This was the mask vs. mask match for Kane vs. Vader... This was stupid for several reasons. Most importantly, Vader took his mask off regularly, you could see Vader's face through his mask, and Kane was in the middle of the most important storyline in WWF history. It was very clear, that Kane wasn't going to lose. So even at 12, I knew to just wait to see the outcomes on RAW.

I actually just got done playing a Sporcle quiz on WWE PPV Main Eventers and was surprised to see that Drew never main evented a "PPV" special until 2019. It looks like they're going to give him the Undisputed Championship at Clash at the Castle. I feel bad for him getting his big WrestleMania moment against Brock Lesnar in front nobody. He never really got a chance to prove himself as champion so we're gonna have to wait and see how that plays out, but I find Drew to be a pretty dry personality, so I'm not expecting much.

Near the end the pay per views were just getting so expensive, around $40-50 in the USA and $70-75 in Canada - individually the prices are not so bad, but when they start showing more and more each year and you get the occasional stinker in the mix its hard to say you were getting good value for your money.

By 2004 wrestlemania was $60, and somewhere around 2008 I remember them offering different versions of Wrestlemania based on resolution, with 1080p being $90. Keep in mind, 2008 was well before the idea of a 2 night Wrestlemania. So this was before they had the red carpet stuff, or the hall of fame on the same day, or the fan axxess stuff. Nope. It was just the 3 1/2 hour show, and also if you watched sunday night heat on either USA or MTV, you got that hour free. Outside of that, it wasn't the big event it is today.

I wouldn’t say they intentionally sandbagged anything except the main event. Paul Heyman & Big Show wanted to use the match to elevate CM Punk and start his run as ECW Champion, only for Vince to interfere, fire Heyman, and change the match so Bobby Lashley won by beating Big Show. Everything else was a consequence of the lack of overall direction for ECW as a brand; they weren’t given any kind of undercard championships, had a virtually non-existent women’s division, and generally seemed like the lowest possible priority of any show (save for Heat) that was being produced at the time. I can see the argument that these steps were intentional, but I don’t know that WWE would’ve committed the money to launching ECW and promoting standalone house shows/PPVs if the plan was always to kill it off.

Can you imagine how WWF felt in December of 1997 when they put on In Your House: Degeneration X to 120,000 buys, and WCW put on Starcade 1997? The most successful PPV in the history of the company. Then how quickly the tide turned by the summer of 1998. It's crazy to think of.
@Lostmymind1
2 жыл бұрын
You know, people like to blame Kevin Nash, or finger pokes of doom, or tony schiavone telling people what will put butts in seats, or david arquette winning the wcw title. But the truth is, what killed WCW was ego, stupidity and arrogance. You have Sting vs Hogan. The match representing one of the only times it truly felt like WCW vs NWO. If you're going to have the NWO be the star centerpiece of your show, then you're going to need a counter balance to make them seem like they can be beaten. You're going to need to show the audience that it's not the same thing over and over and over and over. But that's what it was. And at the end of the night, people watching starcade were confused about what right Bret Hart had to restart the match. It was a clean 3 count, which I personally chose to believe was at the request of hulk hogan, because it's a really really hard thing to screw up. Seems intentional to me. And so now, it felt like the NWO were just on top again, until Bret Hart comes out and confusingly restarts the match, and then Sting wins........but, why? If they knew Bret was going to be at the show, they should have advertised it. They already had this storyline going that he was coming in to join the NWO. You could have had Mike Tenay say that he would never join the NWO, and that he's a guy who stands up for what's right. You could have had NWO saying they already signed him, with Tenay and crew telling fans that's pure BS. So they advertise Bret as coming in to be the guest ref for the WHOLE MATCH. And then throughout the match, Hogan tries to buddy up to him, only for Bret to pull away. You could have Sting try to shake Brets hand, only for Bret to slap it away. And as the match continues, it becomes apparent that Bret doesn't HAVE a side. He's calling it 50/50 right down the middle. So Hogan at some point tries to trick Bret, but it backfires and Bret throws the whole NWO out of the ringside area. NWO doesn't listen to rules, and Bret grabs a mic saying that if NWO doesn't vacate the ringside area that Hogan will forfeit the WCW championship to Sting. Which causes them to leave. At some point Lex Luger comes out to check on his buddy Sting, but before he even gets a chance to do anything, Bret throws HIM out of the ringside area. That distraction causes Hogan an opportunity to slam Sting, and then goes for the leg drop. 1....2....kickout, but the pace of the count was steady and neither slow nor fast. Right down the middle. After some back and forth Sting gets Hogan into the scorpion deathlock, but Hogan reaches the ropes, which initiates a 5 count from Bret, which again is steady and fair. Sting breaks after 4, and causes Sting to look disgusted, while Bret gets in Stings face about breaking the move immediately, and not take extra seconds. Upon getting up, Hogan is bitching about the extra 4 seconds, with Bret replying he'[s already addressed that issue. Which causes Bobby Heenan to throw in some line about "See? See? Bret's a coward and is sticking up for Hogan! He's joining the NWO! He's doing Hogans bidding before Hogan even knows he wants it done!" The finish comes when Hogan slams Sting, goes for a leg drop, but Sting rolls out of the way. Hogan clutching his legs, Sting gets the scorpion deathlock in one more time, and Hogan taps clean. But, the question still remains. Now that the match is over, why is Bret here? Who's side is he on? And when asked these questions by Mean Gene, Bret just looks at him, and says "I'll have more to say tomorrow night when we have more airtime. What I have to say can't be said in a soundbyte. I've got a LOT to say about everything that's happened these past few months.." And walks away. THAT'S how you make people watch Nitro the next night, while making them feel they got their moneys worth, while at the same time keeping up interest for the next nights show. Even now, in my alternate reality, I bet you're wondering what Bret would have said on Nitro. Remember, this would be his first public speaking since the screwjob.

This isn't "Buy Rate". What you show are are the total number of buys, or purchases. Buy Rate is the percentage of locations that could purchase the show and did purchase it. Many website that don't understand list "buys" as "buy rate", or think buy rate translates to a fixed number. It's a similar concept to TV ratings. For example, Wrestlemania V had a Buy Rate of 5.90 and 767,000 buys. Wrestlemania 17 had a much lower buy rate of 2.40, but it had 970,000 buys. There were more homes that could purchase 17 than V. (Wrestlemania 1 had a Buy Rate of 1.1, but the number of buys is extremely small. While it was actually on PPV despite what is commonly thought, it was a very small number of locations).
