Another major factor was probably the bystander effect. The likelihood of being help decreases drastically when around a group of people, because everyone expects somebody else to step in and do something. This is why it's so important to direct your communication towards an individual; it makes it far more difficult to diffuse the responsibility of helping onto another person. Group psychology is both fascinating and unsettling.

Also for the fact that in many europian countries there are actually outside of airports/hotels etc a lot of unofficial taxi and they will come near and ask because that is the only way they get a chance to get near to a possible client not having the classic yellow car or whatever. And usually they charge you half of what an official taxi's will charge you or at least still way less depending on the place etc. Of course with that it comes less security nor am I suggesting it but I'm just saying in a lot of places is very common, I've tried myself many times, alone or not since at the moment I couldn't see classic taxi's.

The scariest airport story I have was leaving Shanghai flying to JFK in New York. I was flying China East airlines. As I sit down in the window seat towards the back I notice the flaperon ( the middle wing flap) I notice it's pointed down at the runway and two black streaks running down each side of the flaperon (indicating that the hydrologic oil had leaked out completely and the flaperon will not work) Being a aviation archeologist I know aircraft and spacific parts and what they do. Now you can fly a plane without a flaperon functional but it's much harder especially in turbulence. I inform the stewardess of the situation as everyone had settled into their seats. She says in a heavy Mandarin accent "it's ok sir were ok it's not a worry" I say no really we kind of need that you need to tell the captain so it can be fixed, matter of fact how in the hell did the ground crew not see that giant flap pointing towards the ground. She repeated " it ok sir". At this point we start to taxi and now about the 50 people that can hear us start to look out the right side windows and begin to worry. At this point she makes an announcement for everyone on the plane to close the window shades. As we pick up speed I open the shade partially only to see the flaperon bouncing up in down and just closed the shade and prayed all 16 hours back to JFK. Needless to say I will never fly China East airlines again.

I experienced something similar to the last story, I think. It was reminded me of this at least; One day, I drove my mother to work, but on the way there we visited her mother at a nursing home nearby. When I walked in the front door, of the nursing home a man walks up to me and starts talking to me, holding his han on my shoulder, he sees my short hair and comments it, he likes how it looks. He says he has seen me on televison plenty of times (I have never been on television) He talks to me like he has known me for years, the thing is, I have never seen this man, ever. After maybe 2 minutes he walks away and start talking to somebody else. I quickly follow my mother up the stairs to the 2nd floor to never see the man again.

one summer my dad worked farther up north than usual and we had to take a plane to go see him. It was small and nothing fancy though the free airline chips made everything a little better. I had fallen asleep while looking out the window. I forgot to mention how tightly packed the plane was as it is very relevant. The seats were so close together that you couldn't reach more than half your arms length to the next seat. The walkway was just big enough for the flight attendant's cart to go through without bumping into the seats. As I was falling asleep drool and all, I felt my hair being played with. I didn't register and didn't give a shit if they played with my hair so long as wasn't pulled and let me sleep. I woke up at the end of the flight and get up to get off the plane, I absent mindedly thought about my hair. I looked around and can't see who sat behind me as I was one of the first few people to stand up. Thinking it over, I shrug it off and get out of the cramped space. I don't know who was behind me and feel a bit paranoid for obvious reasons.
