Have you ever broken any of these rules? Were there any we missed? Let us know 👇

Frankly, if I got disqualified for holding my friend's hand, or banned for life for honestly just trying to pass my number on after an injury or other "act of god", I don't think I'd want a medal or to even race with these organizations. I've yet to do my first "Ironman", but from the disgusting way the organization has treated their athletes these past two years, it probably won't be an Ironman™

I’ve littered on course before. I took a banana from an aid station which squished in my hand as I took it. I had no choice but to throw it, and my bike got covered in mashed banana 😯

I have just checked the Ironman Rules on the website. "Athletes may not use communication devices of any type, including but not limited to cell phones, smart watches, and two-way radios, in any distractive manner during the Race". This does not mean Form goggle are not allowed. You can even use a smart Helmet, (Not sure there is such a thing). Can we go into better detail on this rule?

I'm quite confident that the vast majority of "middle of the pack" triathletes have drafted in 70.3 and full distance races, its literally impossible not to, especially when the course is laps.

The "no augmented reality goggles" is a new one for me. I don't have Form goggles yet but wont invest in a pair if I'm not allowed to race in them. Also does not make much sense. Speedopeter and powermeters are allowed on the bike and smartwatch everywhere...

A note on this old post: I just looked through the latest IM rules and couldn't find this. So Forms should be fine in IM races.

I drafted and passed in a no passing zone at the Boulder 70.3, but there were no judges that far back in the pack and no one else seemed to care about the rules so I just went with it.

On my first Olympic distance triathlon I forgot my water bottles and the race was in summer. Since the bike leg at one point ran nearly in front of my house, before the race I called my wife and asked her to grab a bottle and hand it to me when I got there. Didn't get a penalty, but anyway I'd rather have a minute or two penalty than bonk later in the race, I'm not a pro and was not racing for a PB but to enjoy on my first Olympic triathlon. Anyway I always read the rules of the race, even on races that I do each year. Sometimes there are changes, for instance last year the race number was not required on the bike, but starting this year is. Also briefings are important, there may be last minute changes that will be explained on the briefing only.

I guess I've violated the "don't bare your torso" rule every single time I've raced. But I'm only doing age group races in Florida, so I don't think anyone cares. I'm usually in just tri shorts and there's always a few dudes still rocking speedos, which I believe was pretty common in the early days of the sport.

One thing most people don’t know is that in most USAT refereed races, there is absolutely no warning or notification for penalties on the bike. So you could effectively get a penalty but not be told and then a few minutes later get the same penalty and possibly a DQ.

Forgot to mention Ironman does not allow for any form of headphones, phones or camera recording. A rule I was so tempted to brake in IronMan Austria so that I could document my first full distance race. I’m still sad I didn’t brake it when I saw that honestly nobody would’ve noticed.

It is not only an iron man rule. It is also a rule for all DTU (German Triathlon Union) races. I assume it applies almost everywhere in the world. The idea behind it is safety. You must not be distracted by any electronic devices or music in your ears, in order that you can hear and see instructions by referees and race staff. So i think it was better that you did not stop for documentation. You would have risked disqualification.

I just pulled up Ironman Arizona since it's the next one up around here and I'm not seeing any rules on IM where it mentions goggles with data, like FORM. Where is that rule listed?

Last year i have broken a rule from which i did not know that it even exist. It seemed that most of the referees do not know it either. At least in Germany it is so that a team needs to wear a uniform suit (the same identical look), so that you can identify them as a team. For my first race with a team scoring after lockdown i did not wear my team suit, because during lockdown i have gained too much weight. A team mate of my who was doing a course for a referee license at that time, told me about this rule. But at least no referee cared about this during the race and i do not know how they could check it!?

Is music allowed in the run? On the bike I know it is not allowed (and it makes sense) but on the run I never understood, because in the rulebooks it often they don't mention it at all, or say "not allowed on the bike".

I read somewhere about a guy racing in a sports bra because of the rule about “no bare torso.”He looked silly but he didn’t get disqualified. 😁 Also, about the suits, is there a reason with the bottom/shorts is black and blue as opposed to a single color?

Haha love the thinking outside the box with the sports bra! I’d say the blue and black shorts is a consideration for modesty :).

@@eagleironic5815 I get that the shorts are for modesty but I am still not convinced. The triathlon suit of Anne Haug is also for speed and I like that design better. However, I get everyone has a different style.

The penalty I have given out the most is not a "drafting" penalty, but the "pacing" penalty where a spectator is biking or running alongside an athlete...

Someone got a DQ for overtaking about 30 bikes and jumping a red light in the no passing/timeout zone in this year's Slateman. There was no reason for him to do it as the clock was paused in that section due to roadworks. It was only about 10 minutes from T1, he must have been gutted, but deserved it.

A few years ago, I was new to the adult triathlon scene (15yrs old). I was on the bike and didn't realize I was too close to guy in front of me. One of the guys in the pro race rode past on his second lap and screamed at me for drafting. I didn't get a penalty tho so all good.

Drafting in amateur racing needs to be policed a lot better. People draft me all the time and get away with it. In one race someone was right behind me and I shouted to the marshal to get their attention and no penalty was given

I didn't wear kit under the wetsuit during my first IM and didnt know they had assisted de-suiting at transition. I was too delirious to warn anyone and can still see the look of shock on the young volunteer girl's face when my junk sprang out as she forcefully yanked my wetsuit off. Everyone else laughed.

The bared torso rule and the sleeveless top rule are so dumb. Why introduce further barriers to the sport? Not only for more clothing purchases, but in a non wetsuit swim why make it harder for men who are inexperienced swimmers? They surely can't come up with a non arbitrary reason it's okay to unzip all the way down on your back but not your front as well. Not to mention men in speedos is the history of the sport haha.
