I feel like _everyone_ in The Last Of Us forgets about the notation that... Ellie wasn't the first they got ahold of. And everyone before Ellie they had their mitts on. DIED. It's an audio diary you can find in the hospital. It's a missable, optional thing, but absolutely it's canon that Ellie wasn't "the only one that could be saved" and she's not "the only one that could create the cure to save us all"... She's entirely the "maybe she'll be the one that works out. We'll kill her to see if we're lucky." And then when she's dead and it's nonviable because it was always a low chance. You just killed a girl for a chance that didn't pan out. Nah fam, I side with Joel here.

100%. The Fireflies wanted to kill children on the OFF chance they could successfully save the world. They were desperate and lashing out. Joel was a terrible person but he did the right thing. Ellie was the only hero in The Last of Us and the story is as much about her disillusionment as anything else. Joel is an anti-hero at BEST, and the Fireflies have basically gone insane after succumbing to the pressure of the apocalypse.

Watch_Dogs had a feature where you could shot officers in the knee and they would go down, you got negative notoriety but the officer was still alive. Watch_Dogs 2 removed that and when you shoot them in the leg, its just a typical video game reaction. Why remove that? Also I'm just gonna say it, I enjoyed Watch_Dogs 1 more than 2. "Joel is the bad guy because he dooms humanity..." Maybe I'm misremembering this, but the idea through most of the game was that Ellie was some unique living cure... Then you find out that there were others before her, that ended up just getting dissected, dying, and having nothing worth while come from it, because the Fireflies are essentially inept and not equipped to even reach a cure.

Having played and loved the Last Of Us series (both 1 & 2) I feel these games a horribly misinterpreted, even to a degree by their own developers. Joel is NOT entirely the villain. First, I would say that his decision to save Ellie was not a result of him wanting a daughter again, but after having bonded with her along the journey as we humans are prone to do, he want at least to provide for her to have a life like he was unable to have done for his own daughter. This is a choice that is difficult for any human being to recognize fully, as is exemplified by the cutscenes in the sequel. As the doctor, who we now know was Abby's father, was proposing to operate on Ellie the second in command is questioning his morality in basically murdering a 14 year old save the world. Mayan Sacrifice much? She even proposes to the doctor, what if it was his own daughter, could he sacrifice her. To this point, Abby, who overheard the conversation, walked in and let her father know she would be willing to sacrifice her self. But that's just it. NOBODY ever gave Ellie the choice. The doctor didn't have a "heart to heart" with Ellie before the operation. The fireflies didn't sit Joel and Ellie down and tell them, "Yes, we can create a vaccine, but Ellie will likely not survive the operation." We know as the gamers, that Ellie absolutely would have offered herself up, but in the moment, without that element of choice, Joel had every right to defend her against the Fireflies who were bent on human sacrifice. However, through his actions, he also denied Ellie the choice. So, in the end, Joel is neither hero nor villain, but the Fireflies are no better. They are all murky, human, shades of grey in a circumstance than no-one can hypothetical their way out of, and Ellie is the unwitting victim of their actions. She alone must bear the knowledge that she could have saved humanity, but was never given the choice one way or the other. Like Shakespearian tragedy, at the crucial junction, all the adults in the room failed her.

How about this: often in video games with loads of collectibles, you can often find audio logs or written notes that give some extra backstory about the world. Sometimes you find a series of collectibles that tell a super interesting story about a minor character, that's almost better than the main character's story. How about "10 best minor(collectible) stories that are more interesting than the main story" For example: Ish's story in The Last of Us, the crew members notes of the going ons in Sevastopol Station, or even some of the vault stories in Fallout.

I wouldn't classify Joel as a villain. Kidnapping and murdering a child, even for the greater good (and with no grantee it would even work), is still a pretty horrific thing to do. Add to that the sheer cowardice of not even asking Ellie what she would want, and I would as soon let humanity die, than allow us to be saved via blood so cruelly spilt. I don't deny Joel was selfish, but neither do I accept the Fireflies as any less monstrous. And before you try to contradict me, go to a parent, and ask which of their children they would willingly offer as a blood sacrifice to save mankind. Frankly, this decision is only easy if you've either never had kids, or you aren't self aware enough to realize the kind of sacrifice you are asking for.

