I had a chrome bumper '68 GTO in the 1970s. Yes, they were rare and if I remember correctly the car had to be ordered that way and there was a $200 credit. I don't know how accurate this is but I heard many years ago that the chrome bumper weighed 100 lbs less than the Rubber bumper/hideaway headlight combination. Whoever ordered my GTO when new clearly wanted a fast car as it had 3.73 gears, Turbo 400, hoodmount tach, and console shifter that you pushed to the side and it stopped at the next gear (NOT the His & Hers). I later had a '78 Z-28 Camaro with that same automatic shifter.

For those curious about how to "chop" the roof for that letterbox look the window frame pillars are cut through middle. A small section is then cut out each cut end to shorten the frame pillars. Then the roof above front seats is cut straight across. Strip of sheet metal is then soldered in as a spacer to extend length of roof above front seats. The spacer lines up the cut ends of window pillars when top is reattached and soldered. The term "lead sled" is all the soldering added extra weight to hotrod.
