THAC0 used to be a chart for the DM that the players didn't see, and descending Armor Class was basically "how many exposed weak points does your armor have?" To most players in old versions of D&D, the hit chart was a simple table telling you what numbers would hit what monsters. If you attack the DM might ask you to just say the strongest monster you could hit with that roll if he was using a custom monster. Cleric's Turn/Destroy Undead chart likewise had a straightforward hierarchy of all commonly known undead monsters in it, telling you at what level you could instill fear or damage in which ones. Much more evocative, something lost in the modern games and their methods of laying out the charts.

Quest 64 had leveling through combat; stats changed based on usage. A lot of its big problem was that the game was completely left in a totally unfinished state - all you needed was to go to the bosses, beat them, beat the final boss, and you are done. The only way you could really fail was to not get enough water magic to heal. The rest was optional, as your staff often made your damage spells look weak and useless except for getting hit for standing too close to enemies, but that also buffed your character too, so it didn't matter later on. It was a Atari game for N64 - get the keys and go to the end. You win.

Towers II: Plight of the Stargazer on the Atari Jaguar, from what I understand that was available on other consoles and computers as well. The farthest I got was a hallway with these little mudmen (I mean, real small characters) but they wind up and hit like a ton of bricks. We're talking half of your health bar with 1 hit, take a second hit and you're dead. I thought 'maybe I'm not supposed to be here yet.' But I searched every place on the map and there was nowhere else to go except down that hallway with the little mudmen that hit really hard. Turns out, nobody else has played the game because there are no strategy guides and no playthroughs on KZitem. I almost bought Fable several times along with the strategy guide. Might be the first video I can't comment on directly very much. Literally only played two games on this list (Fable and Fallout) Fable was fine for what it was as it had decent ideas behind it, but it was a game that really needed sequels to expand upon those ideas. However, I feel like that for each improvement that was made, things fell backwards a bit. Very much a case of "one step forward, two steps back" in a series that has always felt uneven. As for Fallout, if you can get past the camera, there's a very solid game there, and it gives a good glimpse on where most of the things the series is known for started. While I started with FO3 and prefer the newer games in the series, I can certainly see why fans prefer the older games, as well as why New Vegas is generally the favorite in the whole series (especially as Obsidian was founded by former Black Isle employees that worked on the original Fallout) Since it's going to be topical in the next month, any chance of something related to MMOs? With the new WoW expansion coming out, I feel like that might be a prime time for either a "Ten Favorite MMORPGs" or " Ten Worst" if you really want to potentially ruffle some feathers 😆 Failing that, if you've only played WoW (cause let's face it, just about everyone has tried it at some point), I suppose a ranking list for the various WoW expansions could work. Obviously it's WAY too early to make a call on how The War Within is going to rank overall, but if we include Classic WoW in the list then you've got a Top Ten ready to go if you're ranking everything up through Dragonflight.

Interesting list. I agree with most of your points. I have played a bloody ton of RPG's. My channel heavily focused on first person dungeon crawlers but I have a lot of isometric games. Stone Prophet is probably the one I will punch you in the mouth for in a friendly corrective way. It's not mentioned often but I consider it a hidden gem. In my tier list of real time dungeon crawlers I put in the top. Comparing with other games in 1994 it was way ahead of its time. Strahd Possession was 'ok'. I played it mostly for grinding up characters for Stone Prophet. Fable did not impress me. Arena do indeed suck and Daggerfall did not impress me either. Fallout to me was an incredible game. It isn't my first pick for the type, but it is still worth playing and analyzing. I did enjoy Wasteland the remaster a lot when I played it. I never played the original. HeroQuest is a weird pick. I would LOVE a modern port of HeroQuest. HeroQuest 2: Legacy of Sorasil is very interesting, especially the story of how it was made, and how it ended up into a 'meh' game due to the weird balance between trying to be accessible and advanced. I do love the music in HeroQuest.

I have always desperately wanted to love Elder Scrolls: Morrowind but the leveling system ruins it for me each and every time I try to get into it. To level up your attributes such as strength, intelligence, and agility optimally you have to set your character up "correctly" at the beginning of the game and improve your skills such as athletics, heavy armor, and speech in a certain manner / order . If you mess up, you will miss out on getting the maximum amount of attribute points when you level up. If you want to truly Min-max your character, the process is tedious and somewhat complicated. Missing out on potential attribute points bothers me too much to let happen, but the process of getting them burns me out before I get too far into the process. It's a catch 22 and a bad design choice IMO.

Gotta disagree with your take on Battletech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception. This was an absolute gem when it was released, and it was a beautiful game on the C64. My friends and I played the crap out of it in the early 90s. My only gripe was that finding the cache was a lot like pixel hunting. I spent a few weeks looking for the damn thing. combing the map back and forth. Recently, I've been trying to get my head around Fallout. I've owned it for years but never really invested time into it. I'm not a fan of the isometric views either. OG Wasteland looked better on the C64 than on PC (your game play footage looks like the PC CGA version) - but yeah, the game mechanics are a bit obtuse and often don't make sense. I've been working my way through the remaster. I agree that it's the version to play and it seems to go on sale a lot, so it's an cheap and easy pickup.

I'm not sure this was a particularly well thought out list. I mean, you complain about Fallout and how hard the isometric perspective is and you hate that. I don't agree with that position, particularly given how I think some of the best ever games came in an isometric projection view like Terror from the Deep. And I'm not sure that enemies necessarily get hidden behind walls in Fallout. There are certainly a number of games that are TERRIBLE for this, like Diablo 1-4.... although to be fair, I think Diablo 1 & 2 are quite good, although 3 and 4 represent the absolute worst examples the game industry has of ripping off consumers and predatory UI practices. And then you sort of keep going back to the well of explaining how the armour class system in D&D is bad. I don't necessarily agree there either. Some of the best computer RPGs ever were made in that system, like Planescape Torment (which is also isometric)... and I'm not sure you will ever win many Internet points if you bag out the grand-daddy of RPGs. Maybe you just haven't experienced any bad RPGs yet, like Might and Magic 8 or Lands of Lore 2. Welp, now that I have thoroughly disagreed with this list, I guess I should go and watch your top 10. Given you hate isometric I assume its just going to be full of Cyberpunk and Witcher games, which to be fair are probably the best for any modern audience.
