I’m so happy to find this video!! I actually stumbled across a blog last week that you wrote about this subject. I was sharing it with my husband, and he said it sounded like I had written it myself! What I wouldn’t give to have found this a year ago. I had surgery 8 weeks ago for tendinitis in my elbow from crocheting. I waited over a year to go to the doctor about the pain I was having. They did order physical therapy, I had cortisone shots, dry needling, the works. I had just waited so long that the tendon was too damaged and surgery was the only fix. I begin post op physical therapy tomorrow. I miss crocheting so much!! The doctor says I will be able to crochet again eventually, but it will be 6 months or so before I am allowed to do anything more than just a few stitches at a time. If there is one thing I have learned in all of this it is DON’T put off going to the doctor when you first start feeling pain! All of this could have been avoided if I had just gone as soon as the pain started.

Yep, allllllll of that! For those of us with ADHD that get into hyperfocus, it can be super difficult to tear ourselves away from our project. I find myself doing this a lot, even to the point of my eyes getting bleary, my mouth dry because I won't stop to take a drink of water. So, I've started setting a timer and when that timer goes off, I must break focus to turn it off and then I drink water and go to the restroom or walk to the kitchen and back, something to get myself out of that hyperfocus for a minute. It's also a great time to stretch out my wrist and hands, shoulders, neck, and back, all of which carry the tension of the hyperfocus. I also find that in general, amigurumi is the absolute WORST for my wrists, which have carpal tunnel. I think I tense up a lot more with amigurumi, because the stitches are so tight. So, I definitely try not to do ami all the time. I love mosaic crochet and that's what I've done most of this year and last and my carpal tunnel hasn't been acting up like it was before. I also sleep in wrist braces (the kind with a metal bar in them) and that has greatly helped my pain as well. Finally, I cannot stand to use anything but my Furls hooks now. I'm an Odyssey lover, through and through. I can work longer with less pain, I've loosened up and don't hold all that tension in my body, and my stitches look so great too! I'm slowly building my collection. It's an investment, to be sure, but way cheaper than surgery and physical therapy. I too care so much about this topic because I don't think it gets addressed enough in the crochet/fiber community. Thanks for the video and the tips!

There are a few points I agree with: take breaks, use ergonomic tools, physical therapy if needed, and changing fiber types (alternate your plant fibers such as cotton, linen, and silk with animal fibers). However there are a few things that I don’t agree with. Let me explain the muscular system of the arm first. The hand has over 30 muscles. The wrist and forearm has 18. The elbow has zero muscles. The upper arm covers the triceps, biceps, pectorals, and the shoulder muscles. Blood flows to muscles but not to tendons. The pain felt in the elbow is due to either a process down stream or a process up stream. Sometimes both. The elbow pain is a referral pain from an overworked muscle. Inflammation is a warning system from our body. It’s important to listen to that pain and work to correct the pattern dysfunction (strengthen the weak muscles, stretch the tight muscles). If you are going to wear a brace, be aware that you are impeding recovery and strengthening. I’m not saying don’t wear a brace. I’m suggesting that if you do, then don’t use that arm. One last note: look up ‘tech neck’. Don’t keep your head down for long periods of time. Rather, raise your device to eye level when looking at it. Also, as part of your craft break, I suggest massaging your hand (palm side stroking between fingers, stroke fingers, and lightly stretching your fingers back and forth.) This will increase blood flow to your hand. Also, for the neck strain, practice a cervical retraction (with your head in neutral position, shift your head only back as if you smelled something vile.)

I also suffer from these things. Something that helped me was using the larger handles on my hooks and stopping the reaching and pulling with my hook instead of yarning over. My elbow, wrist and thumb were the most effected. I had some carptunnel prior to trying to crochet that may have made my pain worse. Something else I found helped with pain was a magnesium lotion I received as a sample and am desperately trying to find the source of it, because I lost the card. I know you can only purchase from a representative. It does not take hours for relief and very little of it. If interested let me know and if I locate it I'll let you know so you can research a representative in your area.

