I lived on Soi 38 off of Sukhumvit at the Sri Guest House in Bangkok with my Thai wife when I was stationed in Thailand with the U.S. Army StratCom/USACC in 1971 & '72 . They didn't have all of those fancy restaurants and diners when I was there like they do now ! I ate most of my meals either at the Mess Hall on the Base at Bang Pla or at my Wife's parents home in Thonburi !

I live in Bangkok since some years and there are really 2 kinds of restaurants basically everywhere in Thailand. One is the local one, they usually have no AC, you're sitting on plastic chairs. Here you can get original Thai food (from kra pao to som tam) for around 80 Baht. Outside of Bangkok it can be half of that. The other kind of restaurants are aimed at tourists and more wealthy Thais. They offer the same stuff, sometimes in addition to western dishes and the prices are doubled or tripleled compared to the first kind of restaurants. The quality of the food isn't necessarily better, the portions are often smaller. You get better plates, nicer tables and usually an AC. If you only care about the food, it doesn't make a lot of sense to go to those places. We tend to get our food delivered because it costs almost nothing to do so, so we can get very good food and eat at our comfortable home. Win win.

oh man, deana and phil, i have almost tears in my eyes. i miss bangkok, but i miss also kl, langkawi etc. malaysia. my bangkok trips were as funny and interesting as yours. well, different, so to speak, because, turn the clock 30 to 20 years back, it was much more an adventure than nowadays. last time i was in bangkok, it was 4 years ago, the charme of being a so-called-third world country, was busted. even though i think thailand overall deserves it, i miss the charme. sure, street food and anything else is awkward, as ever, but, i hope you understand me in the right way, i miss something. still, i love thailand. as you know, i travelled more than 50 countries and south east asia as well. anyway. you both are brilliant. i found it strange, when you met the two passports in erfurt, it didn't click, did it? tell me.
