10 Ways to HOCKEY STOP for Beginners
1. SHAVE ICE
Try to shave off some ice. Keep your skates at an angle so only the inside edges touch the ice. Try not to put too much weight on the sliding skate.
2. 45 DEGREE PLOW
Keep most of your weight on the back leg and try to slide with the front leg at an angle. Now you're half way there.
3. SHAVE & DRAG (INSIDE-INSIDE)
This is the real first hockey stop. Keeping a wide distance between your skates gives you a wide base for balance. The back skate is dragging behind on its inside edge.
4. DOUBLE SHAVE (INSIDE-OUTSIDE)
With the back skate on its outside edge, both skates shave off ice. This ensures faster hockey stops but requires a better balance.
5. WEAK SIDE
Learn the hockey stop both ways. As a beginner, you should make it a habit to use both sides equally often.
6. PARTIAL STOP / SLOWDOWN
Try to abort a stop half way. Now it's not only a stopping technique, it's a way to control speed.
7. BACKWARD TRANSITION STOP
While we're at it. Make it into a backward transition. Try to control how much speed you lose before you continue backward.
8. BACKWARD STOP
Going backward, you should be able to hockey stop that way too.
9. ONE-LEGGED (FRONT)
A one-legged stop leaves less room for error. So once you get it one-legged you can proudly say you're no longer a beginner.
10. ONE-LEGGED (BACK)
With the back skate it's even more challenging but play around with the hockey stop, be creative. Before you know you'll do it this way as well.

I totally understand if the hockey stop seems impossible. You may struggle a lot before you make it. And of course that's very frustrating. But once you get it, you get it, and from there on it's all fun. Then you'll want to do it all the time. And the more you repeat, the better you get.
But please don't forget your weak side. You should be able to do it both ways.
I recommend you also check out other youtube videos. I'm not a professional coach, nor an expert. Far from. I didn't ice skate for years and recently I had to re-learn everything. Therefore I know what you will struggle with.
First of all, expect to fall a lot. Knee pads and helmet are recommended.
Once I had too much weight on my heel. The skate made a sharp turn and I fell on my ass. Another time the skates didn't even shave the ice. They just slipped and I fell on my hip. Some other times they dug into the ice while they should be shaving and I almost fell forward.
Good luck, be patient and I know you'll get there!
