A while ago I was playing with friends, and they are a bloodthirsty bunch. They were in town and 1 of them had a shopping list and the others only needed a few things. While they waited for him, they were aching for something to murderize. So, when they finally left town I had them stumble across a Treant. This batch of murder hobos ended up talking to the thing, and even ended up brokering a deal with it. They traded away some material goods (not money) for Treant weed. The thought to fight it never even crossed their minds. I guess what I'm saying is you can never prepare for D&D.

That's hilarious dude! "Loot and scoot" just makes me smile. When my players feel the need to play that way. I usually let them if they roll well enough, but I think to counteract too much of loot and scoot is simply to put them in situations where its more a question of a moral choice. Is if profitable to save the Widow from bandits? No. But will your players save her? Most likely yes. And when they do, she thanks them profusely and gives them a few copper coins. Hopefully, if your players are good people, they'll cherish those coppers more than gold. But of course, stealing from a dragon's horde is also the stuff legends are made from. I think in that case, my trick is usually to try to put interesting items with alot of history in front of them instead of outright giving them too many legendary magical items. (That happened to a new DM's campaign I was a part of and it completely unbalanced the game to where he had to throw level 24 monsters at us while we were level 6.)
@joshuaturner4602
2 жыл бұрын
Loot and Scoot was the name of the game in older editions where acquiring gold also got you experience. The only reason to fight monsters at all was because they were guarding the loot. Which of course meant that fighting a wandering monster in the dungeon was meant to be a motivating factor, combat could be quite swingy and most monsters left their loot at home which meant killing them away from their lair didnt give you much.

Tbh, I think that exploration is two pillars: cold and hot. Cold exploration is walking through the town, investigating the magical object, solving the strange riddle. It usually takes quite a lot of preparation, actions are long and loose form, and the players are mostly trying to learn through their characters. Hot exploration has all of the drama and danger of combat - but little of the crunch. The village is on fire! The ship is sinking! The building is collapsing! Mechanically there’s little to no difference: maybe we have initiative, and we’re probably rolling more dice, but that’s it. To experience, they’re categorically different: danger is often much less planned, the heart is pounding, and the immersion comes from having to instantly react as your character. The problems are simple, but the stakes are high and immediate - the solutions have to be fast, and bad ideas/rolls create new ones. I usually try to balance my games between those four pillars, knowing that combat takes ages because it’s so crunchy, and social gets spread everywhere by good game design

For me and my group, combat (against sentient enemies, at least) is a rare and challenging "last resort" scenario. My players prefer to explore and talk their way through almost every session, and they like to pit factions/characters against each other instead of getting involved in a fight themselves. I'd like to do a tiny bit more combat, but I also prefer the social aspects, so I can't complain. And yes. You can't go wrong with a good cheeseburger.

One of the biggest advantages to completely homebrewed campaigns, is that you're free to weave character arcs into the campaign arc. I encourage players to give their full backstory, and interesting things they think will be good for their character. Then I come up with a few and discuss whether they like it. Finally I pick some from their suggestions, some from what I discussed and some I come up with secretly. This helps me to flesh out my world too. I've had character discussions become the basis for the campaigns plot. This is where the improv part of being a dm really kicks in.

Fantastic video Luke. I love to wrap a little bit of terror in with the exploration part. When the party goes into the cave to avoid the goblin patrol, they stumble upon stock piled corpses of Goblins in the cave, their boots become soaked in the cold brakish water spilling out of the floor of the cave... It smells of death, rot and mold, but the players see what appears to be a distant light flickering within the depths of the cavern.

I did my first session DMing in anger on Sunday just gone. It was fun but I definitely made a bunch of mistakes. I kept getting players to roll initiative as soon as a creature appeared which instantly puts them into 'it's fighting time' mindset, whereas I should have let them play the situation out, for example. Missing out on great opportunities for social interaction. I also underestimated my players' interest in finding ways *around* combat, and had to brickwall them from an area (they're all except 1 brand new players and I knew they'd end up with someone dead if they went through, which I don't want to do until they're at level 3 and know the basic mechanics and have found their feet.) I'd like to extend my thanks to you though, Luke, as I discovered your channel a handful of days before the session and you already helped me avoid a couple of pitfalls I would've otherwise hit! You've especially given me confidence to kill with impunity if the players screw up instead of trying to mother them through everything in the future! :D

Force their hand situationally, so you have more quality fights instead of quantity and don't end up wasting time making fights that never occur. An example could be to kidnap a NPC that is dear to the party and then leave a trail towards where that NPC is captured with an epic fight planned.

