Back in 2005 my best friend bought me this CD and I listened to it every day for months. He killed him self in 2012 and this is the 1st time since then I’ve listened to this song. I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now.

Me and my son in the pick up truck together, jamming out to music from over a decade ago. It brought tears to my eyes with my son told me, “Dad, your music is awesome.” He likes music from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s the most. He doesn’t listen to what his friends listen to. Ten years ago I was a young school boy who had a big family and had watched many of them go to using heroin and other drugs due to other lose of family members and the cycle was endless until I one day broke down at school telling a teacher how my own brother and closest family had been using, two years later I myself became a user and lost many people to the drug then I truly understood the meaning of this song. about 6 and a half years later I am now watching this video to the song for the first time and I am clean. it's strange how life takes you places you never thought you'd be.. but somehow if we end up living a life we thought we never would we are wiser for it. . stay safe people, hang in and never lose hope.

I instantly choked up when he yelled _"I want you to help."_ with that new imaging, ngl Like, I've loved this song ever since I was a kid - and I never really knew _why_ that was, I just knew I understood it on some deeply intimate level. That it was important to me. For those of you who have seen the original video: I felt like the fish was me. A lifetime later, the reasons finally make sense. I didn't know how bad off I was back then, how monstrously I was treated by not only family, but society - it's to such an extent that even if I was to explain it, most people likely wouldn't comprehend the severity of what I'm saying. It's even hard for me to, most of the time. Not because I'm unaware of what I've been through, but because I feel as though I'm not allowed to acknowledge it or what it's done to me. And that has a lot to do with people around me and the expectations that they have about each other. It's assumed that if I look and act okay, then I have nothing to complain about. That, because it's "hard all around", that should somehow nullify that I was hurt and that I am still hurting and that healing is hard when you've been given no space to heal. _"I will not hide you through this_ _I want you to help them, please see_ _The bleeding heart perched on my shirt"_ To me, it's about the inability to help one another. Be that the person suffering and unable to help themselves or the people watching and unwilling to see that someone needs help. _"Should I? Could I?"_ Yes, you can and yes you should. The only ways in which I have ever been able to move forward from my traumas is with a hand in my hand. It takes more than yourself to get better. It's a rare thing for someone to truly save themself by themselves and, honestly, I think you lose something very innocent in yourself when you have to - something you can't replace. It's tragic and it shouldn't have to happen. We and the world are a wasteland because we let each other waste away - no well, no water, no life. Suffocating on this barren earth because no one will check if they have a drink to spare. I suppose this song has always reminded me of how often it was that I felt alone. Truly, terribly alone in this world. In my worst days, I would look out my window and wish someone would see me, would save me, or at least help me save myself - but they never came. Not back then. I went through a lot more than I ever had to because no one wanted to look at the kid crying for help until it was almost too late. Every day, I feel a little more wasted away, even now. These days, I take a great deal of solace in the people I've chosen to see, in the people I've tried to help, along the way - and watching them make it, where I didn't, is enough sometimes to keep going until the next day. But, I still remember this. This feeling, this loneliness. This song reminds me that I still wish that more people would help - because I've cared for so many crying children, and that there are still so many more tells me that there are still not enough people choosing to help.

Your comment broke me 😢 I have Lived similar experiences as you, and it's nice to know that I wasn't the only person. It's okay to accept that you went through hell in life, it's okay to take note of how it hurt and can still hurt. That makes you human honey. If your pain does not feel justified, that will place guilt on top of the pain. Your feelings do matter and they are important to me and everyone else with an open loving heart in this world. Being so utterly alone, lonesome and lost in this world... You don't have to be alone in it. I know You don't know me, but if you ever want to talk I'm here for you.

@@FordExplorerST .. Wow. I'm so sorry about your dad. 💔 I love this song even though it hurts to listen to it. Sending you love, prayers, and nothing but positive vibes. My mom's years of battling addiction caught up with her, and her health got really bad. Watching her go through 3-4 years of so much suffering, and then her passing away in 2019, was one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. She'd been sober for a few years, but so much damage had already been done. Addiction is definitely NOT worth the pain & suffering that comes along with it.

I rarely cry. I never openly express emotions. This song has brought me to tears. It's difficult for me to listen to this song. The verse "But signs were not really that scarce, obvious tears" sends me into an emotional whirlwind and the tears won't stop. I was abused and witnessed abuse for the first 18 yrs. of my life. Too many individuals knew I was being abused because they were directly abusing me or knew that other people were abusing me. No one helped me and instead ignored my abuse although they were well aware. It makes me very angry that I suffered in silence.

