I started out learning guitar from a video tutorial and the instructor taught this technique from the start. It is so simple and easy to use that I was cutting records within a year with people asking how I learned "to play guitar like that". Even my older brother, who has played guitar for decades, was asking me how I learned so fast. Good job of demonstrating the technique, obviously there is much more to guitar but this will get a player off to a fast start which makes all the other learning even more fun!

I’m 46. Made records and toured the world for 20 years and this is the first and maybe most useful thing I’ve heard someone say in all of the lessons and videos I’ve had over the years. I can’t believe I never thought about this. If I’m trying to learn a song or solo I break it down into chunks. Why would this be any different? Thank you.

Great mind opening lesson!. Some interesting notes about the rhythms you chose for your solos. 1. You begin phrases on up beats. 2. Phrase ends on downbeat. 3. Liberal use of rests.(Don't need to always fill the space.) 4. Play in sync with beat. (i.e. In Time) All great stuff. One of my pet peeves with guitar solos is the swirly swirlies or when the guitarist plays straight eighth note runs up and down the scale. Brillant stuff this lesson. Thank you.

In addition to the root note is knowing where the 3rd is this is important because the 3rd and the flatted 3rd is what determines if the chord is major or minor (flatted third) for blues and most of rock, you can solo in the key of the song and switch between major and minor through the chord changes. The other key that has helped me, is being able to see the triads and use those to solo through and just playing PARTS of the triad can be VERY melodic

Great lesson Eddie. I use scales to know where the notes are on the fretboard. Playing a root and 3 or 4 companion notes leads me to good phrasing. Using the metronome is something I always do, it teaches me rhythm.

Great lesson. I have a little digital metronome that has built-in drum tracks. I'll have to experiment with the boxes with it. I once watched a jazz guitarist play an entire song with one note. His point? Two things: first, focus on getting the most out of every note, second that rhythm counts more than melody (though they, and harmony, all count, of course). This lesson feels like level 2 of that demonstration. Thanks for sharing!

Can relate to a certain extent, in that playing scales super fast up and down. Isn't very difficult, and not musical in any way. My sticking point was, and still is to some extent. Learning to actually slow down and develop some rythm. Instead of always trying to weedle deedle my way all over the fretboard. Rythm is king. Then sprinkling in some more complex "mini solos" throughout the song. Before eventually busting out the main chorus groove. Helps a song build slowly, instead of blowing the wad straight out the gate. Then when you finally break into the main solo section, it should all come around back to the intro rythm. Before finally nailing the chorus again. Rinse and repeat as needed. Doesn't seem to be any discernable structure to many songs anymore? Jumbled messes, that bore me to death. Listen to "Walk All Over You" by AC/DC. That's how rock n roll should sound. Pure and simple. Peace!

The hardest thing to teach/explain is improvisation regardless of how theory smart one is. Ex: I had college guitar students whom could sight read far better than I could that played marching band instruments whom would ask how I knew what to randomly play off the top of my head, of which I’d simply say I can’t teach you what’s in my head, your experience will teach you that depending on your experiences. Hence: Scales a merely a roadmap, how we mix it up and make it musically appealing is our individuality regarding what or whom inspires us to be creative.

His Am penatonic is suitable over an A minor chord, but not suitable for A major chord. You would use the A major penatonic over A major, and a C major penatonic over C major. In the key of G major, the progression could be G, Em, C, and D. If you play G major pentatonic over The G chord, and Em pentatonic over the Em chord etc., it will work. All these notes will also be in the key of G. A big secret is to begin and end your solo over a chord on one of the notes of the chord. This is one approach. Another would be to play the G major schale, and end on whatever chord note corresponds to the cord your playing on. The beauty of the penatonic approach is all those vaious penatonic scales, will have the same notes that are in the Key of G.

Amazing advice! Made solos and scales so much less intimidating but for chord changes, would you just have to learn the different boxes in the scale of the other chords and just switch to said boxes when the change comes? Or would you meet that chord change by playing the same root note as the chord and continue to solo in the same scale? Thanks again for the video!
@jingle1161

The only way to play interesting solo's (and really enjoy music) is by developing your EAR and knowing your fretboard. Find some software that generates melodies/intervals and try to play them by ear and at the same time, SING the note values out loud , no matter how bad you sound. (It will improve over time) Bad ears is like trying to paint, being colour blind. They are the real barriers, not your knowledge of scales etc.

Hey. Love your way of making aspects of soloing a bit easier to handle. Can I ask though why the graphic chord charts are upside down . ie low sixth string at the bottom when you are playing the gat facing the viewer with the sixth string at the top. I wonder.
