For what it's worth, here's my two cents. Instead of the 12x18" I would get the 18x24x1 cutting board. Yes it is almost three times as expensive but I think the extra size is worth it. An alternative to the hockey pucks is a furniture foot made by Slipstick which also raises the board 1" off the floor. The rubber foot on these really grip surfaces well, which is quite important if you're doing things like hack squats.
@kyles8391

Thanks for the tip on the Slipstick feet, Amazon has a set of 4 for $10 so that was an easy decision. I agree with the 18x24 board instead of 12x18. I'm tall at 6'4 and find the narrower boards leave too much of the bands coming out from under the board so it's tough to generate resistance for low ground exercises such as deadlifts. My setup is a 18x30 board which gives me a slightly wider stance and 5" of band coming out of each end so you feel the resistance right away. If I want less resistance I just stand facing the long end which gives me 18" width and that's great for other lifts.

I just made my platform. I contacted a local plastics company and they made the custom size I wanted. For the feet I used car Jack rubber pucks which are a little taller than hockey pucks and have a nice groove for the screws to go in. I wanted a little more height because I wanted to use my platform on carpet. It works great, thanks for the idea

I appreciate this. I own the X3 and don't necessarily regret it, as the bar is awesome and the bands are strong and quality. It's that damn platform. The X3 platform has these edged which just scrape and cut the bands unless they're kept 100% in the center which is impossible to do. It nearly ruined two bands and cut one which they replaced. There's also not much room for the bands so they can slip and it's hard to double up on them. I only use this DIY one now. Which fixes every issue of the X3 platform. No other DIY X3 platform comes close to this idea. Thank you

Maybe @Buff Bandit could chime in for us there, does this cause micro abrasions? Check with one of those 30x scope tools? lol, everybody has raised concerns here, mostly about the finish, I've already addressed the smoothed, rounded edges but people are worried about the textured surface essentially rubbing the stretched bands and creating micro- abrasions in the band, increasing the probability of the band snapping, possibly performing an OHP, tricep- extensions, etc.?

Are the hockey pucks necessary? It seems to me that if there is a space under the board for the bands to slide, they would stretch and contract under the board with each rep. This constant rubbing might weaken the bands over time. But, if there were no hockey pucks or rubber feet under the board, and you just stood on the board on the bands, there would be no sliding or friction happening to the bands under the board. The bands would then last longer? It would then be the same as if you were standing on the bands with shoes. But the benefit of the board over shoes is that you can workout bare footed without hurting your feet. This is just food for thought. I may be off base but it's been playing on my mind. I have the board and the rubber feet but wondering if I should screw the rubber feet in or just use the board flat on the bands on the floor. Would appreciate your comment on this.
@bigbruvofenglanduk
3 жыл бұрын
Ken, you need the feet. The part of the band underneath the board will not stretch when your weight is on it. Also, without the feet the board is not going to be stable. It will rock back and forth for exercises like deadlifts 0:21 and side to side for the front squat 0:26.
@kenfuchigami
3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbruvofenglanduk thanks for the response. Makes perfect sense about the rocking and stability. I'm still trying to understand the part of the band under the board. With the rubber feet keeping the board suspended an inch in the air there never is really any weight on that part of the band pinning it to the ground. So I'm thinking the band under the board is still free to stretch around the corner edges of the board causing rubbing that can weaken the band. In any case, I'm hoping the pressure that the board edges exert on the band is enough to keep the part of the band under the board from stretching. I've decided to put the rubber feet on for the stability solution. Thanks again.

Check out my video on how to build the platform, I explain why using wood it a downright terrible idea. Long story short, wood won't be as smooth, and the worst thing for bands is a rough edge. Taking a shortcut and using wood will just trash the bands and you'll have to replace them in no time, leading to you saving nothing and probably actually spending more than if you just buy the correct board in the first place.