Ik I'm super late but this is such a blanket statement becuase there's literally no way of knowing and I doubt they would've failed had they attempted it. Hell even in the second game which is better and makes more sense becuase Joel deserves to die for literally dooming the rest of humanity. They address the fact that they feel like it was a sure fire method. So I doubt they'd write it that way if it wouldn't have worked. Joel had what was coming. Don't be a psycho and shoot random people for literally no reason.

@@SirRavixofFourhorn 1. The FFs hire Joel to smuggle Ellie out of town to meet with their people. Those FF all get themselves killed before Joel gets there. 2. Joel and Ellie go to the University to meet up with the FFs again. The University is abandoned because the FF are too incompetent to hold ground. 3. They get to the FF compound and the "scientists" there decided to immediately kill Ellie and extract her brain. No tests first, no attempt to make a cure from antibodies or anything logical. Just kill the golden goose and hope for the best. The FFs prove over and over that they have no idea what they are doing. I don't care if they try to retcon things in the second game, the fact remains that there is no evidence in the first game to imply the the FFs were at all in the right. Should Joel have killed the doc to prevent them from coming after Ellie? Probably not. His logic isn't very sound. Should he have lied to Ellie? Definitely not. Lying to people to protect them from the truth is both shitty and stupid. There are thousands of examples of that tired trope going wrong. So did Joel do nothing wrong? No, he definitely messed up, I was being hyperbolic. But should he have let the FFs butcher Ellie in their ham-handed attempts to make a cure? Absolutely not.

I love the Uncharted games a lot, but Nathan Drake kinda fits the mold of this topic, the man is basically a thief with a crippling addiction to treasure hunting (so much so that it tears his marriage apart) who kills thousands of men per game, a fact that Lazarevic brings up during the end of Uncharted 2. Every game basically starts with Nate plotting to steal some treasures and then gets caught up in a story bigger than himself, just like the vault hunters from Borderlands. He is a fantastic character and protagonist though, and the games are pure gold.

Not to mention that when people say Joel doomed "humanity" they think of our current one and not the in-game one. In the game most humans that you come across are hunters and thief's who kill other survivors, right to the point where Tommy's settlement was deemed rare by story standards. Remember, this is the world where zombies attacked, everyone possibly lost someone to the infection and have the "lone survivor" mentality for the most part. Joel's decision to save Ellie is selfish by our standards because we judge it from the perspective of someone who lives in a functioning society and hasn't experienced the things Joel did. What Joel did is save one person he cared about in a dying world from people who wanted to harm her against her will (she hasn't consented to do the operation). Is he a villain, or just a person that is screwed constantly by the harsh world he lives by? Not to mention that we as players were tipped that Joel isn't a goody 2 shoes character from the start of the game. He does what it takes to survive in his world.

I have an awesome idea of a list for you to do, one of "characters who were so back-stabby on previous meetings that you can't believe that you gave them another chance afterwards." I'm sure that you can find a way to shorten the title, and some obvious spoiler warnings for those who might feel compelled to read this comment, but some characters that are definitely in the running would be Dr. Samuel Hayden from 2016's Doom and Doom: Eternal, Goro Akechi from Persona 5 Royal, Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia, Ada Wong from the Resident Evil franchise, and Tom Sheldon from the Just Cause franchise (just to name a few.) I think it's a list that you could have a lot of fun with.

I never understood how it would have been a good idea, in the Last of Us, for them to simply kill Ellie and take her brain out. It made a lot more sense to me to be running tests on her blood. It seemed to me like killing her would have been wasteful and more likely to doom humanity.

It's basically every game that gives you the freedom to murder every enemy on the way to get the final boss. Like Assassins Creed where you just kill mercilessly every guard on the way to your goal. That "there can be no witnesses when there's no one to witness"

I've now seen a couple of these where Joel (The Last Of Us) is said to be purely selfish for saving Ellie, but none say that The Fireflies had already put several people under the knife in the hope of finding a cure, and all had died, or that Marlene of said Fireflies, was supposed to be looking after Ellie and was ready to turn her over in the search for a cure which, it is suggested, will not be found. Fair play to Joel I say.