I typically alternate 4 types of session. Session A will be a single major combat, with the leadup and aftermath taking up the rest of the time. Bypassing without combat is an option but not likely to happen. Session B will be talky talky explorationy, with maybe a minor combat that can probably be bypassed or resolved with a social interaction. Bypassing without combat is usually really likely with just conversation, typically giving info about the big bad or challenges up ahead. Session C will be many small combats (clearing room to room in a dungeon), which can definitely be bypassed with some cleverness, but it can turn into a really big combat if mistakes start to snowball. Of if the players intentionally pull all the enemies at once. Session D will be the build up/wind down session. Stuff leading to or the fallout from an adventure/quest completion.

Ran my first little campaign a little while ago, finished it like 2 weeks ago and I do have to say... I now understand why u can throw challenge rating or the deadly warning on dnd beyond out of the window as soon as healing spells come into play.. especially with the life domain cleric a friend of mine was playing.. I had a party of 5 players fight a young emerald dragon, 3 quasit minions and a surprise hoard scarab at the same time and I felt like I could have added a lot more minions or pretty much double the dragons HP. I did buff things on the fly but I was still unhappy with it, players were afraid of going down as they are new, but I always knew that with the life domain cleric nobody was ever in actual danger. With the heavy armor it is actually really difficult to get the concentration off of the cleric and my party didn't play optimal at all either, yet went through the combat with only 3 people downing but the cleric had AoE healing on almost the entire time. Doesnt help that gem dragons arent very combat focussed, but I will definitely be a lot less kind about my encounter design in the future. Next time I will have all the quasits focus on the cleric right away and get that concentration broken x) Any tips on how to easily deal with the fact that armor class on monsters is also often a damn joke? I bumped almost every little miniboss area up to ac 17 just to make things less laughable.

Congrats on DMing AND finishing a campaign :D Perhaps you could try different things that take the focus away from just two groups of people hitting each other in the face until one goes down :) Strange or even better, moving terrain could do that to some extent. You could put your players on a timer of some sort, perhaps with an event that goes on in the background that they urgently need to get to, which discourages them from tea-bagging your baddies ^^ Sometimes it can help to think video-gamey with the mechanics of the fight, maybe they need to get a protective barrier down to even hurt their opponent... You could even take some of your PCs power away, by for example an arena that weakens healing by its very nature (use those things very sparingly and read the room closely, this can backfire massively ^^). My point is, if you feel that what you described above is a constant issue for you, fiddling with the stat-blocks will only get you so far :)

Any encounter from "easy" to "medium", even "medium hard", needs a win/loss criterion other than death, to preserve interest and dramatic tension. The two sides should each have conflicting goals other than "kill the enemy". Could be as simple at "get through that door as quickly as possible" vs. "delay them getting through that door as long as possible". The result should _matter_ to the greater story or events of the game. A random griffon enconter: the griffon maybe just wants to carry off a horse for dinner, players want to stop it. That is the win/lose. Neither side needs to die -- either the griffon gives up, or it flies off with a tasty meal. Far more interesting than it kills party or party kills it. Lose? Players are down a horse and must deal with it -- perhaps travel speed is now slower or they must leave behind some supplies. Oh, and what was in that horse's saddle bags? Maybe something important and now they must find the griffon's nest to get it back! It might be "easy" to kill those 5 goblin guards. But it is "very hard" to keep them from lighting the great signal pyre of _Galen-Ghor_ before you do. And if that beacon is lit, the Goblin army will descend upon the countryside before the next fortnight!

Giving people a few different options is a really good idea. Even in more event-based settings, I will often have notable choice points emerge. "Choose to go search for the legendary sword or talk to the leader of the Inquisition". There may be some linear sequences of events---combats, exploration, or social---after that, but another branching point. One other big thing is to allow social interaction in combat. WotC seems to have implicitly set DCs for those VERY high and by virtue of the action economy make this extremely difficult, but in a lot of cases it should be possible to make use of Intimidation, Deception, or Persuasion in combat. I don't know an exact way to do this but at minimum, the DM shouldn't send the signal "negotiating/bluffing/intimidating is a waste of time, you should just kill 'em all".

