Regarding motorbike rental, and any other situation really, you should avoid handing over your passport to someone. There are motorbike shops that will take cash deposits or if you're going to be there several months, buy a bike. Once you hand over your passport, you put yourself in a really bad spot. If you've handed over USD $200 deposit on a bike the worst that can happen is you're out $200. Not being able to get your passport back becomes a much more complicated situation.

In short , the the country itself is a "scam". The one and only country in south east asia exists only because of scamming foreigners in different ways! Vietnamese think foreigners are gold diggers, the first thing that comes in their mind when seeing foreigner is how they can ripp off them or how can they take advantage. This is absolutely horrible and I've experienced several times when I used to live there. Apart from that vietnam has a great landscape may be the reason why more travelers are attracted. This is the one and only thing which can be considered as a good thing about this country. And it's a good platform for so called expats who are scumbags in their own countries and they can get a comparatively "better life" in vietnam as "english teachers" and easy immigration procedures.

Wow, that's very smart! First time I've heard of this method to thwart the scammers. Just wonder if anyone has tried it that actually worked in real life. After a couple visits I still love Da Nang Vietnam. I started using the grab Ride app when I was in Thailand and Cambodia, it just cuts the BS of the scammy taxi driver and generally puts them in line, or shuts them down due to their bed Behavior. Arrival at the airport would have been good except I was hit on by a scammy driver not even a taxi and then he demanded way too much money to me that was obvious. So I went in the hotel and told him to come inside and he would not come in fortunately I only had one bag and I did not go out of the hotel once I went inside so he waited outside for a while then just left sorry no money trash. Some touristy places treat foreigners with that phony smile and literally reach into your hand and take your money, even if I knew full well that was instantly insulting and I let them know you don't reach in my hand and take money. Marble Mountain was really great, but it is about 500 uneven Rock steps so careful there. I hope to get back there soon🙏🙏

@@sweetjane6506 Yeah i can agree with Breezy on this. But on YOUR point i can see two. I feel though Visiting Vietnam and LIVING in Vietnam are two different things. Me personally i visited 3 times before i offically moved here 9 years ago.. I can safetly say the visits of months at a time where much more relaxed not many problems, nor worries of permits, renting homes, daily shopping , etc. WHen i finally made the move things changed and fast, this isn't bad its just intergrating into the culture compared to seeing it from the outside. Barcelona, that sucks i hear horror stories of that place a lot from tourist here in regards to safety :( Ahh and Vietnam, its not two words :)

@@RockDavid In Viet Nam it is. : ) Any country has more hassles when you live there long term, and you're not a citizen. I lived in Thailand for several years, and while shopping and rentals are pretty convenient, immigration is a nightmare.

best way to avoid these scams: don't go to VN

The only way to avoid scams is to never leave the house... although there are a ton of scams online too.... Da nang is not unique and there are things to look out for everywhere you go. Go to VN, but know what to look out for... same goes for any new destination. The pros FAR outweigh the cons, promise! ☺

I've just come back from 5 weeks in Vietnam. It's more than a hassle. If you like to be treated rudely, eat greasy fried food while watching rats scurrying around the dirty streets and be cheated by almost everyone, then Vietnam is your perfect vacation destination. As for me, Thailand is much more enjoyable. The people are polite and the natural beauty beats Vietnam in a second. the food is much better in Thailand too!

Most hotels upon landing at a Vietnamese airport arrange a pick up for you. Been to 4 different airports in Vietnam and never had a problem. From the Hanoi airport to the old quarters in Hanoi we paid $ 25.00 US arranged by the hotel . It was at least 40 minutes in rush hour.Very reasonably . When I think that a 20 min. Taxis ride from my home to the Calgary international airport cost $80.00. So who is ripping of who?

Actually it can happen in any country. I also purchased a suitcase in Albania that got broken even before i left the hotel 😂. And another suitcase lost a wheel 5minutes after purchase, in Canary Islands. The only difference, in Albania they refused to exchange it, but in Canary islands for 5 euro fee i got a good functional replacement. Both suitcases were 50euro each. So, you never know....

Vietnam is a good destination because it's cheap but it's also cheap because it's a poor country. When you are poor, you will do anything to survive. Scams are everywhere but they are more prevalent in 3rd world or developing countries like Vietnam. These are good reminders to be mindful when you travel abroad.

This is why I no longer care to travel much. When I was young I use to love the market games where you barter with the seller. I knew sometimes I was being scammed but it was usually for a very small amount of money and I felt sorry for the people so I wrote it off as entertainment. I no longer feel this way, I don't want to deal with crooks anywhere.
