An overlooked thing about undead is they actually use equipment to attack not like claws so you can for instance give them poison weapons, custom homemade explosive arrows, traps/caltrops, armor, possible even magic items that don't require attunement.

The first time any tribe of barbarians or pack of kobolds sees one of their dead friends rise up and attack them mid-battle with the PCs at the necromancer's command, they tend to panic. Hard.

I’ve played a necromancer to level 20 before, here are some of my best tricks: - use geas on the wights made by create undead in order to have them charmed into being subservience without continued spell slot commitment (charm condition is NOT mental domination, it only grants adv on social checks and immunity from harm for the caster. The damage from geas and an appropriate deal, usually the promise of continued slaughter, are required). - if you play a yuanti, you can use cloudkill to obscure you and your undead horde as you march towards the enemy ranks - keep in mind that undead can use their hit dice on short rests to heal! - skeletons can do simple tasks such as manning the sails, oars and cannons of ship - buy a cannon and a wagon; then use skeletons to fire the cannon rapidly - get the mold earth cantrip to rapidly excavate graves or slightly bury your undead in preparation for an ambush - remember that skeletons have proficiency with martial weapons, feel free to have them pick up better gear from fallen foes. You can also have them equip an off hand weapon and make use of their bonus action - you can use magic mouth to let your undead ‘speak’. This works for message delivery, distractions, setting off chained events, giving adv on intimidation checks, etc - you can have your undead lift up barricades with handles that grant full cover (i recommend investing in a good land vehicle to carry a lot of things) - have your undead all wear the same clothes as you in order to confuse enemies

In a one shot that I ran, the players were high level kobolds returning to their warren to find a group of adventurers standing around the corpse of their dragon overlord (viewed as a god by them), one of the NPCs was a necromancer and had tasked the zombies in his service, as well as the ones he had just made out of the members of his party that didn't survive the encounter, with swallowing all of the gems they could find in the hoard, with the intention of cutting open the stomachs to retrieve them once they had made it back to civilization and using the money from that to hire a team to bring carts and tools to properly loot the hoard, which included a massive(!) topographical map, made entirely of gold and gems, depicting the land around the area that the dragon considered his territory.

My favourite use of Animate dead is to amass a large labour force and use magic mouth necklaces to give them timed commands to assure the machine is running smoothly. Morbid mining inc. Was one of the best times I had in a downtime heavy campaign. It's the best when you have a DM who leans into the idea and let's you have fun, like casting speak with the dead to learn about your "employees" proficiencies, so you maximise production or resource gathering

One of my favourite uses was to give them in trade for things to bad merchants. I'd point out the benefits of an untiring slave and use them as a deal sweetener. I'd give them false pass phrases and whatnot to control them. Then, I'd leave. After 24hr the undead does not die, but becomes feral. The DM would occasionally give us updates in the form of tavern rumours about bad merchants being murdered by zombies. I saw it as conscientious murder hoboing.

In early game, zombies are fairly strong. Not amazing, but strong enough. Id just grab everyone with them. I'd send my boys in for a tackle/grapple combo. One would run in and tackle them to the ground. The next would grapple them. Sometimes only one would work, but when both worked, it was wonderful. (For those uncertain, shove can make a creature go prone. It takes half a creatures movement speed to stand up. If grappled by another creature your movement speed is reduced to 0. It takes a creatures action to get out of a grapple by succeeding at a str contest. And whilst prone str tests are at disadvantage. Whilst prone, melee attacks are also at disadvantage. So zombies can take a bit of killing.) It's a little bit cheesy, but, I'd only really get that attempt once per encounter. And the necromancer is the king of negative status ailments. So it felt very reasonable to do.

A grapple a day keeps the baddies at bay. This is an awesome use! I'd be slightly mad as a DM, but I'd be more proud of that creativity than anything else 🤣

@@DumbestDnD my DM understood. I was playing a very obnoxious noble woman. She had a sort of "don't touch me, you'll make me dirty" vibe about her. So it was very within character for her to do that and let the rest of the party do their work. Also, doing it this way, my zombies didn't really roll for any attacks, so it kept my turns short. And I think the DM just started throwing in a bad guy "red shirt" just to keep the zombies entertained. It was fun.

@@Alex-on-youtube Unless it's a home rule, prone only gives disadvantage on attacks, not on strength or athletics checks; You can give it with the Hex spell though. Still a solid combo and to take it a step further having more than one thing grapple someone means that they need to break free of more than one grapple to get their movement back, pretty nasty against anything that doesn't have one of the easy ways out of grapples like teleports, forced movement, Freedom of Movement etc.

How do monster proficiency work? Can you just equip a zombie with plate armor and a greatsword and expect it to go to town? Or would it have disadvantage on everything cause it's both wearing arms and armor it's not prof with?

Are you sure you didn't just take this video Idea from my DoMM run? I even referred to my 8 skeletons as my "Bone Brigade" gave them all long swords and long bows because it was an AL game and couldn't do plus weapons. I stopped at 8 for a few reasons 1.DM started to get concerned even with me using them as a single target unit 2. The harassment by the PCs for having them as a Cleric. (players were fine with it because I always knew what I was going to do so I was faster than most of them on my turn) 3. I had everything color coded so I could quickly roll and total but much past 8 became difficult to resolve concurrently so I capped myself at 8.

@@DumbestDnD OH, I know, I saw the cameras there, there and over there. 🤣 Seriously though, one of the fun things when we went into towns I had the brigade put on grey robes and I told everyone that I was escorting Monk's from my order to (insert city several days/months away) and as they all took a Vow of silence for the order to address any conserns with me. This minimized issues in towns.