@PeteGonzales-lr5ft if I had any advice to give you its just stay as busy as possible. Not sure how far into your journey of unoblivion you are but for me- the beginning was toughest because all of my "friends" were those that I messed around with. The loneliness and isolation was so brutal. It took forever to realize that I needed it though. Haha. Learning how to be ok in the silence, how to withstand the onslaught and monotony of the daily grind. But yeah - staying busy. Doesn't necessarily mean work yourself to death- but it does mean maybe picking up other hobbies. I went the work myself to death route and while it alone wasn't enough- it did at least give me a new circle of friends. And that made all the difference

It really comes to show to count your blessings and realize that there's others out there that have it way worse. The stories behind the people in this music video show us (unless you're in the same boat as them) that we really don't have it that bad, and if we are going through some type of trial and hardship, it won't last forever and it will eventually come to its conclusion. These people in the video have to live with these scars (physical and emotional) either for good, or for prolonged periods of time. It really is a tearjerker, and I can say that I've shed some years typing this post. Everyone stay strong and keep persevering as you have this entire time. Always find some type of silver lining in your tribulations, even if it takes a while to find it. 😢🙏🏻🎩

It's funny how people post comments on here saying "how beautiful" the song is yet they have no idea what the song is about. So just to educate a few, here's some background info. on the song... The song is about a person battling with drug abuse (addiction). The video actually has nothing to do with the song. This isn't the original video made for this song - the original video included the lead singer's (Jesse Hasek) cousin in the video who actually battled with drug abuse himself, but it was removed from youtube. His cousin was the inspiration for the song.

Another interesting fact...The lead singer of the bands cousin ur speaking of was up and coming actor, Brad Renfro... Unfortunately he ended up dying of a heroin overdose. Heroin is a helluva drug folks. It had me by the balls for the better part of well...10 years. 😉 For real tho, addiction is a TERRIBLE DISEASE. I have seen first hand how it can tear families apart, and take the user to such a dark and desperate place, that u will pray for death. Lucky for me, I was arrested for possession, and malicious wounding. I ended up doing 18 months at Kentucky's Blackburn Correctional Complex. At the time, I thought catching a felony and getting sent to the pen was the worst thing that could have ever happened to me. But in actuality, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I kicked my smack habit, and got back into my first love, boxing. I've been clean now for almost 6 years! I still box professionally, I may not be rich, but with my fight winnings, and working days at the gym, I make enough money to live comfortably on. I also train young up and coming boxers at the same Boys Club I started at. It teaches them discipline, and helps keep them outta trouble and off the streets. And the personal satisfaction and gratification I get from helping them kids, and changing their lives for the better, is a high in its self.
@III-db2zz

Maybe the video does relate to the song. People are battling things. While it may not be the same battle and thus not the same thing they're going through, in the haze of it all people's lives are in madness and the last thing you can do to see the light amidst it all is not just "a lot of people are in pain, there's nothing they can do for themselves and I'm going to die too" but it's the fact that you can still connect through pain. Yes people are savages and there are uncountable victims who are too traumatized to know a way out, but like how people put them there, they can also know that others are dying with them and that being beaten and left to rot is one path, but caring for a person is another. Drug abuse for the most part is about self-infliction to find and accept change and taking it into your own hands and we all know how that can turn out sometimes. But through that selfishness take a good look at yourself and say "I'm a human being I deserve better." Take that "self" of who you are and that every person, regardless of any hopelessness through any trial from a lack of life, knows that too. Also, take a good look at yourself and how humanity is treated and maybe that can get you out of your hole where it's only you- and it begins with knowing that you're in a massive hole with people in agony and that hole is called planet Earth. It's about empathy. Empathy is an out of body-experience in life, where you are taken out of your shoes and feel the life of another. Sorry if this response seems long-winded this whole subject is heavy and it drags me if you know what I mean.

I recently played this song for my 5 year old son and he's absolutely crazy about it. He's either humming or singing it everyday.

I just saw 10 Years for the first time last night (October 14, 2018). They put on a great show and played this song. Jesse Hasek (the singer) hung around after the show and I got a chance to talk to him. He was cool as shit; very friendly and down to earth, no rock star attitude at all. I told him I love this song. He was very flattered to hear that. He smiled, said thank you, and shook my hand. Great experience!
