For English speakers... “10 Worst Types of Vocal Coaches/Teachers”
1. A vocal coach who doesn’t know how to sing. They don’t need to sing like Beyoncé, Mariah or Ed Sheeran, but they need to be able to show/demonstrate to you what they mean during coaching, not just tell you what to do.
2. A vocal coach who always tells you everything is ok/good. She often has people come to workshops/classes who have a lot of problems with their singing (such as placement, too nasal, etc). Many times they have had training but the vocal coach tells them they’re doing well or worse yet, they’re doing perfectly.
3. A vocal coach who doesn’t assigns songs for you to study (or assigns songs that are far too easy/difficult). A good vocal coach will know to assign certain songs for your vocal abilities that will serve to help you improve certain skills!
4. A vocal coach that only makes you sing with a microphone. If you only sing with a microphone, you develop a false sense of your vocal power/resonance. A good vocal coach will slowly introduce singing with a microphone if there is an upcoming performance you need to prepare for.
5. A vocal coach who sings more than you. If your vocal coach is giving you a concert during YOUR vocal lessons, something’s not right.
6. A vocal coach who is way too negative. If your vocal coach ONLY has negative things to say about your abilities and nothing positive at all, don’t walk out, RUN. Your coach should be positive and supporting you.
7. A vocal coach who is actually making you lose some skills you already had. Particularly, if you are losing skills related to extension and changing vocal registers. A vocal coach should help you gain skills, not lose them. Pay close attention to what you are able to do and be sure you aren’t getting worse with your lessons.
8. A vocal coach who is a musical “bigot”. If your vocal coach is very close-minded when it comes to modern music or any music that he/she doesn’t like, then perhaps it is time to look for a new vocal coach. Cheryl believes that a vocal coach should be open to all types of music!
9. A vocal coach that is too into his/her own piano playing. There’s nothing worse than a vocal coach that’s too busy focusing on his/her own playing and doesn’t listen to your singing.
10. A vocal coach who focuses too much on the anatomy of your voice and the structures you use to sing. While important, a vocal coach should be focused on the application and in the end, should be helping you make music and art with your instrument. Focusing too much on the anatomy can be confusing for students, or may make singing seem too mechanical.
She gave so many great tips and she’s so funny!! I didn’t want to make the descriptions of each tip too long. But really, she’s great and seems very knowledgeable!
