It’s only interviews or during a game he doesn’t want to show emotion because the other team can capitalize on that. You want to stay neutral. I grew up racing for 25yrs under sponsorship and you never wanted anybody to know if a certain track made you nervous. I mean I lost a lot of friends that were killed and had a serious 185g crash at 162mph into a wall and was as close to dead as you can get in 2000. I would have taken in order. 1. Kellen Winslow Sr. 2. Rob Gronkowski. 3. Tony Gonzalez. 4. Shannon Sharpe. 5. Antonio Gates. Ditka and Mackey were the pioneers of the position but the bottom line is that they have since been surpassed. I'd have Ozzie Newsome over them as well. Saying they've been surpassed doesn't mean I don't think they were good, only that 5 or 6 guys who came after them are better. I could see someone ranking them higher than I would but I really think Mackey over Gronk is a real stretch. Ditka and Mackey would still be pro bowl caliber players today I just think others at the most elite of the position have surpassed them. If we're talking about underrated tight ends, Jackie Smith did hold the tight end yards record for over a decade after his retirement so that makes sense. For other underrated tight ends. I would include Jerry Smith who was the first tight end to reach 60 touchdowns and held the tight end touchdown record for over a quarter of a century after his retirement. I'm also big believer in Charlie Sanders being underrated. He doesn't have the stats because he was a low volume tight end on bad teams but he had great hands and made some really athletic acrobatic catches. I would take Todd Christensen over Dave Casper but it's close. Casper was more athletic and made great adjustments to the ball in the air whereas Christensen was better at things like route running and getting open. Christensen's 1983 puts him over Casper by the hair of his chinny chinny chin. Gates and Witten are each other's own contemporaries with similar length careers so they are more comparable than some guys. While Witten has more yards and more 1000 yard seasons, Gates has the touchdown record and has 4 seasons of double digit touchdowns. I also think defensive coordinators would fear Gates more than Witten.
@chadog900
4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsloane9955 Records are meant to be broken and tight ends have become more prominent in the last 30 years. Stacking this list with guys from recent eras does the older guys a disservice. Not to mention those older guys played with terribly inaccurate QBs, where it was common to retire with more INTs than TDs. Gates played with Rivers, a future HOF in my opinion, his entire career. Shannon had Elway for more than half of his career. Tony caught balls from a rotating cast of nobodys. I would argue Brady has needed Gronk more to cement his legacy. You list some good legendary old school guys, but Mackie and Ditka were above those guys in the before Winslow era.
@chadog900

BTW Shannon's best numbers came when he had Ed McCaffrey, Rod Smith, and Terrell Davis commanding loads of attention. Plus, Shannon wasn't much of a blocker like the other guys, which gets overlooked because there aren't stats for that. Still a HOF indeed, but I'm fine with him not on this list. Also, his brother Sterling should be in the HOF if Terrell Davis got in, just saying.

Exactly. Of course the tacklers could avoid that 'free ride' if they remembered how to tackle. You know, hit at the waist, slide down, wrap up the legs.

@@Pedopedomaster he also played in a receiving era and with the GOAT according to many for his whole career. Just think of the Broncos SB years. They had Terrell Davis at RB who made it to the HOF. How many times do you think they were going to throw the ball? Chill out...

@@siliziwencanywa1138 sharpe played for a west coast offense that prominently featured him every game. Gronk spent more than half of the time blocking against the #1/2 edge rushers and #1 lb's in the league while sharpe blocked way less often because of Davis's phenomenal skill. Only thing that needs to chill is people downplaying his dominance just because people dont like his team.

Witten was the best blocking tight end in his era. I think he never missed a game. Elevated Tony Romo to pro bowl status. Was the most clutch tight end in his era. The fourth all-time in receptions. Was a great team player and leader. If he’s not on the list then burn the hall of fame down. It doesn’t mean anything. Oh yea eleven time pro bowler, man of the year in 2012, Bart Starr award winner in 2013, most career games by a tight end (will never be broken) and Will go down as one of the good guys in the history of the sport. The Keanu Reeves of the NFL.

I hear ya all. Sharpe, Witten, Casper, Gates all deserve to be up there. But unfortunately, there are only so many TEs that they can put up in the top 100 players of all time. I'm sure if it was 120 or 150, they would all be up there. Regardless, it's a tough choice and I can't really dispute including Mackey, Ditka, Gonzalez, and Gronk in the top 100.

It’s a robbery that Shannon Sharpe is NOT on this list. Unk was the first prototype tight end that ran like a receiver and who was split out wide on routes. He has the numbers statically, got three Super Bowls with two teams, broke a record in one game for yards with 214 receiving yards against the Chiefs. He was virtually unguardable one on one. Whoever voted for this category needs to go back and relook at this because if anyone who deserves to be on the list for greatest tight ends ever, Sharpe is that player.

IMHO some of the players left off the list operated in systems that did not emphasize or demand full-blooded blocking skills. I see Sharpe, Newsome, Novacek, Gates, etc almost as semi wide outs or bulky slots. You are not going to see that type of player go toe-to-toe with a 300 lb. lineman the way Gronk did in the video or the way Mackey would.

Did they not watch the NFL in the 90s and 2000s? Shannon is actually a top 5 TE (arguably top 3 behind Mackey and Gonzalez). The guy was a freaking beast. Back in the day, there were only 3 reasons you watched a Broncos game: Elway, Sharpe and Atwater.

No Sharpe? But can't argue with the picks. They're all great. Why only 5, is the question. As a kid I suffered as a Boston and New England Patriots fan back most years in the 1970's. But for the Daryl Stingly incident and bush league (in those days) Patriots management shennaigans, you have to wonder what Russ Francis might have achieved in a dedicated career in pursuit of excellence at tight end. That guy had it all, except the drive after watching his pal Stingly loose the use of his legs out in the middle of the field.