Different yarn weights make a big difference. I won't work with heavy or chunky yarns as they just about kill my hands and elbows. I also can't do really tight/fiddly work (amigurimi). I alternate between knitting and crochet as the movements are just different enough to stave off repetitive injury as long as I make sure that I don't overdo it.

Physical therapy has helped me out over the years for many different pain issues. One thing that I learned is that not all Physical Therapists will be the perfect match for each person. Sometimes the assigned PT doesn’t have the level of experience needed for your individual needs. Perhaps they are not able to explain the exercises in a way that make sense to you. Bottom line is I highly recommended that people do not discount the entire PT experience based on a course of therapy with a single therapist. If you do not feel like you are making progress with you assigned PT or do not see any benefit to continuing sessions, please see another PT before totally giving up on it! Of course, it would be good to speak openly and honestly to your current PT about your concerns. This communication can solve many issues as PTs are not always aware that how the client feels about the therapy provided. I did not do this initially as I tend to be a people-pleaser but over the years I have been working through my uncomfortableness with speaking up. It does make a difference. If you are at a larger PT clinic, you could also speak to the director/manager of the PT staff about your concerns and request a different therapist. Friends, family and fellow hobbyists in your area can be good sources for PT recommendations. I wish I hadn’t given up on PT for my original pain issue. Many years later, I finally agreed to go to PT again, for a different issue. This person was a perfect fit for me and eventually helped address many of those original dysfunctions.

I had three days off in a row a few weeks ago and I knit a cabled sweater wayyyyy more than I should have, and much more than I usually do, over the entire three days. Right at the end, I had a flare up of pain in my right arm and hand. It was pretty bad, and it made me sit up and take notice. I took three days off, but when I started knitting again it came back, so I took a week off, and since then I've been careful not to knit for long periods, especially cabling as that puts more stress on the hands. I'm also breaking my longstanding habit of only having one or two projects going at once, and I have THREE now, all with different needle sizes and different fabric elements (stranded knitting, garter stitch, and cables). The stranded knitting is the easiest on my hands, since I hold one strand in each hand so that the work is divided between the two. Whenever I start feeling any kind of pain, I stop knitting immediately. It's pretty hard, because I love knitting so much; but I don't want to really injure myself.

I’ve had problems for years I actually quit working, because I was a cashier and constantly had pain in my hands and wrist before that I had an injury and wore a brace with an aluminum busk in it and I like that the best with lacing I really hate the Velcro. It attacks me, but the most helpful thing I can do is when I take a break it go to the kitchen, turn on the teapot and sort out all my silverware from any other dirty dishes, and put them into soak in warm water. Then I keep adding hot water and wash the dishes. The hot water really relaxes my hand and stops the pain, I also have a wax pot that I use except for right now. I need a couple more boxes of wax. I don’t have enough to actually use it with just one box because it’s for feet and that makes it take much more wax than the other smaller.kind of

Sorry if this is too long. If you were at the sea, did you swim? When I was diagnosed with gout, my friend's naturopath said I should do epsom salts therapy baths. Just like swimming in the sea, it makes you tired, and helps clear the damaging waste in your muscles and joints, it takes away my pain. Please be careful with cortisone, it can leave a build-up, which can do nasty things long-term. The needles do work. I found working with wool, the springiness actually hurts my fingers. Though for a tea-cosy wool is superior. I mainly work with acrylic. When my hands are really sore, I can change to other crafts for a bit. I do not make "all in one" blankets, I make lots of squares, at 12," you only need ×9, then sew them up, which is when the blanket gets heavier. But this takes a lot less of a toll. I have a bursitic knee, I was told to walk for it. Keeping hydrated is a good reason to stop every 20 minutes, and have a few mouthfuls of water. Kidneys work better with small amounts of water, more often. Once your mouth is dry, you are already dehydrated. You wouldn't wash your face with a cup of milked, sugared tea. Tea is actually good for people, just not best to be the only thing to drink. If not an experienced crafter, you will use your muscles in new ways to do new techniques. Try not to use exaggerated movements to achieve your tasks, these can wear you out too much. E.g. try to describe a circle with the hook for a yarn over rather than turn your wrist to roll the hook. Like at the gym, you have to train your muscles over time, and build up to longer sessions. It is also good for your eyes, to change your focus. To look up, and look around often, and move your head, is good for a neck, which can get tension headaches started if kept still for long stretches. It is so easy to get carried away when doing something enjoyable. If you have a recliner, try crafting in it, where your limbs are supported, and you are comfortable.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! The Epsom salt baths are such a good idea! Have never thought of it like that! And yes, I only got a cortisone shot once and read that repeated use could cause damage long term. 😘

