there's something wrong with the car. Pushing a mid or rear-engine car to the limit is best left for rally drivers.

guigui045 Weight is force. While kilograms are a unit of mass, pounds are actually only a unit of weight and not mass (weight varies with local gravity). So while yes kilogram-meters would not be a technically correct thing to use, "pound feet" are fine and a valid and accepted unit of torque.

***** In the US it's because the construction workers are just used to it. So materials are sold in imperial units because they're just used to it makes it easy for the workers. Also we use 1 gallons a lot and the equivalent metric wouldn't be as easily to monetize. If you're an engineer you'll use metric, that's for sure. For everyday talking we use imperial. Oh also some of our sports still use imperial, like American football is a 100 yard field, so it's something people easily can visualize. It's in all honesty, just something we're used to. I freaking hate measuring in imperial units (what we call standard here) since it's always in a fraction, drives me nuts. When I'm designing anything, I use metric since it's easier to work with for me.

John Kyon I think you're right. It's funny though, I think the name Miata is derived from some old german word meaning to gift or reward or something like that. Just spelled a little differently. I think it was Mieta.

111 111 It is a bit weird because for a name that isn't used anywhere but the US you'd figure there would be a bit more of an explanation or something that the US market could understand. We did get the MX-3 and MX-6, so it wouldn't be out of place if it was purely just called the MX-5 in the US. Plus it was a mouth full for US consumers to call it the Miata MX-5, so people just called it by it's first name given to us.

Why would you get an MR2 when you can buy a Pontiac Fiero? They are quite cheap, and they are also mid-engined with RWD. They also feature pop-up headlights. But the real kicker is that you will never have body rust because of plastic body panels.

Even the AW11 was better in everything except torque. If the MR2 never existed, we'd all be madly in love with the Fiero, and there are still a few really dedicated people out there, but the MR2 is just better in nearly every single way.

killerkon141 Looks are subjective and grip is largely limited by tyres.
@killerkon141

tires do have a lot to do with grip, yes, but the fiero (at least the '88) had a more advanced suspension design that didn't incorporate the macpherson strut. the MR2 has a slightly favorable weight distribution, but the wider track of the fiero kept it more planted and less prone to snap oversteer.

The MR2 chassis is very nice even stock, you still got to keep a memo somewhere in your head to remind you its rwd/rear engine so less forgiving if you screw up. It's not a slow car with the 3S-GE, the engine is volunteer and does the job, not sharp revvy angry 4A-GE but it pushes the car well. The final drive ratio could be a little bit shorter, it would help the engine quit a bit. I'm sure with some mods the MR2 SW20 could be really nice, I might buy one (some day) instead of an MX5 (sorry Alex :p)

I drive a Rev 3 turbo and an 89 MX5. Best of both worlds :D MR2 keeps me happy with 300bhp on tap and the MX5 wins hands down for chuckability and cornering confidence, you just need to respect the MR2 as a bit of a beast that needs to be tamed..

Oh forgot to say, the scary thing about owning this car for me is in traffic. Somtimes people can't see you because the MR2 is SO LOW and small by modern standards even on stock suspension, so i've been cut off alot of times, even modern civics and such look huge to this car and you sit so low they wont see you so be careful when changing lanes and such.

I had an '85 that I bought for $500. It was fun in the snow and got 40+mpg despite having 177,000 miles on it. After 6 months the clutch went and I was not only broke, the repair cost was more than the car was worth, so I just handed it over to the transmission shop.

Personally I know this will upset SW20 hardcore fans but... AW11>SW20. Superior suspension design, lighter, simpler, powerband as smooth as glass and no turbo to worry about, 4age so the aftermarket is aplenty and ITBs are inevitable, and while this one is personal.. I like how the 1st gen MR2 looks more. Looks like classic 80s toyota styling with all the sharp angles, mixed with a touch of lotus inspiration (beyond the suspension design, which was indeed designed with help from lotus). It's just a very unique car that we'll probably never see toyota make again.

I had a 93' 2.0L in Japan. By far the most booring vehicle I've ever driven. The T-tops were the coolest part, but leaked like crazy. I sold it for a 0.6L Kei Van, which was more fun to drive and more practical on maneuverability, gas, insurance, tax, and bike storage. I used to take the passenger top off the MR2 and have my mountain bike hanging out. I eventually sold that for a 91' GTO, you can still fit a full bike in the back of that... but only legless passengers.

One more thing worth mentioning is grip. Lots and lots of it. You won't break grip when accelerating like you do with front engine cars. I own rev3 turbo and nothing but love past 6 years.
