Perhaps, you're right but tell me where is no crime ... I live in Central London but I travel many places around UK and trust me it is far more dangerous in some part of London than Glasgow and yes, people choice what they like or not regardless of current crime rate. Land is beauty ...

This is a lovely "blast from the past". I was given the songbook and cassette as a Christmas present in 1986, when it was first published. I still have the book but the cassette was lost when I moved house. It's lovely to be able to hear these songs again. Brings back lovely memories.

My ancestors were Armstrong’s who were border raiders in Scotland until they were outlawed and bounties put on their heads by the English. They fled to the safety of Ireland to keep their heads, some married Irish lasses and laddies, and then they immigrated from Ireland…I have found the ship documentation where David Armstrong came into the US….Scotch-Irish is a thing, and we like our whisky still!!

Aw, this version of "Long live Alba" is so beautiful too, I´ve just listened to a delicious rock version that, though too loud, was still pleasant to the ears, vibrant and powerful with the audience singing along but these sort of singing are more fit for listening for longer periods. It´s a delicious compilation of truly wonderful songs!!! I must download it, thank you ever so much and greetings from Brazil!

As a person of Scottish desent ( Mitchell , our plaid a beautiful blue with black ) I find it is a little insulting the way a lot of people lump Scotland and Ireland together . There is a wealth of difference in both cultures. Both rich and varied in history, food, and music. Both beautiful but distinctive !

Take a good look at where the Northern Gaels came from, live a Scottish life, then judge how Scotland and Ireland are seen together, from the Scotch perspective you'd look more fondly over the Irish sea, I PROMISE regardless of religion you'd be happier over that association rather than the one with England... I completely agree they are two beautiful Countries steeped in history, culture and tradition distinctively in some minor cases like it's own history, they are very much the same even down to the slang used. But Mitchell, which comes from Michel, which came from Ó Maoil Mhichíl (descending from devotee of the Saint Michael) is Irish, Unless of course it's the French version of Michael in which case Patrick you're man up there ^ is absolutely bang on. But like I'm trying to say, you would'nt be much insulted if you grew up here :L

Cynthia, have you never heard of the Celtic fringe? Of course there is a lot of differences but there are also a lot of similitude because they are all of the same origin. For instance, a gealic speaker from Donegal would have as much difficulty with a gealic speaker from Waterford as with a gallic speaker from Barra or Lewis. Just as a Somerset speaker would have with a Geordie. When I was younger I done much the same dances in Galicia and Oban as I done in Ireland. Read up Edward Bruce, King of Ireland. The English are quite different people. Their folk music and dances are also lovely but different.

can't believe "Caledonia" isn't on there. by Dougie Maclean
@gaconnochie
9 жыл бұрын
The songbook was published in 1986 and is mostly older folk songs and well known Scottish songs. At that time Caledonia had been written (about 6 years earier) but wasn't particularly well known. Mclean's own version is the one everyone knows now but the song first really made an impact in the early 1990s when Frankie Miller sang it in a beer advert then his version made it into the UK charts.

isnt " Maids when you're young" an Irish song? either way the Dubliners version is better xD love the old music especially the button box music..
@gaconnochie
9 жыл бұрын
I think it is one of those songs that could be from various places. North America and this side of the pond. There are early Irish versions but most of the really early 19thC references are apparently from Scotland and England. The Dubliners recorded lots of songs often that Luke picked up whilst in Britain in the early 60s during the folk revival (eg Tramps and Hawkers, Dirty Old Town, Shoals of Herring, even the Wild Rover) so the fact that the Dubliners recorded a song is no proof that it is Irish.
