Close. My elementary was ‘60s and High School ‘70s. But agree with all comments here: great songs and great memories. I never worried about the critics reviews. In fact, I never knew they existed. I figured if the radio station played them, that was all the critique needed. Our youngest son worked at our state university’s radio station (2011-2013) and they were not allowed to play pop or current commercial bands or songs. But some of the indie songs they played ended up as current day commercial music.

Not bad. For me, My Sharona is forever linked with DJ Steve Dahl's "Ayatollah" a parody recorded during the Iran Hostage Crisis. Can't help it, my mind just goes there automatically (Man you got a real nice beard, a real nice beard, you know it really caught my eye atollah). I used to enjoy listening to Stuck In The Middle until I saw Reservoir Dogs. That scene is just too messed up, even for a Tarantino film. Spirit in the Sky rocked. Everyone liked that one. I can forgive a few of these for being considered "one-hit wonders" even if there was a follow-up but only if the follow-up didn't really achieve any Top 40 success; after all, if it was good enough for Casey Kasem to play on his "AT 40" show (based on the "Top 40" of Billboard's Hot 100 chart), it should be enough to keep the artist from being a "one-hit wonder." #2: Blue Swede may be *best-known* for "Hooked on a Feeling" but they followed up with a Top 10 cover of the Association's "Never My Love" (using the same high-energy style). A point that was missed here: Jonathan King, who introduced the "ooga-chaka" bit on his cover, was a one-hit wonder in the US in the 1960s (his only US hit was a song called "Everyone's Gone to the Moon"). #3: Okay. Gonna call this one out as nonsense. The Knack had TWO more Top 40 hits after "My Sharona": "Good Girls Don't" (#11--and a concurrent Top 40 chart hit with "My Sharona" for 7 weeks in 1979); and "Baby Talks Dirty" (#38 in 1980). #4: Despite my initial "AT40" defense, I might be willing to let Looking Glass slide here since their only other Top 40 hit ("Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne") came more than a year after "Brandy" and only made it to #33. #8: Missed a far more important "fun fact": The Jim Peterik of the Ides of March in the performance is the same guy who would help form the band Survivor at the end of the 1970s and would co-write both "Eye of the Tiger" (from "Rocky III") and "Burning Heart" (from "Rocky IV")--it's just too bad he didn't also serve as lead singer on the two songs. #9: Actually, Redbone had made a Top 40 impact two years earlier with "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" which had its own little super-funky kind of "ooga-chaka" moment ("Marie, Marie, la voodoo Veau/she'll put her spell on you"). The song may have only reached #21 in the US but it went to #2 in the UK (a couple of months before its US peak) kept from the top by Rod Stewart's "Maggie May." And #10: Stealers Wheel also charted a year later with a song called "Star" which reached #29. Another "Fun Fact" (and really, who doesn't know about the song's use in "Reservoir Dogs?") is that the song was produced by the legendary team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the same guys who wrote classic songs like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock" (both famously performed by Elvis Presley) as well as "Yakety Yak" and "Poison Ivy" (among many for the Coasters), "There Goes My Baby" and "Stand by Me" (both co-written with Ben E King).

Number 1 . I do not know what happen in the states but 2 of those artists had more than one hit as I am from Australia and we get a lot of stuff that comes from the UK in which Pilot and David Essex are from .

BEACH BABY by the group FIRST CLASS. Came out in '73 or '74. Anytime I, now, hear STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU, I think of a certain scene from the movie RESERVOIR DOGS.😮😮😮😮

The Knack also recorded "Good Girls Don't (But I Do)" which was controversial in the Midwest.

You somehow missed one of the biggest one-hit wonders of the 70's or ANY era--Baby Come Back by Player. It could replace almost any song on this list. On another note, my older brother knew the guys that started Looking Glass and wrote Brandy. They were classmates at Rutgers University.

I've always assumed most of the "critics" were just failed wanna-be rock stars, failed musicians, or failed songwriters. Somebody felt the need to criticize a record like "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)"?? PUH-LEEZ!

Some Favorite One-Hit Wonders : 1) My Sharona; 2) Vehicle; 3) Do Ya Know What Mean (by Lee Michaels). (Note: #3 was not discussed, but it's a great one-off record that's so energetic, super catchy, with a stripped-down sound that reminds me of a demo. And yet I can't imagine it sounding any different).

Many of these “negatives” that mentioned, seem almost like they’re trying to make up something negative. I never heard anybody criticize “My Sharona” or “Brandy” nor “Spirit in the sky” etc: No one would say that the song spirituality is too light hearted. For a second, I thought he was gonna say that people complain because the guy who wrote that song was was not Christian.

Hi from England. Most of those (possibly all) were hits here too. Pilot, David Essex and Stealers Wheel had other hits in Europe - maybe others too. Spirit in the Sky was influential - Alvin Stardust's 1973 hit My Coo-ca Choo is very similar musically.

'Stuck in The Middle With You'? Dude. The guy in the song is so stoned he's afraid to fall off his chair? Can't find the stairs? C'mon man; Political correctness is bad enough and you added another layer.