I always loved Joel. He might try to redeem himself by saving Ellie but he has always been a villain. Remember when he spotted the bandit's trap? He said he's been in both sides. Meaning he has been one of the many bandits you have killed. He is not a hero not a good person. He is a survivor and if that means killing innocents I bet anything he will do it.

Fireflies think that murdering a child will lead to a cure. IT WON'T! Joel was protecting Ellie from murderers. He's the hero. Period. I never thought the Fireflies even had a remote chance at finding a cure. They were zealots and should be put down for murdering people for no reason. Joel is a good person; he just needed Ellie to bring that out in him.

Lately I have felt like a right prick playing Watch Dogs 2. The villain is bad, bud I am even worse! I have unlocked the ability to call the cops AND the gangs on people. On my recent play-through, I drove my car into the city center, turned off the engine an called the cops on an innocent guy, where they were told that he was a suspected terrorist. 10 seconds later, I called the gang on another innocent person and made him out to be a snitch - and hell ensued. Innocent people dead. Cars blown up. And it was absolutely fantastic!

In defence of Joel, I'm pretty sure it's mentioned at one point that there were others like Ellie in the past who were also immune and also ended up on the operating table but they all died, others have had their brains scooped out "for the greater good" but there's still fungus zombies so clearly they ain't had no breakthroughs so far! What if they yanked out Ellie's head-guts and it was a "damn back to the drawing board folks, those of us still alive will start fresh on Monday"? So while him shooting the unarmed doctors definitely wasn't cool in Joel's defence there was no real guarantee they were gonna get it right _this time_ no matter what that Firefly lady said! Thanks for another awesome vid Jules 💙🐱💙 (Can I suggest "Times you were rewarded for being a bro in Video Games"? Like when you did something nice for a certain NPC and they repaid you in a big way? Like the Dog helping Leon in RE4? He/She only shows up if Leon helped him/her first back at the start of the game and if you did then this Best Boi (or Girl) pops up to save Leon while he's fighting that giant-ass "Nope!" Boss!)

Jules did you completely miss that the little science experiment on Elly was never going to work as well as the fact it was going to kill her? They had found several people who were immune and did the same with them. Killing every one with no success. So... No... Joel is not a villain for that.

Commander Shepard renegade path. You can cause the extinction of four races, gun down several of your former teammates, shoot hostages, let innocents burn, etc. the list goes on. If that isn't bad enough you can take control of the reapers in the end and take over the galaxy. Meaning not only do you cause genocide on a galactic scale and doom four races to extinction but you actually win in the end.

I've NEVER thought that Joel was doing the wrong thing in TLOS. The Fireflies were killing her for a *chance* at a cure, not a guarantee. This game is realistic enough that I feel justified in looking at real world analogues, and the fact is there was a very high chance she would die just to add a tiny bit of data to their charts. Furthermore, keeping her alive means she might pass on her immunity. I'd love an actual virologist's/immunologist's input, but it feels to me like her immunity being hereditary is more likely than it being derivable in a single try from post-apocalyptic tech.

10 times the struggle just wasn't worth it... For example, getting ultimate weapons that weren't as good as the pre-ultimate, beating Ruby Weapon for a gold Chocobo, leveling up a skill that was ultimately worthless (looking at you AC ODYSSEY and your scan skill), completing Terminator Salvation on hard just to earn 12 gold trophies and a platinum (totes not worth it but you know I did it anyways), playing Homefront: Revolution... At all... Seriously, why was that game even a thing!? You get the jist, you big ledge!

Killzone. The ISA might be the protagonists, but deep down its the Helghast we sympathize with. They were forced off their home planet and exiled to a death world which mutated them, which caused them to unite under a dictatorship, then lost the war they fought to regain their hold home, then got their capital nuked, THEN got their planet depopulated by a secret weapon.