1 cup of E salt per tub. Stay in 1/2 hr. Be careful not to use water too hot, you could faint and drown. Don't do anything strenuous for the rest of the day, no closer than once a week. Hop out and wrap in a sheet, without drying off, it is still working. Lay down and stay warm for an equal time, then shower with soap to stop the effect happening. After a while less is needed. Every 3 to 6 months, rather than weekly. With gout I need to dunk every joint in my body to get the waste out of them. Apparently once the fluid leaves the acid that builds up in the joints, it crystallises and destroys the joints. If you have a bad reaction, discontinue. I was told I only need to maintain this when I get the pain back. My aunt suffered with bad migraines, her doctor put cortisone in her brain when it got really bad. Long term this was a disaster, and the doctor apologised for ever having done that. All the best.

Thank you. I found your tips helpful. I go to Physio for other issues and complain often of pain in my right shoulder but I've never mentioned to my physiotherapist the pain in my wrist and forearm because I haven't wanted to bombard her. I should ask her for some help with my issues instead of feeling embarrassed by them. I like the name of your channel. I live near Toronto and I'm bilingual. I was surprised to hear your American accent with a French named channel! If you don't mind me asking, how did you come up with this name?
@EliseRoseCrochet
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely mention it. She may have some great tips! Pain from crocheting and knitting is definitely a more common issue than I ever knew. The name of my channel is sort of a long story but I'll sum it up. I have never taken a French class in my life but my favorite saint is a little French nun named St. Therese of Lisieux. Not knowing that French nouns have genders (like Spanish, which I am familiar with), I just googled The Little Saint and Le Petit Saint came up. It never occurred to me that it was masculine. So my channel is named after a little French woman but my channel name is masculine. Oh well. I get a laugh out of it all the time. Shows my ignorance, Lol! And I'm sure I butcher the pronunciation too!

Infared sauna and reflexology (they do massage arms too) help with my foot pain. Don't avoid yoga just modify. Exercise is important. I cant think of any forearm yoga poses but you can do regular plank instead of forearm plank. Try passive hang for your shoulder, maybe add small upper back engagement, like shrugs, not full pull ups. Climbing has helped my neck/shoulder pain by strengthening lat and traps. Ditto on cotton. No elbow pain until I decided to know a summer T. I have a wool sweater to alternate with. Climbing helps strengthen my forearms a lot. V0 boulders or 5.6 on the autobelay at the gym are like climbing ladders. You can knit yourself a chaulk bag if you want.

Thanks for the information. I will be trying the exercise. I will also consider going for physical therapy. I've been to my local physical therapist so often over other injuries I know them like family, lol. I've been crocheting, knitting, sewing, crafting for 50 years. And, I was recently using the computer a lot for a new job. With all of that, I started getting pain in my elbow that progressively got worse. I put off seeing my doctor over it until it hurt so bad I couldn't take it anymore. My doctor said it was tennis elbow. She said to rest my elbow and use ice. That worked for a while. Then I started repetitive motion again. My pain came back. I am now wearing a brace I bought at Walmart when I am carrying heavy grocery bags, picking up my 25 pound doggie, etc. It helps. Not long after I started getting the tennis elbow I also started having rotator cuff pain. I had that in the past. But, it healed for the most part. Not sure why I have both at the same time other than the way I was moving the mouse to my computer. I pay more attention to how I move my right arm now. And I switch my hobbies and household chores up so I am not being as repetitive. It helps a lot. I want to be able to use my hands and arms for the rest of my life. I am a hyper person. It kills me to have to rest an injury. :)