A boring walk home with minimal and easy combats helped my last party to end. They wound down, planned their independent futures and each became wealthy using the magical item and skills they’d gained. There was a death that drug everyone down but days after rough games I hear positive things from their feelings in hindsight. It was harsh in the moment - sad for an hour, but they enjoyed having felt it. After that it was easy to walk then home.
Variety is the spice of life. I am the explorer kind of gamer. I think a good nickname is trampy-trampy. I hope this isn't too insulting to my exploring brethren. Tramp is a word with a lot of meanings to it. It originally meant the sound of walking. Explorers do a lot of walking in order to see the world. Tramp also means homeless person. That can be similar to what an adventuring party. This video mentioned murder hobos. Hobo means the same thing. When I think of tramp, I tend to think of one of the titular characters of Disney's Lady and the Tramp. That guy was such a cute, fluffy and charming dog. He was a stray. So that is the dog or cat version of a hobo. Tramp also has an innuendo meaning. Maybe it is best not to think of that meaning. At least it can be toned way down. So the exploring player character is attractive to NPCs of the opposite gender, and that's about it. That gives a little added spice. It would be fun to go through the world as an exploring player character. Along the way I can sing "He's a tramp. But they love him. Breaks a new heart every day." I see a whole new side of murder hobos. I thought it was weird and antisocial to kill townsfolk. Now I see that there is a reason. Today I was playing a game with my aunt and uncle. It was mostly about being in a town and castle. This video talked about a bar fight. That is exactly what my aunt did. The bar ( or tavern or whatever) had a special room with a fighting ring. There were even bets. So my aunt got into the ring with an NPC fighter and did combat. We earned a lot of silver from her victory. The main motivation was boredom. I get that too. Settlements are nice for a break, but they can easily overstay their welcome. When I played World of Warcraft, I got so bored hanging out in the capitals all the time. I would rather explore the wilderness. So I had professions to fit this. All my characters know skinning. All know either herbalism or mining. These are gathering professions, so I can do them in the field. That is where the fun is. In recent times, it has become easy to gain money by questing alone. So I ended up selling my gathering materials to the vendor instead of using the auction house. The vender is a lot less profitable. However they can get me in and out real fast. It is probably because they always buy at a fixed price. No need to play around with the pricing and maximize profit. Between the gathering professions and the vender, I really minimize my time in cities.

Actually, I'm a big fan of a good old hamburger! Being French, I unsurprisingly like to have some tasty cheese in it... Bacon is also nice, though when it comes to meat, I have a sweet spot for duck "magret" or "foie gras" with some chutney. As for the fries, sweet potato fries really bring something to the table, especially so with some BBQ sauce 💙

Okay, 1.) Lookie lookie is the pet name for exploration. 2.) Bacon, steak sauce (or barbeque as a substitute, but I prefer steak sauce), onion rings or caramelized onion, peperjack cheese, and, if it has barbeque on it, jalapenos. I like the contrast of the sweet and the heat. 3.) Orcs being "just regular people" brings interesting new dimensions to political drama, actually. If you like political drama, it will actually make for a better game.

Bartles Taxonomy of players have 4 types of players. Killers, Explorers, Achievers, and Socializers. It was meant for MUDs, but it works in most gaming. Killers like combat. Plain and simple. You can increase the number of Killers by increasing soft targets for them, which usually means achievers and socializers. Achievers are competitive and like getting the best and greatest things and being able to say they did this and got this in a game. Just by having cool things for them to do, they will show up. Achievers like having Killers around because it adds a bit of a challenge to them. But too many Killers makes things frustrating. Explorers like finding all the cool hidden stuff that they people hide, and will be the ones most like to suggest explorations. Achievers love explorers because they often find cool little exploits to allow them to achieve faster and better. Killers, on the other hand, HATE explorers because Explorers don't react to the betrayal and PVP, and sometimes, they can find some strange combination of items/discoveries that completely shows up the Killers, and Killers don't like being embarrassed. As such, Explorers can create an equilibrium between Killers and Achievers simply by giving them things to explore and find. Finally Socializers like to talk and share. In RPGs, they're the ones who will shine most when they're roleplaying. They aren't there for anything else, just socializing. As such, they create a feedback loop amongst themselves. The more social a game, the more Socializers will show up. Killers LOVE socializers because they're easy targets that help stack up the body count. Socializers, meanwhile, hate Killers. Time being killed takes away from their socializing. Increasing combat will help limit socializers.
